2020 Consensus 22: name the team FFS

Lack of love for the big fella!

Casboults number for the second half of the year were elite in so many measurements including and most of all, intercept marks...

Looking super good at the moment, a head of last year as his weight is spot on...

Just saying...

I totally agree. Levi probably won’t be in many Best 22 lists, but I’d put good money on the suggestion that he will end up playing as many - if not more - games than Marchbank, Charlie and Harry (and probably Kreuz). His versatility was astounding to me. At the start of last year I honesty thought he was a second rate forward who could clunk a mark as well as anyone but kicked like a D grade local footballer. To think that he dominated forward AND back at times, plus played significant time in the ruck and more than held his own against first string ruckmen, still amazes me. I want him in the team, but despite all this I feel he will only play when the preferred talls are injured (or sorely out of form).
Sadly for those other guys - this will be often.

Are they?

Surely we base the consensus 22 on who people think should be in our best side, and where we think they are best utilised, rather than what will happen.

I voted for SPS in the defensive group, but that is not because I think he should be back there, but rather because I think that's where he will play. So I can absolutely understand why people aren't voting for SPS here - they think he's better utilised further up the ground.

As for your second point, I don't see that as an issue. I'd have Newman in my R1 side before at least 4 of those names, so it's not a stretch to suggest Newman is being picked before more of them.

One of first picked for me in the mids, don't need him down back with Docherty, Simmo, Newman running down there

Defenders results from 150 votes are as follows:

Weitering 148 (99%)
Jones 148 (99%)
Docherty 146 (97%)
Plowman 134 (89%)
Simpson 117 (78%)
Marchbank 111 (74%)
Petrevski-Seton 94 (63%)
Newman 91 (61%)
Williamson 37 (25%)
Casboult 6 (4%)
Cottrell, Macreadie, Newnes, Stocker 2 (1.3%)
Goddard, Kemp, Martin, B Silvagni 1 (0.7%)
McGovern, O'Brien 0 (0%)

Which means our consensus backline is something like this (don't be a **** about marginal positional changes)

FB: Marchbank, Jones, Plowman
HB: Docherty, Weitering, Simpson
INT: Petrevski-Seton
EMG: Newman

Jeremias has kindly reset the poll for me so we're now voting for forwards.

We normally play 7 back with one of our wingers dropping back as soon as possible to become a +1 in defence, which could be one of Simpson, Doc or SPS.

So I can see Simpson or SPS starting as the defensive wing and dropping back but in this exercise will just name them both as defenders.
Spot on BB we always end up using 7 defenders with one of the wings dropping back and sweeping, Setters did it late in the year and even OB4Kinobi did it at times.
The other consideration we need to take into account is the symmetry between Doc and Simmo who tend to work off each other and rotate as the loose man depending on who gets the oppositions defensive tag, this was probably our greatest defensive asset in 17 and I would be loath to break this pairing up before seeing if they can replicate that symmetry again.

So with the Defenders what would happen if SPS get's votes in the midfield would Newman come in?

I'm having a hard time deciding between Fisher and JSOS; I'm leaning towards Fisher, but he may be in the Mids as well though

JSOS will get time in the middle this year for sure. Fish has speed.

Oh the stress of selection!!

I went with JSOS for footy smarts and ability to mark and kick goals...

Couldn't pick a team with all of Harry, Charlie, McGovern, JSOS and Casboult. Harry and Charlie pick themselves so came down to two of the other three. Love JSOSs' desperation and improvement last year, he makes the team. Casboult has become one of if not the most versitle key position player in the game, just had to find room for him. Can't believe it but I have had to leave McGovern out.

SPS is already selected on the bench, he can't be two places at once!

Newman is the backline emergency. The only way he's coming in is if something horrible happens (*touch wood* please god don't let anything happen this year), like last year when Doc went down and Newman was promoted to the 22.

And we won't.

Rule #2: We will need a healthy balance of players in each part of the ground i.e. balance of talls/smalls to make a realistic starting side. You must nominate a genuine ruckman in the midfield group.

If when forwards voting finishes we're left with a clear top 7 that includes, for arguments sake, all taller types (Levi, Harry, Charlie, Mitch, Jack, De Koning & Finbar/Kennedy) then we'll have to work back and replace a few talls with smaller types.

As it stands, that doesn't appear to be an issue and the forward group looks pretty balanced (albeit with a couple of hard luck stories potentially brewing)

I voted for JSoS as a forward ... with the idea of picking Fisher as a mid, but I would love to see JSoS rotate through the mids and Fisher through the forwards all depending on matchups on the day. Nice to have options!!

Not a lot of love for Gibbons. Could surprise a few.

Our squad has definitely improved, but I honestly thought he finished off the year quite strongly as a half forward/midfielder.

Unless people have him in our midfield, I reckon he'll get more game time in the 1's than what most people are expecting.
