I reckon we can get Gaff + Shiel this trading season only if we can give assurances to both players they will be coming together to help Cripps and the club. We need one more though - will be delighted with Hannebery will be happy with Tyson. Levi will sure to be trade bait for a club that wants a cheap forward/ruck. Money is on Eagles as I think they really do need one for back up.
We will play finals next year if we somehow was able to snare all three of them to the football club

The hardest part of the reset for SOS is to now get the missing pieces.

I’ve banged on about helping our kids over the next few years before they get disenchanted and lost, but it’s more than that. You need class and leadership around them, not just bigger bodies who offer little.
It’s also practically impossible to become a ‘destination club’ by winning next to no games and convincing the Gaffs, Shields and Kelly’s to come.

Will be interesting to see how this unfolds but I’m not at all confident will get any top shelf FA this year.

Your correct not winning games makes it very hard to get the really good FA's. Combined with other clubs also bidding on those players its tough.

Its why I would contemplate using pick 1 for someone like a shiel. You take him out of the bidding war that will eventually happen.

2019 Best 32 squad

Docherty Weitering Plowman
Byrne Marchbank Williamson
Pickett Cripps O'Brien
Dow Charlie Fisher
Murphy McKay Dahlhaus
Kruezer Kennedy SPS
Walsh Jones Simpson Curnow Cuningham Silvagni Polson Lang Garlett Macreadie Kerr TDK Phillips LeBois

Plus Collier-Dawkins Clark Bytel Nelson BSOS Collins Miles

A fit list and improvement in the under 21's and that squad should win a minimum 6 games and probably a few more! :thumbsu:

Can't see it as a lot of younger players still need another pre season and more games. 2020 is a real possibility
Yep, If we had got a ton of games into Williamson, Byrne, Cuningham, Pickett and Macreadie this year and all with the help of Docherty we would have been further ahead in terms of cohesion going into 2019. Instead we are a further behind than ideally we expected to be before all those injuries. So 2020 might be more realistic time frame and have to be more patient as fans.

That was disappointing but we then got games into Fisher Polson Dow O'Brien Charlie Weitering McKay SPS Jack Lang Kerr Kennedy so not all bad. Just vital to have them all fit and a Strong reserves side in 2019. That will make all the difference in development and results

Most of those guys were going to play anyway with those other young guys to develop so much more cohesion. Sadly, Kennedy can be added to the injured group as really not getting much games into this season. Weitering had no real decent run at it too apart from 3 or 4 games uninjured. Polson, Dow and O'Brien certainly got a few more games but overall the injuries have lead to likes of Lamb, O'Shea, Mullett & Shaw playing way way more senior games than was ever intended. Similarly even Thomas and Wright probably saved from pushed out to VFL team because of so many injuries to guys we would have got games into from younger group.

It was a very bad one. Can't be just dismissed

Don't agree with this at all.

The incident should have absolutely no impact on whether a club is interested in Gaff, nor should it affect his value in any way.

Clubs would be mad IMO to drop their interest in him on the back of it, just as they were mad to put a line through Charlie for his incident in the week leading up to the draft.

I think it would. Would definitely be discussed. Not sure the comparison with what Charlie did and what Gaff did is a fair one

Obviously not comparing the two as incidents, nor am I defending either action.

Just using it to show that clubs are sometimes too quick to put a line through a good person for a silly mistake.

If the list management staff at any club has been put off bringing in Gaff because of what he did last weekend, they should be sacked. It should hold no relevance whatsoever.

Soaps that list IF fit will win 10 games.

Not a chance any club is going to back off from Gaff based on that incident. He is a quality player and was a one-off (albeit terrible) indiscretion.

Yep, I did not want him soon after incident but calmed down now as horrible as it was what harm he inflicted on an 18 year old. Rather another club have to wear possible baggage that comes with him wherever he goes or stays now for rest of his career. But does not change a thing he is a gun winger in the league when on field. Hope for his sake he can deal with emotional drain of what he done that can never be undone.

How can you say it should hold no relevance....that was a very serious offence not only on brayshaw but west coast finals contention...has to be considered

Am I the only supporter not keen on picking up Gaff. Is in career best form but can he maintain it throughout an extended contract? Very good player but not sure he is a game changer. I would prefer we save our bickies for Shiel J Kelly or a Whitfield type for when they come out of contract. In the meantime, I prefer we remain patient and pick up best available talent. IMO our club underestimated the extent of our list gap and another year of top end draft picks will help build the foundation of a future powerhouse, assuming we get our off-field football management stuff sorted out. Lets bring forward our 2019 draft pick and put it on the table and not get sucked into competing in an inflated player trade mark where St Kilda and North are reeking of desperation.
