Yeah, Gowers was a case of playing as half back flanker. He did not stand out at VFL level and on rookie list for probably 2 years. After 2 years you got to cut them or upgrade to primary list at time. If you were allowed a 3rd year as a rookie list guy , suspect they would have looked at him a little longer. He is only really a role player and found one for himself in last 18 months and improved his impact on games. Good luck to him but not something worth losing sleep over. There will always be guys like him that no world beaters that improve well into their 20's to finally make it with a second or third chance at AFL level with other clubs. Ed Curnow and Carazzo our own good stories in that sense. Same with a Brad Pearce in 1995 premiership year.
It happens people. Get over it.

I agree with most of what you've said but just on Cripps, the worry is he doesn't have enough senior support so opposition mids gang up on him. I very much doubt he'll change his style of play.
The worry is that if Cripps does not have much Senior support and we do not improve / head towards finals, then when Cripps is a free agent he will take the big money offer and play elsewhere.

I expect Cripps to sign for2 more years which means his contract expires at the earliest time he is a free agent.

i just shake my head at the "I said we should have taken xxx instead of xxx rubbish"

there is a story in todays h/s about how silly all list managers are for not taking Charlie earlier.

there are always going to be drafts where numerous players play better than where they were actually drafted.

some players will play better earler tgan others.

the actual key to it all us determining whether overall the 2017 draft (and associated trading) will help us be significantly better as a team.

some signs are very good (dow) some are good (lob and kennedy) and others are things that it is impossible to know (tdk, schumaker etc)

i reckon in about three years time we can start to make that call.

Exactly even after SOS for draft with us in 2015 I still don't know if we done any good or not.
Curnow is obviously brilliant, Weitering could be a star to average, McKay I'm confident will make a player but could be a bust and Cuningham and SOJ could go either way.

Well you know what, if we don't improve our on field results by 2021 then I wouldn't blame him for wanting to leave for big $ and success. The guy is trying his guts out for this club and the onus is on the club to make sure they have the right player development and gameplan going forward to bring us some on field success by then.

Everyone needs to chill.

Cripps & Doc are the leaders of the next great Carlton side and they aren't going anywhere. Stop worrying about what "might" happen and lets focus on what will happen. Cripps & No.17

I am chilled, I seriously doubt Cripps will leave.

Mind you though, people said the same about Gibbs not leaving...

Have another angry pill
Really? Are u saying he’s not inspirational and lifts those around him when he’s making 2nd, 3rd & 4th efforts.
If u want to make this personal it really shows your quality as a person.
It wasn’t an angry post, it was disputing the rubbish u and your cohorts are spouting

Firstly, if I was Patty Cripps I wouldn’t sign for longer. Test the market when I am a free agent and drive my price and number of years up.

Second, we will get a batch of quality kids in this draft and I see merit in trading down our first pick and bringing in Shiel ‘a year early’ to bolster our midfield and also the 24+ age group. If GWS gave us pick 9 back, we would have picks 9, 23 and 26 or thereabouts. There are other things SOS could do.

There is a fair chance we won’t land any of Gaff, Wallis, Dahlhaus, Sloane, etc as a free agent.

So an immediate improvement in the midfield with Shiel would give our young group Dow, Fisher, SPS, Cuningham, Polson and L’Ob some space to develop and not carry such a great load. So the midfield would have Cripps, Shiel, Murphy, Ed, Lang and Kennedy for starters, and then our young group. And I think SOS will target at least 2 more midfielders in the draft this year.

The let him wait and get him for free next year doesn’t work in my opinion. Shiel may well feel we don’t really want him, and GWS are looking to do a deal this year.

Given that GWS have and will continue to have salary cap issues with Greene agreeing to defer his salary and a whole bunch of free agents coming on line next year, I see a Shiel trade as very smart business for both clubs, and GWS gets a better outcome swapping it’s first with ours than if they lose Shiel (and other free agents) next year.

Pffft crazy talk

If I was Cripps I’d sign now for 10 years for nothing

PS I have no ability or shame

Don't worry about Shiel getting offended. That's rubbish. Everyone is worried about offending someone these days its cringe worthy stuff.

Like I said previously, Shiel would be smart to wait a year. First of all, the idea of him coming to us and losing a lot of games next year isn't appealing anyway. GWS still have a much better shot at a flag next year than we do. Meanwhile, we keep our top pick in a strong draft so when he does come to us, we'll have a stronger team which in turn, will be more appealing to him.

One more season without him won't break our future midfield group at all.

As for things working out for GWS, I don't barrack for them and I don't give a shit what works for them.

Interesting u lump yourself in as a cohort Crush.
There’s just been a lot of over top opinion of late and some people taking time to think rationally and having an open mind to different ideas, others who get fixated on an idea & won’t let go.
The -we can’t do this, or have to do that, the afl is a conspiracy, salary caps don’t count, singling out one word in a sentence and running worked it (completely out of context) is getting tiresome.
Open, thoughtful, dialogue & discussion would be nice for a change, we all have an opinion but a little respect isn’t to much to ask. U don’t have to agree, but the idea is to come back with a valid reason why

You are right. But other than 2017, how many unhindered matches does Kruez average per year? 4? 6?

I’m not debating that at all, that’s why I said he’s worth bugerall to trade out. My contention was he’s worth more to us than basically delisting, as the trade value is so small. And it was very much prefaced with - Fit and firing
