why do you care? I disagree, thats what I choose to contribute

Because the point of a discussion forum community is that you discuss with other. It's about what the other wants, not what you want. Otherwise we'd all just being making posts that are total non-sequiturs of the ones before, saying whatever we want, expecting no response and giving no response. That's not a community, that's a soapbox.

People who want to discuss and debate. Which is the whole point of forums. I have no problem if they disliked or lol at posts if they also responded. But I also have no problem with insults.
Is it just the lol and dislikes that bother you? I do like having the like option; I try to use is sparingly but I use it to signal that I either endorse the view being proposed or liked/respected an argument even if I don't agree with the position overall. It seems better than the old way of posting "+1". I also find receiving likes useful as a poster to get a sense of whose opinions are similar to mine. I find that helpful for learning from those posters about how to better articulate my arguments in other contexts.

I don't usually bother with the dislikes/lols but I can see them as a useful way to signal that I think a poster hasn't worked hard enough to make their point. Honestly though most of those reactions just come from highly predictable sources. Pro trump = likes from WA ROO, sniko, Andrew Birch, maryjames, Xcess/ballsin, purpleeyes, yebiga, gurujane and so on
Anti trump = dislikes/lols from the above
But honestly I've never actually learned anything from any of those people's posts so I'd rather they just clicked dislike than add more crap to the thread.

not everyone needs to write forteen volumes on their every opinion. this forum has a massive number of lurkers, and people who only post sporatically

s**t like this (saying you can only post if you contribute in xxxxxx way) is the kind of stupid arrogant s**t that drives people away

They dont actually bother me. Its the fact they are used as a replacement for discussion that bothers me. Likes are good for the very reason you say they are. You are agreeing with an argument. Dislikes are fine if the poster then also provides argument of why they dislike it. But they very rarely do. They just stop posting.

How would the voting land lie without the brexit lens?

Clearly boris does not want to be running an election in post brexit chaos

He might end up running brexit in post election chaos though. Thats his gamble

Yet the most popular loser other than howard (dont even remember him) last time

Looks like folks are laying dissatisfaction with the dysfunctional parliament on his doorstep

People highly dissatisfied with capitalism, but very wary of more socialism. For mine its soap reality politics.

If you are on the left, you need to be captalist-lite. You never quite achieve your aims, but you often run it better than the tories

You know what else drives people away? Seeing a forum where people can't be bothered discussing things and would rather just give a dislike or saying 'I disagree' and nothing more. People don't want to be part of a community with that happening.

so you berating people for hitting the "like" button will attract the punters?

this place takes itself far too seriously at times. I will be ****ed if im ever going to let you tell me how to and how not to engage with a website.

As usual, you're ascribing to me an argument I'm not making.

when you're telling people they are not allowed to use the like button without XXXXX amount of posting content, yes you are telling them how to behave (something you are very fond of)
