so the team that travels the most is scheduled last in round 1. No doubt this will be followed by a 6 day break travelling to melb

predictable VFL

The thing is - and this hurts me to admit it - The Bulldogs, North and St Kilda are simply not reliable enough to put into a marquee game - you need one of the other big clubs in order to make it bigger - Carlton and Richmond will always turn up in droves for round one (Carlton had record membership in their wooden spoon year and broke it the year after); ditto Collingwood and Essendon for Anzac Day and Hawthorn/Geelong. melbourne also has the added advantage of playing games at the MCG not Marvel which will mean more people coming to the game (and a better spectacle since nothing beats footy at the G)
But the other three clubs are fairweather at best and pathetic at worst when it comes to attendances.

The other thing is where all these games are played - all three teams have home games at Marvel and that means there's nothing you can really lock in at the venue to make it a marquee set up. The lure of playing at Marvel is nowhere near as attractive as a packed MCG with 70,000+ fans.

This is why whenever the conversation comes up about relocating teams, they are three clubs that are mentioned the most as ideal candidates.

In my opinion if the North/Bulldogs Good Friday game is getting demonstrably better crowds than those two teams normally get then that's ok. Why shouldn't the teams with lower support be able to get a boost like that, as well as prime time exposure to help with sponsorship?

Also, as it's at Marvel the difference between what they might get with bigger teams in there is not much. I think we should at least pay lip service to some basic fairness.

Both these teams have produced good close encounters. The last 8 games the result has all been 25pts or under. The first Good Friday game between to two was a beauty. Fully beleive these 2 should be given the match for good.

Round 3:
Thursday: Essendon v Carlton

Round 4 (Easter):
Thursday: Brisbane v Collingwood

Monday: Geelong v Hawthorn

Round 5:

Round 6 (ANZAC):

then a few bits later on like the Shanghai game.

Anything else?

The West has reported that round 7 has the first derby, as a West Coast home game

Do Gold Coast drop the prelim in controversial fashion?
Kick a goal to take the lead with 20 seconds left only for Witts to pick Prestia out clean from the ruck. Switches to Caddy on the flank who finds Lynch short. Goal after the siren to win it :(

I knew they should've brought back Karmichael Hunt from retirement.

Wait not necessarily. They could be playing on a Saturday and then have a five day break. They did that to Geelong this year. Then Sydney. Then Brisbane. So that’s probably my what’s happening.

Yep in hindsight they’ll find that he would’ve been a much better selection in the mid-season draft than Sam Burgess :(

why the **** are carlton playing the first 3 thursday night games to start the season. THEY ARE TRASH and play an unwatchable brand of footy. Put them on sunday twighlight where they belong ffs. Boycotting those games so the AFL learns not to put terrible teams on thursday.

Hang on they aren’t. They are playing round one and three on Thursday but I think round two they will be playing on Saturday.

I doubt they will give them a 5 day break that wouldn't be fair on them. Even if they do have 2 thursday games thats bs they shouldnt even have 1

Channel 7 just announced
Rnd 22 Friday 14th August
West Coast V Richmond Optus Stadium

will be the first AFL game after the Olympics have finished

But.. but...I thought Richmond didn’t have to travel in the last 7 rounds of a season.
