I’ve got no problem with them promoting success for female students (I love that girls are now encouraged to think big and that they can do anything - a far cry from the typing pool/hairdresser/mother type options we were given ), but when boys are treated almost as second class citizens within the same school, you just know this isn’t going to end well. What’s wrong with promoting success for ALL students? And look, as a female who has had to struggle through rampant chauvinism and glass ceilings all my life, I am fully aware of how far they need to go, but you don’t achieve equality by suppressing the oppressors.
My point is Jenny, I don't think that boys are being treated as second class citizens at all. One swallow does not a summer make.

We may have a lease. but, from next year there will be no capabilities of night training, and in 2/3 years time, the Oval will be Open to the Public. Which mean we will have to train at times on different venues with lockout and light capabilities.

But the 2 most important reasons for moving before the lease expires Are,
1st important reason, the current facilities will get old and require a major rebuild in about 15/20 years, But more importantly, if the AFLW increases and the AFL get a reserves team in they will need a bigger facility to accommodate 3 teams in 5 to 6 years. all training and Playing at the same time of the season. there no way they are going to spend big money on the current facility.
2nd Important reason, Money. while they have a lease for 30 odd years, the developer would like to move in quicker, the timing of when they move may be a mini-windfall with the developer paying them to vacate there lease. The longer they are at West Lakes the less money they will be offered.

My tip is they would have planned for a move within 15 years, but the AFLW and AFL ressies would have forced a change in there planning. So I expect a change in 5/10 years. to a facility that has more than 1 oval.
If there’s anything they’re doing they don’t want anyone to see they’ll do it in the Shed.

Reading a clock is not a measure of anything. It's as arbitrary as being able to play an instrument being used a measure of education.

If you are just saying that this one teacher was crap, then that of course could be the case. In fact, the whole school could be rubbish ... OR your experience of the school could be the outlier.

I'm not here to defend the education system, I can't stand the thinking and mindset that is being encouraged in our kids / teachers / parents in the name of "education" ... but claiming that teachers in general are going to favour girls over boys because girls are "easier to teach" is a bit over the top.

I could introduce you to a few girls from a group I am working with at the moment in a Community Project that would be described as the opposite of "easy" ... but then it would be madness to extrapolate my experience to the entire population wouldn't it?
By no means am I saying it is a common thing in schools, one would think far from it. But I'm just saying I understand Jenny's situation, because I've seen similar before.

Won't argue over the clock, really pointless. But I personally don't expect someone to be able to play an instrument if I randomly ask them, but if I ask them the time... Anyway, that's by the by.

And again I really CBF arguing, but this experience happened multiple years in a row from this class, and knowing a lot of the kids and families personally, it isnt an outlier. I think the bulk of it falls on the individual teacher in this instance, and the fact that a lot of kids are getting pulled out of that school now once they reach year 5 or 6 shows that. The school has dropped in student numbers by 30% in 3 years or so.

I'm not saying the education system is sexist as a whole, it is just that I understand how hard they can be to deal with in certain situations.

Off topic question to Soccer Fans ......i'm watching Stoke City playing Everton in Snow conditions .......many bears have been killed to keep supporters warm .....there's snail trails all over the pitch .....miserable conditions

My question is: why haven't Soccer gone indoor stadiums ? .....they're smaller pitches than AFL .....there's plenty of money to have indoor stadiums ....so why not, is it simply tradition ?
Whether there's plenty of money depends on the club. If I had to guess the reason why there are fewer new indoor stadiums being built than the outdoor variety, I'd say it would be a combination of costs, tradition and practicality involving growing the turf. Regarding the last one, there are a few stadiums around the world that have solved that issue by having retractable pitches that slide under the stands and outside the stadium (e.g. University of Phoenix Stadium in the USA and Sapporo Dome in Japan). This allows the turf to get some sun but also has the added convenience of protecting the grass during other events like concerts, but again not all sporting organisations can afford new stadiums plus the added cost of something like this. That said, I suspect the future may bring advancements in artificial turf that'll allow for more indoor stadiums to be built/used.

Actually, reading a clock is used as a major specific measure as part of the test of comprehension of the elderly when assessing what sort of aged care they qualify for.

Charlie Dixon is going to have trouble if he goes into a aged care facility

I think it’s partly tradition. Playing an away game in blustery conditions at stoke is a cliche for sorting out the men from the European prima donas.

Partly that soccer needs better quality turf than football and is hard to grow in an indoor stadium
How does grass go when it’s under the snow in sub zero temperatures? I’d hazard a guess, not good.

Currently traveling through China on holiday. I’ve asked all the locals I could find if they have heard of “Aussie Rules”, “AFL”, “Port Power”, “Olive Ball” and even “Adelaide Stadium Shanghai” - not one person said they recognised any of those things. The only Port reference I could find is the picture below (taken in Xi’an).
And sorry for the shaky foto.

Those are rare events. For your typica match day, an indoor stadium won’t grow the grass as well.

Luton I think once had an indoor stadium with fake turf. It was terrible.

I will never understand people like this. How can anyone simultaneously support Norwood in the SANFL, and Port in the AFL? It's like someone choosing to support Collingwood in the VFL and Essendon in the AFL.

I don't get it either. I come from a family of mad Sturt supporters and if I supported Port Adelaide in the AFL, I'd probably be disowned.

I don't have a Pov in regards to this clock reading thing but the elderly grew up reading analogue clocks.
Kids these days barely see analogue clocks so I'd imagine something else in the future would be used as the specific measure to test comprehension.

I was surprised that the nurse in a pre-op check for my elderly mother did the clock thing. I thought it may have to do with cognitive function

I knew many non Port supporting footy followers that despised the Crows from the get go. It's no great leap that some of these would take an interest in Port when they arrived.

I thought that I read something about a concern due to lessening education outcomes for boys a couple of years ago. IIRC the article suggested that in general here'd been an increased focus on the girls in certain areas. As there were no extra resources being deployed, the extra focus had to leave a casualty of some extent.
