I don't think so... probably only once we didn't find a deal and that was with Port for Jacobs and we ended up drafting him with the pick we offered them.

I'd put that down more to Port than to you. They and Essendon seem to be continually vying to be the biggest pricks during trade week.

Utterly hypnotic.

We've most certainly made this financial offer to Gaff in the anticipation it's too big to match but if you called us on it I have no doubt we'll do our best to work something out.

Not yours to give.
We'll see about that.

True... statement was more to the point we try and keep good relationships and be fair, Port weren't in that scenario and they ended up with nothing.

We have a strategy? I'd say top of the list would be "keep Gaff or at least don't get shafted".
Hopefully it's not like our strategy:

Your strategy is more like the kid at the underage disco who comes to understand that it's essentially a numbers game so just spends the evening asking as many girls as possible if they want to get with him.

Eventually, that boy becomes a man. A man with a tiny dick. He buys an expensive car to compensate.

I prefer the darts missing the dart board analogy, but it's not too far from the truth. In saying that, every manager and his dog has linked (and leaked) North to their player during contract time this year and last.

Sure, I get that and the system does suck, but is he worth destablising your trade/list/salary strategy for this year?

Maybe, maybe not. I would guess that the Lycett situation may be the determinate factor here as he'll give you more wriggle room on the salary front, but even then, you'll need new ruck depth.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that letting Gaff walk would be the worst result for us. He would almost certainly be leaving for family/personal reasons, so even if we matched, he'd still want to go. That in turn forces North to trade for him.

On the off chance that it is mainly about money, then why couldn't North agree to trade? Reaming clubs isn't exactly great for trade relations.

I think it is mainly about money. Why else would North be the front runner?

What if he's only going because North have made him an offer he can't refuse, like $1.2m a year? We match, he says "Great, I didn't actually want to leave anyway" and we're left scrambling around trying to find room to accommodate that Godfather offer?

We sell Mutimer in one of those Libyan slave markets.

He mentioned that success, and the potential for it, would play a big part in his decision. North don't exactly scream "contender" to me, so the way I see things is that he's just taking the biggest offer to return home, not because the money is too good to refuse.

That's the punishment if they don't behave?

"You eat your vegetables or you'll be traded to North Melbourne!"
Could be worse, they could be sent to Freo or essendon* as their punishment. North's not so bad if you enjoy a more private lifestyle.

North simply can't afford to trade (with Polec, potentially Kelly next year, F/S and academy picks this year), we don't have the currency that would be deserving of him. In this case and unfortunate for future trading relations, North are looking after number one, themselves. In saying that, there can be future good will on North's part with the next few drafts (i.e. not going after each other's targets) and any near future trades (preferential deals) involving North and WCE. It's not much, but a gentleman's agreement is better than nothing than just a weak compo pick.

I don't particularly like that clubs get ripped off. Carlton were ripped off with Waite and I don't think the dogs got much for Higgins.

The compensation system is beyond rooted. North hasn't been badly affected by the compo system yet as we got 25 for a finished Daniel Wells due to contract size more than anything.

Gossage is a unit himself, maybe he has eyes on a ruck role with us.
Next he'll be reporting we're into him.

If he fires enough, one has to hit eventually.

But if they were offering the same as us, surely he'd be staying put.

MS they won't need to pay that high a price because the 1.2 ( if correct ) will stop us matching their offer.
In reality they don't have to give us "diddle squat" for Gaff if we cant match the offer.

It would only be to Norths benefit to throw some thing our way so that trade relations are not soured in the future, no bad blood so to speak.

But North are not Geelong who have a reputation of trading fairly and are honourable to their players and opposition Clubs at the trade table.

The best situation that we can hope for is that Connors and Gaff assist us with getting fair compensation, failing that we are sadly at the mercy of the AFL's flawed system that will only net us a pick after our first rounder.
As much as I cant stand Connors I will acknowledge that he did help us get better compensation from Carlton in the Judd trade that we would have otherwise gained , but also a large part of that was Judd driven as he insisted that West Coast weren't screwed over by the move.

******* SUCKS  but thats the way it may well play out.

Iif we match Gaff IMO will still want to go.

Then we talk trades with more than one club interested.

Pray we dont blink first.
