We don't have any areas of desperate need and have reasonable depth across the board. Accordingly we are in a position where we can just take the best available regardless of position and that is what I would advocate. There is usually a faller because of risks, positional need ahead of the pick or a number other reasons. I just sit and take the faller when they come to us and not look back.

Agree with this. When you get the list in a decent position (and it hasn't been for the best part of 15 years) you can strike gold with mid to late teen picks just by taking the players that slide or fall. Typically getting a higher talented player. If your list and development is good you will always be losing fringe players, so talented youngsters will get chances and the age profile of the list can have some healthy natural regeneration.

I feel like we need another mid, but I think that is more likely to come via a trade or FA in the next year or 2. And we still have a couple of good youngsters on our list yet to make an impact.

If Dev Robertson turns into the midfielder we hope he will, that will go a long way to filling the gap. I would love Ely Smith and/or Tom Joyce to show something next year too.

Happy to keep our two firsts.

Ford and one of the 2 top rucks form this draft would do me (unless there is a major slider), or we can trade down to a specifice player we know we will get (eg a Phillips/O'Driscoll type who is too good to pass up)....

18 and 19 to Essendon still a chance according Mitch Cleary and Riley Beveridge
Also suggesting we'd have to add something else which I think is overs. And talking about fourth rounder for Witho which seems a bit light given we will possibly have to carry some of his wage.

My thoughts exactly, on both counts.

The Cats could need a couple of those 1st round picks for Jeremy Cameron.

Geelong rolls up two of those picks, GWS would be rubbing their hands...

But 8 and 15 might be more enticing for GWS.

...and they would, except that would mean it's basically Geelong giving up their three first round picks for Cameron which they've steadfastly avoided.

I doubt this would happen but
Would Essendon give up: 6,67,76 being 1829 points, or (7,67,76 =1722 points) or (8,67,76 = 1629 points)
For Lions 18,19 being 1933 points
At worse we lose 304 points but that should not matter this year

We would then have 53,63,67,73 a total of 423 points
With academy discount that should cover a Coleman pick from 30 onwards
But everything changes if Witherden is traded for a pick this year

We would also need to delist several more players to take that many picks to the draft, depending on list sizes.

As dlanod said, can't do that anymore. You can only take the same amount of picks to the draft as you have available list spots. 3 available list spots equals only 3 draft picks.

One effect of decreasing list spots will be the decreasing "value" and desirability of late picks. Clubs needing to match high end father son or northern academy kids will now have fewer picks to use, and be keen to keep picks closer in value to their kids.

We'll find out in 2022.

I can't wait to see more of Dev next year. Only played the 1 game, but i thought he looked really good. You only need to see signs in the first game, and there was lots to like.

Wells has confirmed that two first rounders are on the table, just not the two that GWS want.

They will want their first 2 picks, cats will be offereing the 1st and 3rd. GWS need to accept. They have a player who wants to leave, keeping him there isn't good for anyone. They matched the trade, and will end up with more than what the compo was worth so mission accomplished.

For anyone that knows, how is next years draft looking compared to this one? Are the kids at the top next year better than the ones this year? Or are there 10-15 players next year that could go in the top 5 this year? I've heard it's a better draft but I'm just wondering in what way is it better, thanks

From all the discussion I’ve read, and it basically started when the U16 championships finished, and a significant portion of those kids played NAB League towards the end of last year, the top end talent look better and there’s more of them.

Predominantly mids and flankers who project to be mids.

A very strong and deep Vic Metro team, and quite a few from SA as well. Some high end Vic Country, WA and Tas kids as well.

The top SA prospect played SANFL league this year as a 17 year old. And he’s not a big bodied man child either. Very athletic and skill full midfielder. Think of a shorter Dangerfield who can actually kick.

Most of the SA draft watchers would have taken him pick 1 this year.

Some discussion has mentioned 30 odd kids as having potential first round quality talent.

So rather than trading up in this year's draft would you be for trading into next years?

Yep I think that's what I'd prefer us to do as well, although I'd like to think we wouldn't need to give up both firsts this year to get it done
