At least we shouldn't be losing Bines if he turns into a worthwhile player. Apparently, he prides himself on loyalty.
Like I’ve said before, I’m really big on loyalty, so once I start somewhere at a club, I wanna finish with that club as well..."

Nah, I've already leaked the jumper unveiling on the North board.

Could be worse, they could be sent to Freo or essendon* as their punishment. North's not so bad if you enjoy a more private lifestyle.

North simply can't afford to trade (with Polec, potentially Kelly next year, F/S and academy picks this year), we don't have the currency that would be deserving of him. In this case and unfortunate for future trading relations, North are looking after number one, themselves. In saying that, there can be future good will on North's part with the next few drafts (i.e. not going after each other's targets) and any near future trades (preferential deals) involving North and WCE. It's not much, but a gentleman's agreement is better than nothing than just a weak compo pick.

I don't particularly like that clubs get ripped off. Carlton were ripped off with Waite and I don't think the dogs got much for Higgins.

The compensation system is beyond rooted. North hasn't been badly affected by the compo system yet as we got 25 for a finished Daniel Wells due to contract size more than anything.

I'm just not sure a "gentleman's agreement" would be enough to cover the loss of Gaff. Given he'll be moving to be closer to family, rather then just for money, I think we'll match and he'll ask for a trade.

But if they were offering the same as us, surely he'd be staying put.

That would only be the case if it were purely about money - I think Gaff would mainly leave for personal reasons, as he's said in the past that success will play a large part in his decision.

If Gaff goes to north I don’t think we have any chance of turning it into a trade scenario.

We would just have to make the most of the draft pick we get.
Preuss 206 cm Ruckman tired of not getting a game for Norf , might be handy steak knives .

I don't really understand this completely.

So can we match the offer and Gaff still go "nah guys I'm still leaving it's not just for the money" but since we've matched it now goes to a trade??

Basically yes.

Matching the offer would be a tactical effort to force a trade as he is a restricted Free Agent.

Also, good news for the basketballers. After the Irish and the baseballer were busts it was the next logical step to see if basketballers are worth a go...

Mark Worthington is only like 35 now I think - would have been a chance again in 2016 but probably too late now.

If WC couldn’t afford a godfather offer I’m sure Gaff would walk even if WC did match just so we got a trade done. He’s not going to screw us over

So as far as I can see.... from the experts at BF...

Losing - Lycett to Port, Gaff to random vic club
Gaining- Kelly, SPP, English ( Who knows how)

Which makes our team next year

FB Sheppard Barrass Hurn
HB Duggan McGovern Cole
C Redden Kelly Powell-Pepper
HF Ryan Darling Waterman
FF Cripps Kennedy Rioli
R English Yeo Shuey
INT Hutchings Sheed Jetta Venables

I like it.

Sure English is too young to ruck full time but still like it

.

Hypothetical time. Let's say Gaff decides he wants to be back home. If we match an offer and retain the rights to his services, what's to stop us putting it to him that we'll get him there, but we need to get a fair trade out of it, and that this will require him to readjust what he expects to earn over there?

Let's say the 'market rate' for Gaff is about 800-900k - as in, that's about what a team would happily pay him and trade with us for, as opposed to $1.2m where they would not be wanting to give up anything in return. We match the offer and he's our player at $1.2m. We say we'll work out a deal to send you to Melbourne tomorrow if you readjust your contract back to the market rate. If he wants to go back to Melbourne then he'll agree to a renegotiation, and we trade him for something like a pick around 10 and another late first.

The way I see it the worst case scenario is it turns into a game of chicken and if we run out of time ot do the deal we may have to pay some of his salary to get a 'fair' trade out of another club. But then even in the worst case the equation becomes something like:

Option 1 (Trade):
Lose Gaff and up to 300k/year of salary cap space, gain two first rounders.

Option 2 (FA):
Lose Gaff and get one late first round compo pick.

Option 1 seems to be the more balanced deal to me. I wouldn't blame Gaff/his management if they thought it was too hardball on our part, but the reality is being a restricted FA doesn't entitle him to have his cake and eat it too. Everyone settles for a fair deal.

I'm also assuming that the AFL won't let us manipulate the FA compo as they have with other clubs, which of course would allow us to get that two first a lot easier.

How could North afford both Gaff and Polec?
We have boatloads of cap space, more than enough last year to offer both Kelly and Martin the same deal as Gaff . And Goldy is out of contract next year which will give us another 900k , it’s absurd tbh .
