I have no clue why we would entertain losing Tomlinson

I’m even more speechless at people’slack Of outrage. I spose it’s a sign we have been spoiled for depth in the past

But we cannot keep giving away best 22 players. I know there is talent in the wings but that talent isn’t in the 22-27 age bracket and we need players performing now

Don't think outrage is warranted just yet, no signs of him even remotely showing that he wants to leave. If he wanted to leave he would have done it by now

Someone said it in another thread or earlier in this thread. If he didn't leave back when he could barely crack the side, he's not leaving now

Agreed
Unless we get a silly offer we cant turn down. Even then he has to agree and I think the club should ask him privately and respect his wishes rather than it get messy. In a professional sport trading happens, but I still think returning loyalty to the players is good business in the long run.

Just saying you are dreaming if you think 7 & 8 are going to be offered for him.

Steele has commented last night to over 1,000 people that he is shocked Kelly stayed at GWS

We have just floated idea to his manager of 5 years as we have to a Port Adelaide defender also

Again
We are not seeking a trade so debating cost is not relevant. We resigned him this year, credit Adrian Caruso with some sense.

Thats nice. Im sure allot of people were shocked from outside the club.
But then we are used to it.

He stays then. He only re-signed a few months ago and unless there is something of massive value coming our way we wont let him go.

So, what do you think would happen if we rocked up and offered a deal to Kobe Stevens or Jack Billings?

I predict a fair number of melts and St Kilda people screaming from the top of the nearest tower about tampering and contracts and the utter impertinence of targeting a player with TWO YEARS LEFT ON HIS CONTRACT.

I get clubs offering players deals when they’re coming to the end of their contract. But Two F@#$&ing years?

Absolutely Go F#$& Yourself.

Can you please explain what you mean by comments in this post - they don't really make sense in the context of the reported offer to Tommo.

Steele has commented last night to over 1,000 people that he is shocked Kelly stayed at GWS. What's the relevance of this to Tommo? On face value though, Steele jumped ship, Josh didn't. Josh is a Kevin Sheedy medallist & AA player. Steele isn't. (No knock on Steele, that's just fact.) Not sure why Jack Steele would be surprised, and why we would care.

Just saying you are dreaming if you think 7 & 8 are going to be offered for him. I think you'll find the majority of comments here from GWS fans are that we don't want Tommo to leave, and don't see why he would from the club's perspective and from his (apart from the security of a 5 year deal). And so, if Saints want to pry him out, they'd have to pay overs. You're dreaming if you think we would just let him walk off to another club for SFA. See the McCarthy non-trade for example. And it was 7 or 8 not 7 and 8 if that was a point you were trying to make (which I don't think you were, but just in case).

We have just floated idea to his manager of 5 years. Dealt with in the previous comment - if Saints want him enough to float that kind of deal, when he has 2 years of contract left, you need to be prepared to pay overs to achieve it. Simple. I really don't get people whose club wants to pay massive contracts to players or break a contract with significant time remaining (e.g. Treloar, Lever, McCarthy, Gibbs etc) but then can't see that any trade value has to match up the personal currency being offered & circumstances.

In summary, I'd be quite happy if Tommo stays - in fact, prefer it. He's stayed before in the face of offers (and GWS wanted him despite good trade currency being offered to us), when his place in the team was less secure, so ne reason for him to bail now. Ergo, any enticement to do so would need to be overs, particularly in this year where the draftees are of overall poor quality.

Steele’s probably a bit salty at not being able to get a game. Was deadly at NEAFL level though and is missed there.

Some of Steele's comments since he arrived at Saints leave a bit to be desired. I dont think many would be missing him if he keeps this shit up.
His comments are just antagonistic. They will only serve to harden our boys resolve against the Saints, if they do anything at all. He'll argue that it is others that keep asking him about the Giants, but reckon a few of the other Sainters are thinking, Jack..just STFU about your old club and focus on your current one.

The funniest part is the guy that was in the photo with Eddie he has some resembelance to Zac but any regular footy fan would say "that aint Zac".

Some of this I didnt really like. Everything from the LC around the time he left was he a contract in front of him and was a player we wanted to keep, his version seems different.

I got no problem with the linked article. I hardly expect a player to trash his new club when interviewed.
It's consistent the club wanted him, and he wanted a club who would play him in AFL every week.

Adrian Caruso alluded to the problem in his interview on trade radio when he said. You can ask in the interview if their prepared to play NEAFL for an extended period, but you cant really know. Or words to that effect.

Even thou Wilson is going, the fact that Wilson was prepared to do the hard yards in the neafl and develop his game for a couple of years before he got a real crack at the seniors and not look for a trade then, when it would of been so easy to do is one of reason I have so much time for the guy.

And Zac like a few of our other guys still haven't headed out of Sydney since our season ended as Sydney is home to them now

I generally wish our excers well anyway, but I certainly get your point, and it's well made.

OK, so the Phoney War & early skirmishes (FA period) is about to be replaced by the main battle. I think there's 2 still open questions for GWS fans at the moment:
1. What's happening with Mummy? We haven't heard anything, so I am presuming at this stage that his medical is OK for next year. There have been rumours about us asking St Kilda about their ruckman Tom Hickey - but if we were to use Lobb as main ruck next year, I'm not sure we would need a second secondary ruck (along with big Dawson) - it would be better just to pick up a rookie IMHO. Still, not entirely resolved and we'll have to see what happens.
2. What about Tommo? Guess that's a question that may come back around in the trade period, depending on what happens. I don't really want to trade him, but would admit that if Collingwood offered pick 6 or Saints pick 7 or 8 I can see why the club might be tempted (to solve our two main wants in the draft).

From the chatter, I think that Nathan Wilson's trade is likely to be done early and simply, probably just a future second round pick from Fremantle.

Matt Kennedy's trade to Carlton might take a little longer, as the Blues lack the direct trade currency, with options being only pick 3 (too high) or pick 38 (too low). I hope we don't accept something less than his value, which we might if we haven't offered him a contract as is rumoured. I'd hope that a future second round pick is the minimum, but there might be something more (& this year) if we wait and Carlton end up offloading Gibbs to Adelaide. I think that nets them pick 16 (more likely than pick 10) and perhaps something else, in which case pick 16 would be nice for us (even if it's something like picks 16 & 38 for Kennedy & pick 25 - that values Matty at a mid second rounder, & IMHO would be win-win as it gives Carlton a second round pick, still gives us currency at pick 38 for matching Shipley or potentially someone else plus a first round pick near to where we should have been anyway). So, we might sit on our hands a bit there. Having made that statement, watch it happen early!!

Devon Smith's trade to Essendon will be the interesting one, with the Bombers having a difficult job with 3 players coming in, including the highly contentious valuation of Stringer. Again, I hope our team doesn't roll over easily on this. I certainly don't hold any ill-will towards Dev, but frankly pick 28 (as has been suggested) is way too low for him, and it will annoy me greatly if the Suns hold out and get more for the talented but certainly less valuable Saad. Hopefully Dodoro can get innovative - depending on how he plays the game with those 3 clubs and any others who could get involved to assist (e.g. Brisbane or Richmond), it's possible we could get a first round pick or early second round pick somewhere between 11 & 20.

One thing in my view is that we shouldn't accept future picks for all 3 players. Technically we can - our existing 2 second round picks would give us 2 players (hopefully before Shipley gets bid on) and we could go into deficit to match on Shipley and Powell, which would get four players with minimal draft currency. If we do indeed upgrade Dan Lloyd, we have covered our 5 player requirement. But I'd hope that the trading team is a bit more innovative than that and can manage to bring in a first rounder this year somehow. With the shallow depth of the draft, the talent spotting team will need to do a good job to work out who works best for us to both fit our needs/wants and be a long term asset to the squad.

Across the national & rookie drafts, I'm expecting us to look for 2 x small/medium forwards, 1 x inside midfielder, another balanced or outside midfielder, a small/medium defender (hopefully with speed, accurate kicking & 1-on-1 defensive skills but might have to settle for just some of those skills), another utility defender & probably a rookie ruckman. Obviously the top quality is in the top 10, but difficult for us to get into those picks, so it will be a test for the team to identify quality in those various positions with the draft picks we hold at the end of trading. If we have anything better than 3 second round picks & 2 fourth round picks they will have done well.
