If Geelong seek to gain advantage due to Steven's conditon, then we refer it to mediation.

This is a very good point. I can't imagine it would either please the AFL for a club like Geelong to strong arm us with that line of reasoning. And it doesn't exactly spell out a warm welcome if this is how you're seen by the club you're coming into.

I've heard that they will ask for Ben Long as a trade if Draper insists on coming to us. Apparently, they will not match our offers to Sam that are >450K.

Food for thought. Dopers have always been keen to bring Long in to continue the family links and legacy. Would you do it? I would.

Ess get:
Long and pick 73

Stk get:
Draper and pick 32

I’d do that, upgrade one of our rookies and we can leave at the end of the fourth round this year. I’d bring in Townsend from the tigers as a rookie.

It sounds like Paddy is done, that’s a number one pick, a solid midfielder, (Koby Stevens) and one of the best backs in the game,( Robbo) all retiring from injury, surely the AFL will give us a PP after our second round pick.

Of course terrible for all the guys. All ways at the last minute training signing and doing laps to get people they missed. They will be missed.

The AFL doesn't give out priority picks like that anymore. In the last two years, Dogs have lost Clay Smith and Jack Redpath (two of our best forwards) to knees, Tom Boyd to mental health and Picken to concussion. Thats basically our entire forward line gone, but not one word of a priority pick. I wouldn't get your hopes up

Did the doggies ask for one??

They have to be requested. you only lost Picken and Tom Boyd this year so would defs have a strong case to push for one.

Who knows if they have or will in private, but there is no precedent in recent years for priority picks being granted thanks to early retirement. Even last year, Gold Coast and Carlton were given state league top ups in lieu of a priority pick, so it seems the AFL have made it clear that priority picks will not be handed out if it can be avoided

Of that list only Picken is grounds for a pp.

The others are just bad luck IMO.

We've lost Paddy, Stevens and Robbo.

I would put Jack Steven in the equation because I don't think mental health should qualify.

IMO Papley & Jones are more B-graders that would be useful but not really what we need, especially not when a top 5 pick is involved.

Long for Draper is yuck. Longy has heaps of talent but is only putting it together in brief bursts. The last thing I want to see is him becoming a consistent, goal kicking, rib shaking presence in a bloody red and black jumper. Draper? 3rd rounder

I do like your suggestion for Paddy Ryder but hes not a FA.

It's a long way out but a trade week that sees a few of the following would be delicious;

Ins

*Pick 5 & 2020 2nd rounder to GWS for Jye Caldwell, pick 16 & 2020 2nd rounder
*Pick 16 to Freo for Brad Hill
*Stephen Hill as a FA
*Stuv to Geelong for pick 18 & 54 (their 3rd rounder)
*Pick 54 to Essendon for Draper (EAD Dopers)
*GWS 2020 2nd round pick to Sydney for Zak Jones
*Something that Port want to Port for Paddy Ryder (2 years at good coin).

Outs
*Seb Ross to whatever Vic team that makes finals but falls short for their 1st rounder (mid teens)
*Newnes gone as a FA (no compo)
*Delistings/Retirements as expected.

Take pick 18 and the other mid teens pick to the draft for best midfield sliders.

In
2 x ruckmen (one experienced who can swing forward, one developing)
1 x dual inside/outside yet to be proven mid (Caldwell)
3x outside mids (Hills x 2, Jones)
2 x top 20 picks

Out
Club champion mid x 1
A few picks and pick downgrades
A few fringe best 22's
Delistings and retirements.

Ross to Carl for pick 11.

From Wikipedia
In the 2012 pre-season, the AFL, with the unanimous support of the 18 clubs, removed the provision for priority picks automatically based upon finishing results, and with the AFL commission retaining the power to award priority picks on a discretionary basis.[1]

To allow for this situation, a formula has been developed that takes into account such factors as:
  • premiership points that a club has received over a period of years (with greater weight to recent seasons),
  • a club's percentage (points for/points against x 100) over a period of years (another indication of on-field competitiveness, with greater weight to recent seasons),
  • any finals appearances that a club has made in recent seasons,
  • any premierships that a club has won in recent seasons, and
  • a club's injury rates in each relevant season.

Last time a priority pick was handed out was to Brisbane in 2016. Compare Brisbane from 2010 to 2016, to St Kilda from 2013 to 2019. Very similar results and the hit we've taken with injuries (especially if Roberton and McCartin retire) is again similar to Brisbane's situation then. We aren't guaranteed it, but our case is a lot stronger than what people think it is.

I don't disagree, and I think Saints have grounds to apply for one, I'm just saying I wouldn't get your hopes up since this isn't exactly a unique situation, and a pick was not given in the past. You may receive one if the club can argue the combination of lack of finals appearances and loss of key personnel, but it's unlikely

If we checked Ross in could we get both

Geel get:
Stuv and Ross

Stk get:
Pick 6 and a future 1st round freo.

Are we tanking and going full rebuild? Two best mids out and Hannerbury looking pretty shaky too. That would make us the worst midfield in history.

I personally think it's a long shot, and hinges a lot on those retirements. I wouldn't be surprised if Pierce and Longer potentially join them.

CTE is probably scarring the shit out of the AFL at the moment.

Makes our draft hand strong though. Just pinch mids off other teams.

We must be about 20 years behind the NFL on this issue. So many players suffering consistent concussions, then being cleared to play. There will inevitably be a massive class action later down the track, with the likes of Picken, McCartin, Brayshaw, etc. leading the way, as well as some long retired players.

World famous BMX rider Dave Mirra shot himself in the head, and became the first person to have CTE included in their cause of death. Can also look at the Chris Benoit incident. I'd hate to see anything that serious pop up from an ex player, but it wouldn't surprise me unfortunately

Drifting a bit off topic, but just on this. I think concussions are an increasing concern/occurrence due to rule changes the AFL have brought in that have sped up the game and reduced stoppages.

Ben Long is the exact type of player we should not trade. He’s already best 25 at worst & is only 21 yo. Room for growth is huge & projects to be at least best 15 on the list. Trading Long would end up being another McEvoy/Lynch (I know he requested trade) debacle. Really hope Gags & co have their shit squared away.

Won a flag 3 years ago with two of them. Makes a fair difference.

Well it depends I beleive. He seems only a small forward. If we got Draper for him it gives us our second ruck who is very highly rated and we lose a fringe small. If you think Parker, Kent and Lonie can get it done then why not.

They've also won a premiership rather than been cellar dwellers for nearly 10 years...

agree, you can't have everyone 'off the table'. Long is an ok player, might become a good player, but he's definitely not untouchable and there are other young players ahead of him in his position - lonie, parker, hind, not to mention a resting mid like steven or acres
