I remember early last year when some people said Rowell was a generic midfielder and Anderson was the clear number 1 pick, this take reminds me of those times.

I wasn't quite in that camp, but I did think Anderson had scope to be a better prospect in the long run.

I'm not as certain now though. Anderson doesn't get the separation from his opponent at AFL level like in the juniors, and Rowell adjusted to the speed of the game insanely quick.

I think he has significant downside risk due to his stature. I don't think he is a top 10 pick. At least not in a normal draft. Has some good attributes but he is ver similar to what we have.
Neale and Mitchell show you can be elite despite it.

what we have won’t be around forever, I want one of the key forwards before him or Holland’s but if he is left over (depending where we pick) we will have a good prospect.

we aren’t in a position to draft based on needs.

Just on Hollands
His highlights look fantastic but the concern of course is the injury
Does this put the club off?
Of all the highlights I’ve seen he and Campbell look the standouts to me but it’s only based on the vision available

More to the point does it put Adelaide, North and Swans off. Think we will come in at a point where you’d take a bloke who some say is the best talent if he is there. More challenging for the sides with the first 2 picks I reckon

Yep sometimes it pays to have a high pick but not too bloody high Judd, Selwood, king and Stephenson all number one picks if not for injury clouds over them.

Rowell had some downside risk but his work ethic and decision making etc. was far and away above anyone else. His size was not an issue for the way he played. There was no comparison between the Rowell and Phillips in the games I watched. I guess it is possible that with another year of development Phillips improves but we just don't have the opportunity to see him play this year. Even still, Anderson would have been a better fit for our side even if Rowell turns out to be the better player overall. We need a Hollands more than a Phillips.

I agree Holland’s is a better fit, I just Phillips is a fine option if we slip to 4 over these next few weeks and he is left on the board.

I'm not saying Phillips can be a league player. I'm saying that history shows you don't typically take punts on very short mids in the top 5 when much more athletically gifted talents with larger upside are available. Neither of Neale or Tom Mitchell went top 10. Short mids taken at pick 1 include Rowell, McGrath, Scully and Marc Murphy in the past 20 years. It is a small list and excluding Rowell (too early to tell), none were the best player from their draft in hindsight (I'd argue in foresight for McGrath, not that he is terrible or anything). There is a larger risk premium with shorter players (i.e. you take them later in the draft). A lot of 185 cm mids that aren't quite up to full time mid role at afl level can find homes on a HFF/HBF at afl level. Phillips would need to have shown ability to play forward this year to go at the top of the draft for mine.

Doesn’t it just depend on his upside? If we see his upside as being a solid midfield accumulator, I agree that’s not what we need. We have a few of those types already and even if a good 200 gamer, I’d rather we punt on a KPP or dynamic type.

But being small doesn’t mean that’s the ceiling. Ablett, Neale, Mitchell, Shuey, Rowell etc. A smaller midfielder can be elite but you’d like to see an elite attribute beyond just accumulation and endurance (ie. skills, smarts, stoppage craft, goalkicking, speed, leadership)

The reality is at present - after Campbell and JUH - we are looking at pick 6. He might be the best available at that pick. Hollands, McDonalf unlikely to slide that far

I think I would be happy with any of the following if our pick is 4-7. JUH, McDonald, Thilthorpe, Hollands, Phillips, Campbell and Bruhn

With JUH and Campbell both pending bids. We might only have access to one of McDonald, Thilthorpe, Hollands, Phillips and Bruhn.

Currently we have the 4th pick but might get pushed down to 7th after FA and NGA.

If I had a choice I'm hoping Hollands is available btw.

If we’re looking at midfielders Phillips reminds me of Walsh and O’Driscoll reminds me of Bailey Smith. Phillips is your guaranteed 200 gamer. O’Driscoll has larger upside and more tools. Both have the flexibility of playing across halfback.

Hollands has the highest ceiling in the draft but I’m not getting my hopes up. Think he’ll go Pick 2.

The problem with Bruhn is that like Hollands the injury history along with not really getting a chance to show his wares this year.

Someone mentioned Kemps sliding earlier and that might happen to Bruhn. Less likely to happen to Hollands because unlike them he was a potential pick 1 not top 5 also we got to see the maximum out of him last year.

And personally I think performance last year > performance this year because of covid.

If we end up with the choice Phillips vs Bruhn, we will find ourselves in the quintessential Needs vs Best Available dilemma.

With all honesty any way you cut it Phillips has to be seen as best available. Unfortunately Bruhn just never got the chance to show it.

Would hate to be in that list managers shoes....

After last nights result need something to focus on! This podcast worth a listen, started last week they will do a weekly update on potential draftees playing and any news around. This week interviewed Elijah Holland’s - very well spoken kid sounds like a ripper makes me want him ever more. Talked about how his rehab going. Working this year on putting on size and strength. Starting running next month - cloning his game on Bont! Nat Edwards is big hawks fan also.
You missed the part where Zach Merrett has been calling him more than likely getting in the kids ear too. F** him and the * cause I want him in the brown and gold

What's Bruhn's injury history like ?

I'm actually starting to warm to the idea of Granger-Barrass. A good KPD that judges the ball beautifully and take intercept marks is invaluable in the modern game. Frost/Hartley are good defenders but have flaws, Frawley is on his last legs and there are queries over Kosi. Could potentially even do a Naughton and turn him into a forward since he reads the ball so well. If we end up with Pick 5-6 and McDonald/Hollands are gone I'd be giving it serious thought.

The 2 are totally different players and Anderson is playing in one of the hardest spots on the ground in a still developing team. Just wait till he has another year or 2 in the AFL system. He's still gonna be gun and I'm still sore we didn't get his FS rights.

If we win a couple more games then don't be surprised if thats who where content in selecting. Still was us to snag Hollands though.

We need gun midfielders
Worpel was pick 45 for a reason
Mitchell is trying to come back from a horrific injury, same with O’Meara
These are our starting midfield, which is our problem
If we pick a KPP with our first .............
