The Salary cap squeeze taken up largely by Buddy's contract and Tippett will be reduced somewhat at end of 2018 when Kurt's salary is off the books for good.

Will the next trade steal by the Swans come from any of these players. I'm not aware of many of them that are out of contract and worth pursuing. Do any names stand out as trade possibilities? Wouldn't mind Foggarty however he is contracted to 2021.

I dont think we need a BIG fish per se. 2 or 3 mid to high end players would speed up our rebuild dramatically. Ed langdon and players of his ilk

I agree that a big fish is not necessary. My point is that now there is the chance to target several mid-tier players as there will be more flexibility with the salary cap. Langdon from Freo is a good nomination.

You are assuming that the AFL actually want the Suns to succeed as a fully-functioning football club, as opposed to a training and development facility for the Victorian clubs' future recruits.
Fixed that for you!

Possibly not, but there is a chance it goes for a player perhaps not worthy of the number one (in effect) pick (and there a trade and team not worthy as a recipient).

Suns have no value in keeping it and therefore would trade for the best available player. Given these type of negotiations start much earlier with player managers, a late call to give them such currency might place them in a poor position to get a player equal to the value of the selection.
Better to give them picks 11 &12 after the non finalists have chosen and an extra several hundred in the salary cap until it's decided they go back to normal. This will allow them to get good players who will go for the extra money and the chance that adding two good/very good players to all that young talent will make a difference.
One pick in isolation or a grab bag of VFL list cloggers is not enough, the AFL has to do something this year and it has to be significant not a single pick and no extra cap. You have to make it easy and attractive to get the extra mature players up there. It's a great place to live and you don't need a beanie to train in winter!

Top picks would have to stay 6 years. Top ten would have to stay 10 years

Nice in theory but would likely see the whole system challenged in court and the whole draft would fall apart.

Darcy Parish re-signs at Essendon. Don’t really know who else suits our needs that’s available. Hopefully we have a sneaky trade that we’re working on behind the scenes. Maybe Bonar from gws? Any other ideas for ball winners that we could pry away from another team?
We don't need another established bull, we can draft one and develop. We have Parker, Hewett, JPK (if we don't trade him to the GC for the no 1 pick), Heeney can do it a bit, and Rowbottom is already a solid starter in the mids. Florent can play inside more too. What we need is a ruck and good speedy users of the ball in traffic. Natural gifted players with a bit of dynamism in their play.
Wave good bye to Smith, McV, KJ and embrace the future.
Bolton and Stack - get the chequebook out.

Far from a big name player, but I could see clubs enquiring about the Dogs' Cal Porter. We drafted him in 2017, but he's spent the last 2 years developing in the VFL. Hasn't been able to break his way into the side thanks to our inside mid depth, but he's constantly racking up decent disposals numbers, huge tackle numbers, and would likely be averaging around a goal per game. Not really sure whether the Dogs will extend him any further since we have Rhylee West still to come into the side, but Cal could definitely come for a cheap salary, little to no trade cost (either a late pick or as a delisted free agent) and big upside. Probably doesn't answer your question that much, but he's definitely the type I can see the Swans taking an interest in in terms of cheaper pickups

Interesting suggestion although I haven't seen any of his games. Doesn't seem to have trouble finding the ball. What's his disposal efficiency like?

I think that's a bit of a knock on him, and part of what has kept him out of the main side. His handballing and work within packs is great, and is reasonably agile, but from what I've seen/heard of his field kicking, there is work to do. I'd rate it at about average - not great, but it's not horrible either. Used to be terrible but he's really focused on improving. One of his biggest upsides is his leadership skills. He was VC of Gippsland Power in his U18 year, got B+F for Gippsland and finished 7th in the Morrish medal. I was genuinely shocked when he slid to our Pick 74 - I fully expected him to go in the top 40 that year, but I guess his size may have been a worry (182cm, 76kg).

I'm not overly familiar with Sydney's list, how is the disposal of your other mids? With the Dogs, Hunter's kicking is abysmal while Dunkley's is average at best, with Wallis equally atrocious as Hunter. This really limits how many more shit or average kicks we can introduce into our midfield.

In terms of upside, there was a little comment a Dogs recruiter made about how Cal had won 9 B+Fs in 10 years, so was always a standout through juniors. One of his best U18 games he had 37 disposals and 4 goals.

I'd definitely rather we kept him because I think this kid has huge potential upside, but I also wouldn't blame him if he sought opportunity elsewhere, especially if it meant he could debut earlier. He's the type of kid who would cost a club next to nothing to trade him in (4th rounder at absolute best) but has massive upside. He's only 20 so has plenty of time to grow

It could be worth a punt, but being honest is he a better option that say a Ryan Clarke who we got last year? I honestly haven't seen Cal play much, especially not from when he was drafted.

Sounds like a guy the GC will offer a contract to.

Realistically, Clarke is more ready-to-go as it stands. He's more likely to play round 1 2020 than Cal, and is arguably the better player right now. Cal has a substantially higher ceiling, and would cost next to nothing to bring onto the list. Depends on whether Sydney is fine with having another player in development mode, but Cal should be ready to contribute next year at the rate he's going.

There's been a bit of talk that he's close to a debut, and he's been named an emergency a few times this year, but I worry that with Rhylee West ahead of him and still awaiting debut, it could mean Cal has spent 2 years on our list without a senior game. Clubs will likely come knocking, especially given that he will cost nothing (close to minimum wage, and maybe your Pick 59 or something like that, assuming it's not just a straight-forward delist). Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he's going to step in and blow everyone away, but just that he's a potential low cost, high upside inside midfielder (plus has shown some versatility through playing on the back and forward flanks) who has improved a lot over the last year. It'd be criminal if he's delisted this year and not picked up by another club

Can we swap you Clarke lol..I'd even pay you to do it!

No but that actually sounds like a reasonable trade, might just be an old fashioned pick swap, sort of our 3rd for your 4th + Cal, or something like that. Basically an end of draft trade. These are the types that GC should be after too. They aren't superstars, but they are solid citizens.

Honestly, these are the types of trades that interest me the most. I'd have no hard feelings for Cal if he did decide to leave. The kid has talent, but it may just be that he's at the wrong club (considering he's playing in an area we have too much depth as it is) and he could really thrive elsewhere. He seems to have great leadership, great work ethic, great attack on the ball. If he just fixed up his kicking then he'd definitely be lining up Round 1 2020 in many teams (potentially even ours). Gold Coast would be mad not to look at him, but then again they are the team who let Barlow go, and delisted Lyons, at a time where their midfield depth was almost non-existent, so who knows what they're doing up there..

Yeah as I said, it's probably the type of player we'd look at and it wouldn't cost the farm. Ideally Id want to take our first and second (St Kilda's) to the draft this year
