I'm happy to face any disagreements regarding my comment but I think we're one A grader or Elite midfielder away from competing for finals/flag.

When guys like Roo, Joey, Dal, BJ, Fisher started around their had quality leaders like Burke, Harvey, Loewe, GTrain, Hamil. Setting standards on track, guiding them before they finished. Then it was Roo, Hayes leading the pack, setting standards on and off the field. Still was Roo, Joey.

Now, who? Hanners to an extent, he set it off the field, apart from Geary, I'm yet to see someone else. I have seen glimpses from Billings, Gresh, Marshall, Steele but not consistently but maybe that's due to experience and age.

Add someone in the calibre of Congilio would be the ideal player to complement our list. I'm not comparing him to any of the greats I mentioned above, but he'd be that type that we need.
My compliments on the correct use of complement. 😊

Shiel totally different story - prima donna if there was ever one / why he picked the injectors - Cogniglio down to earth good guy , he will not go to any of the so called top clubs , coming from Swan Districts he will play for a team with a practical , sensible , realistic , rational , logical , sound , balanced approach.
And with a great atmosphere which has been built at the club this year.

Anyway A graders are there and are well on there way to be developed
Billings if he ends the season off like last week he will be a All Australian
Marshall - this kid with a dozen games under his belt has shut all the nay saya's up - he is going to be better than good
Gresham - building nicely
Battle - 20 yr kid - imagine in a couple years
Wilkie - first year and the only guy in the back line when I hear he has it I know it's getting to one of our players / plays like a captain

throw in Hannebery / even if he is average he will still be A grade
Steven is A grade
Carlisle is A grade
Ross border line , but the better we preform he will become one

Max King at 18 looks as though he is going to be a mega star

we have the team for sure
Id love to know how you can come to the above conclusion , you must know them both personally i take it

I agree with this that we are 1 elite A grade mid away from really being in the mix for top 4- except with this hugely unlikely caveat:
Both steven and hanners return to full fitness and form in 2020.

If we rolled into 2020 with a starting midfield of say cogs (or equivalent), steven, hanners, steele we'd be hard to beat.

Suddenly 2nd tier blokes like ross would look like mitch duncan superstars and our forwards would look dangerous because they aren't spending so much time and energy defending and helping out our (currently) easily beaten midfield.

Likewise the backline would appreciate not having footballs raining down on them from a leaky midfield all day.

We are certainly training our backs to perform under pressure.

I like your enthusiasm but one player isnt going to sky rocket us into flag contention. It will need significant improvement across the entire list and some current junior players to become A graders. Look at the GF teams over the past 20 years generally they had 5 or 6 All Australian players in their team. Even if we do land the likes of Coniglio it will take some time for other players to grow to those levels.
We should be urging people to watch some of the highlights from 2009/2010 to understand just how far away this list is from challenging.
That was one great team back in the day.
We are currently nowhere near that level.

Thats one of the reasons we need to win as many games as possible in the back half of the season. If we want to get anyone of quality from another club, we need to show that we are capable of playing finals and not a perennial celler dweller. It won't get us a Coniglio but it might help us snare a 20-22 aged player who is about to take that step.

Yeah perception is everything in footy, no one remembers two seasons back, North tricked a few with their surprise momentum last year. I doubt they would have traded Polek without their perceived improvement. Brown looked like the next Kennedy, their midfield looked elite etc. This year the reality looks bleaker.

Hear me out here...if we win this weekend and other results fall our way we'll be equal 7th sitting at 9th only due to percentage. Considering our laundry list of injuries that's a massive tick.
...As long as we win of course.
If I was a FA I'd be doing my homework on potential destinations lists, and ours stacks up pretty good with Gresh, Billings and Marshall. That may be enough to sway someone if equal money was offered.

Fortunately for us the teams currently challenging for flags are nowhere near the standard of the teams we were competing against in 09/10.

Yeah but we wont be competing against them in GF's in anytime in the near future. By the time we get to that level who knows who else will jump up.

That's 'fortunately' for the 2019 'us'

But it's 'unfortunately' for the 09/10 'us' :'(

Have to agree. This game is crucial for our club in terms of positioning ourselves to potential suitors. Everyone know's that we have had a shocking run with injuries, however other teams have been hit pretty hard as well. Need to make a statement this week because we do have a pretty favourable draw to close out the year.

Improvement can accelerate pretty quickly. You just need three to become elite which could be Marshall, King, Gresham, Billings, Battle etc and the next tier to step up a level. If we get Stuv back and Hanners playing close to what he was once, we are already a much better side. It means guys like Seb and Nenes can run around with no pressure on them, pressure from underneath keeps them honest eas well.

Collingwood and Richmond shows it can come really fast once things start to go right. Even Brisbane went from bottom 3 to potential finalists super fast with a couple of good trades and some good drafting.

I'd love King to get some games before the end of the year and just build some hype too.

And no injuries.
That’s the key to their rise this year.
They have a very thin list.

That definitely helps but they have drafted well considering they had that exodus of recent high drafted players all at once. They seem to have particularly good talls. Probably rely on Zorks and Neale a little too much but most sides rely on their guns.

If these whose knows sides can jump so can we. I suggest you look at the ladder in previous years to see how quickly any side including ours can improve. It can be done and we have proven that. Fact
