it seems like we are willing to throw away pick 24 to upgrade to get McDonald, i dont know how i feel about that, because like i said, that means the picks in the 40's will be eaten by the Downie bid, then we have a couple late picks where we will only use 1 on a dud and then recruit another dud as a rookie, then have a few train with us, hopefully they're not duds, but knowing our recent history (minchington/brooksby) they will be duds too, im losing faith in the good judgement of our recruiters and list management team by the minute atm (especially since we were linked to a dud Taylor Duryea

Hi all, obviously our board is also wildly speculating on the pick swap rumour as well.

Just for what it's worth, you can't include pick 24 in any trade to us as we traded it to you last year (and the AFL has some rule about picks going directly back to a club). Might be something simple like a future second winging back.

My gut feel is we actually are not after McDonald. We ideally trade 5 and 24 for pick 2 and 30 as: (a) it’s gives us opportunity to improve our options and no other club has the assets to guarantee Holland to North and an improvement in later picks; (b) we rate Campbell as best player after JUH; and (c) we know Essendon will pay to get McDonald; and (d) we will on trade 30 and perhaps a future 2nd to Collingwood

We first bid on Campbell. If we get him at 2 then fantastic. If Sydney match, it means DGB suddenly becomes available for a later pick, and we try to trade to 2 to Essendon for 6 and 7. This would mean GCS have to choose between DGB and Phillips at 5. Then with 6 and 7, and we get the remainder of DGB/Phillips and possibly Perkins which is a fantastic haul/conversion of 4 and 24.

Hence we end up with DGB/Phillips, Perkins and Collingwood future first for 4, 24 and Future second.

Hopefully this is more than just a conspiracy theory!

One reason to prefer a pick earlier than 24 somehow would be that Downie probably wont go in the top 20, so the points to match a bid would come from late picks and possibly late picks in 2021. with lists reducing these picks have significantly lower value as actual picks.

This would need to line up with the strategy with 4 and 24 too, of course. look out for an early 2021 pick coming in in any live trading

If we can snaffle pick 2 and bid on Campbell, Swans may just decide to let him go and take DGB instead.

Campbell is one of the best kids in this draft but because he’s tied to the Swans he gets overlooked. Seriously reminds me of a young Buckley. Would love it if we moved up and secured him.

As desperate as the $wans are to fill backline needs with DGB they are seriously in need of a midfield rebuild also.
Going to be interesting to see where they go should your scenario occur.

Like I said Phillips and McDonald is line ball but there's always the risk with Logan wanting to go back to Perth. I'm taking Phillips.

Also with Will there might be a chance Rowell or Noah might wanna team up again.

I hate being negative about certain players and prospects but I would be genuinely disappointed if we took McDonald. As far as gettable talls go, I'd prefer DGB over either McDonald or Thilthorpe - if that was the aim of getting Pick 2 I'd be more accepting.

Honestly I reckon the real power move is get #2 from Norf, then on-trade and bend Essendon over for multiple picks. Judging on the reports of who we've been most regularly interviewing, it seems like there's more noise about a couple of kids in that 5-10 period over McDonald.

I'm definitely leaning more towards getting two of Essendon's top picks and turning them into Phillips/Perkins and Cox if possible.

Yeah I like him too (though I like all the options to be fair). Really seems like he'd fit in Clarko's vision. Defender who can read the play, take intercept marks and then use the ball well to setup or drive attack off half back. Between DGB, Sicily and Scrimshaw they would be cutting off everything.

Not if they don't really want Campbell it's not. To bid on a player they don't rate at pick 2 or really want when they could have selected the player they did want. I did have a baseless theory go through my mind that Hawks could open talks for pick 2 and float that they may bid in Campbell. Scare Sydney into trading up to 2 where they take Logan and have DGB slide to us instead of risking North taking Logan at 2 and the talls being off the board by 4.

It's absolutely pointless to fret over what happens between now and tomorrow night but I won't stop.

Trading to get Pick 2 is a fun thought exercise (assuming Adelaide take Thilthorpe with 1).

We will bid on Campbell with that pick. Sydney will choose to match - they've invested a considerable amount getting him to the club. So they'd be looking to trade out Pick 3 - and I think we could get it for our future selection. Hit the draft with Picks 2 & 3 and take our future key pillars (DGB/McDonald) or take the readymade midfielder in Phillips. Obviously trading our future first is a risk but if we improve (even just finishing 9th-10th) it's a big win.

Even if that doesn't happen and Sydney just match the bid we still get McDonald.

In the unlikely event Sydney don't match we take Campbell who I've heard we rate the best mid in the draft.

North are still happy because Hollands is their target and we aren't interested. I wonder what would get it done though. I thought we couldn't trade them 24 because it's their pick?

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned as yet, unless we really are all in for Logan McDonald.

Trade picks 4 and 24 to North for picks 2 and 30.....then offer picks 2 and 30 plus future pick to Bombers for picks 6 and 8 if they have their hearts set on McDonald.

We draft Archie Perkins and Zac Reid/Nic Cox plus Connor Downie.
Bombers upgrade from Zac Reid to definitely Logan McDonald and say Tanner Bruhn but trade out one of their early picks for pick 30 for the McDonald privilege.
North get their man Elijah Hollands plus the bonus of a 6 pick upgrade in second round.

Fair and reasonable for all parties?

No we'd be giving two top 5 picks + 30 for 6 and 8.
