Will Phillips in the Future Stars game 2019: 6 tackles in the first quarter, 9 at half time, streets ahead of any other player at HT re tackles, while leading the disposals too (if he had one more). Spent the whole time on-ball, hunting in congestion.

Vote Phillips.

Does Phillips scream Xfactor and class disposal?

I’m 50/50. Won’t be disappointed if we take him though.

This is the overriding feeling and thankfully it's a win/win for us.

I took Bruhn in a phantom draft over Phillips literally because of your first sentence. We lack that since Wingard doesn't play as many mid minutes as we'd all like.

However, this was only for a bit of fun. In real life the thought of getting a highly professional, quick accumulator who looks a future captain is just as good as nabbing the classiest looking mid by comparison. If it comes down to Phillips vs Bruhn, Hollands, Perkins etc then i'm sure we'll all have plenty to look forward to no matter who our recruiters select.

The argument against Phillips that we have similar types in Mitchell, O'Meara and Worpel is misguided too. Firstly, Phillips has pace whereas they do not, but more importantly, pick 4 is not about the next 2 years, it is about the next 10. Mitchell and O'Meara are 28/27 next year. Both are banged up. They might not have more than 3 more years of good footy in them. In 5 years time they will not be leading our midfield if they are even still a part of it. By then Phillips will be 23 and entering his prime. If our number priority is not to waste pick 4, Phillips is the safest guy in the draft. And he smacks of good character (and good judgment given his respect for Hawthorn!)

perhaps we are drafting our next potential captain..??

if we have put this much time into Phillips I would dare to say that if he went to another organisation that he would be on the future hit list for trade, similar to Jager & Impey.

we need stars, that is certain. We also need the players that can lead and be relied upon in September.
For all the speculation this season I’m going with Phillips over Hollands for this alone. I want the next Hodge, the mr September. I want the hard nosed campaigner to partner Worpell in the middle, to future proof the next prolonged premiership contention. Throw someone like Henry or Cook before Downie and it’s an A grade at the draft
There is X factor with late picks.

If we don’t get Hollands and take Phillips with 4, then I do hope we sort out an upgrade to pick 24 and take Poulter.

Im hearing you have interest in two essendon nga kids Cody Brand and Josh Eyre with your second round pick or future second to replace some old players. There's also a handful of teams like the dees, roos, port, hawks, freo and us tigers that are into cody and josh who most have second round picks before essendons pick 44.

We owe em.

apparently Richmond and Melbourne are trying to trade out of this draft into next years draft, i wonder if we are interested if its true?

If they are happy to trade for 2021 Second I'd probably pull the trigger. I really want Poulter especially if we take Phillips with 4 but don't think he lasts to our second.

Remember when assessing ‘strength of draft’ and things like that the club will be looking at specific players. So if they were to trade for pick 18 for example it won’t be a gamble because they will be doing it on draft night when they know someone they want is available.

whether it is this year or next if a kid is available that they rate they will pull the trigger, same way that I reckon we could also look to trade in to next years 2nd and 3rd rounds if we don’t have anyone available that we rate.

I worry the same about Perkins and Hollands. They are not exactly explosive beasts.

I have huge question marks over Perkins. His dispossal and decision making are not elite. And he is not a proven ball hunter.

Hollands has good range, and is left and right foot. He does have class by foot. He could be the real deal.

Phillips is very NEAT by foot. He finds targets in traffic with ease. He is very accurate over 30 meters. Probably struggles to kick over 40 meters.

I think this year is a poor draft pool. I am happy to take Phillips, then find something very special in next years draft.

If Downie isn’t bid on until after pick 30, then what about trading two of those picks in the 40s for a future second round pick?

Picks past 30 this year have little value because of Covid. Nobody knows what the kids are worth.
