I trust in the leadership and unfortunately Keays did not take his chances albeit few and is damn stiff, almost feels like a bit unnecessarilly cruel.

Bastinac was recruited for maturity and wasn't able to impact in the way we would've hoped at the time in giving him a chance and whilst toiled and showed great character he obviously has not featured in our long term plans.

Walker sure is an individual and is also very stiff.

The mantle passes. Thank you very much to these players and Robbo for your contributions. You leave the club a sharper, more relentless, more professional and better positioned for your attitude and impact on our results and your teammates. Damn.

GO LIONS

Hodge, taylor, cutler out. Birchall, cey and ah chee in. All square.
Robbo, basti, walker and keays delisted. We have 7 draft picks, i assume 2 or 3 may be bundled up to match a bid. I dont think we would be looking at drafting any more than 4, would we? That may be the end of the delistings.

I do think walker has more to offer than lester depth versatility wise. I think we have lost something there. Kinda signals they think payne is ready to step up and that wooler or someone is close to a shot if theres a injury to a fwd. I was all for walker and squizzy being kept as depth, part of me still thinks we will need them, but there is obviously faith in the youth coming thru by those that know much more than me so im happy to back their call.

I guess we could still delist a cpl more later if needed. If we see someone handy available in the psd.

Does it really matter which list they are off. The way we manipulate the rookie list to move players around, open up a spot there is no real difference. As long as players out equals players in all is good isnt it?
You need 3 main list spots to take to the draft and you must draft 2, the third can be used to upgrade a rookie. It makes a difference what list they are on. If you want draft 5, you need 5 main list spots through retirements or delistings.

It's possible. 33 contracted players on senior list now. Contracts given to Christensen and Lester. Upgrade Big O and Hinge using last two draft picks (55 and 72) That leaves 3 live picks to take to the draft which would involve turning 16, 21, 34, 48, and 52 into 3 picks, moving up with 16 and 21 if possible and also with 34 and 48. Contract Skinner and Lyons as category A rookies. That would give us a full rookie list of 6 players, 3 cat A, 3 cat B. 3 picks in the draft is the lowest we've had for a long time. I wouldn't mind that as I don't want to lose any more of our players.

I don’t know, keeping Eagles over Walker... albeit Eagles on the rookie list. Emotional decision? A 29yr old over a 26year old... I love them both but Walker can play both forward and back, more proven in the 1s.... Could it be a matter of trying not to break ones heart over the other?

To be fair if we're going to say that the only valuation of a player that is valid is the one in line with an AFL clubs the discussion would get stilted here pretty quickly.
You're a very annoying person.

I can't believe they delisted Walker. He's a quality AFL defender. We could of at least kept him for another couple of years with him being 26 years old. Would of been quality depth.
I don't agree. It's Payne's time to step up and be a real player, and he will become better than Walker. Keeping Walker would have meant more roadblocks in the path of Payne.

And Eagles can play ruck and back. Both are flexible, but Walker is standing in the way of Payne at the back and Skinner in the forwards. Versatility is a great and all, but it doesn't get you a roster spot unless you're good enough at either position.

I don't think Eagles staying is linked to Walker going. If we don't have another player we're keen to select as a category B rookie (so an international player, someone who is knew to AFL or a Queensland zone player) to replace Eagles then that list spot goes to waste so you might as well keep Eagles on that basis. I think if we had to upgrade Eagles to keep him on our list we probably would have delisted him.

While it’s disappointing for players to be delisted, I don’t really buy into the “he was good depth so we should have kept him”. I would think from the list management perspective, once a player is considered “good depth” then their time is up. We need to be continuously searching for players that has the edge and will be pushing for selection every week, or better yet squeezing out an established 22 player. For the young guys this means they’re developing and pushing up. For the guys we trade in, they are expected to be pushing into best 22.
Robertson, Taylor, Cutler, Walker, Bastinac have all been in the system a long time - so while able to fill a gap when needed, they were no longer about to push out another established 22 player. The hope for CEY & Ah Chee is they’ll be squeezing out someone who was best 22 this year - much the same as McCarthy & Adams (once fit) did this year. Not every player brought in will be a success, but list management need to keep searching, rather than hanging onto players that aren’t quite making the grade in our system.

There are exceptions. Lester must bring something else that no one behind him on the list does, and Birchall is likely coming to play Hodge’s role while someone else develops to really be the backline general.

I was having a bit of a run around Kianawah Park, Tingalpa yesterday arvo ( in truth, my "run" is a kind of slow labored jog these days)

I came across Matt Eagles running in the opposite direction. Gee that boy is a unit!

Apart from that, he really was running and was obviously busting his gut doing it. He was still there in the twilight when I left about 30 minutes later.

I don't think there's any doubting the big fella's desire or commitment to the cause.

Pretty funny that every pundit is confident within their assertion of each player’s ability from a distance, but then doubts the decisions of those who work day-in dayout with these guys.

At the end of the day, you have to trust the ability of those who are in charge, and are being paid good money to do so.

I reckon your about as close as anyone will get with those moves. I said earlier this year I think our depth in the ruck may have us take a more mature player in and that would be pre-season draft. with Martin likely in his last season Big O will be there. I think there are questions over Archie and there has been comment about how well Matty Eagles went in the NEAFL late in the season when rucking. We could take a young one in the draft but I'd guess we will take a slightly older "project" player knowing its a year at least in the NEAFL playing the 2 ruck style we play in the 1sts which would also help Archie.

I can't see us taking just three picks. Noble mentioned last week the recruitment guys wanted four or five. I still think 4 is the most likely - three draftees + the Big O.

Bastinac 400k
Taylor 400k
Walker 500k
Robertson 350k
Cutler 350k
Keays 250k

Salary would no doubt have played a massive part in the delisting and trading.
Too much cash running around in the 2's. This money will be spent elsewhere ASAP eg. The BIG O

Except all were out of contract, so would have signed completely new deals which could have been at the minimum salary, or even rookie contracts. So all that cash is freed up either way.

For trade, it’s relevant only if they were offered significant salaries elsewhere. All evidence suggests that they were very low deals, certainly not 3 or 4 hundred k.

Agreed, we have too many picks to just take 3 to draft. Would have to lose more than half of them. But my post was actually saying we will take 5 picks to the draft, with 2 of them as upgrades... Big O and Hinge. Hence 3 live picks. If Hinge is not upgraded we will have at least 4 live picks I think. Anyway, enough semantics.

And the club would have a strategy around the players they are keeping and where their salaries offered in the next few years are going. I'm positive the club doesn't get to the end of the year and then decides what to do. Its one of the things not often discussed on here, its part of the management your always looking at building players up for a few years, increasing salaries then keeping the best and getting rid of other to free up money to keep you top and replacing the other with lower paid draftees. A bit like snakes and ladders where you keep the ladders and add rungs but get rid of the snakes before they bit you.

All the other clubs are making their delisting decisions now as well, are there any players that would be of value, picking them up as delisted free agents in the psd or whenever? Ive seen wylie buzza, even brandon ah chee if he doesnt take up west coasts offer, mentioned here recently.

Could we be holding off on some further delistings, examining what dfa's are out there?

This. Yes many of them were handy depth, but that depth should develop from within from the youngsters pushing for games. Many of these guys were traded into the club to be best 22 players and decent contracts before Fagan/Noble time. No surprise to see the turn over happen.
