Just to address the elephant in the room, to lose almost 40% of one on ones is pretty incredible.

It ain't pretty reading! In contrast, Jones and Weitering's numbers are seriously impressive.Just to address the elephant in the room, to lose almost 40% of one on ones is pretty incredible.

It’s a one on one stat, it’s pretty precise. A lot better then most other stats.Stats are useless without any context.

I don't know much about the stat but what is a one-on-one stat? Marking contest or on a lead or ground ball etc? It’s a one on one stat, it’s pretty precise. A lot better then most other stats.
Jones and Weiters are probably more genuine aerial one on ones being the tall timber, like to know the context of how it’s measured alsoI don't know much about the stat but what is a one-on-one stat? Marking contest or on a lead or ground ball etc?
Also doesn't tell you how the ball came in or what happened leading up to the 'one-on-one' contest (which as a Backman is a pretty important part of the play)

Just to address the elephant in the room, Jones is stiff to miss out on the AA squad of 40.Just to address the elephant in the room, to lose almost 40% of one on ones is pretty incredible.
Great graphic. I love that, they have had the most 1v1s and have the highest win rate. I presume this shows only the best defenders in the comp, because I refuse to believe that Plowman is the worst 1v1 general defender.
To lose only 8% of your 1v1s and to take many intercept marks and be generally a good kick coming out of defence is remarkable. Baffled that Jones isn't spoken about more.
I knw what you mean, but that's somewhat dismissive of what we expect from the best HBF'ers.
It's difficult to make an accurate observation watching on TV, but from I can tell, it's because we swarm forward as a midfield group and often bomb to 40 metres out in the corridor. If we don't win the contest or create a stoppage in our forward 50 (which rarely happens), the centre is wide open, and counter-attacking becomes incredibly easy (see Hawthorn or St Kilda game for example). That graph is an absolute indictment on ... something at the club
I don't know what it is .. midfield defensive run? All around pressure? Zone system?
No way our two key defenders should be having to go nearly TWICE the average 1-on-1 contests as other defensive key players!
OR .... does this mean we're better defensively due to forcing our opponents to kick to a contest?
I have no idea.
And ... Plowman ... the haters ... wait for it...![]()
And given how much we struggle with mid-forward transition, I'd take Samo's ball use way ahead of what Gibbo provides.
Samo's 15m little kicks in defence that miss targets? I'd prefer the Gibbo/Newman/Curnow 50m hack down the line most of the time
Something not right in his mind, because he can be such a good kick and seems to have time to assess the options but ends up with dinky little kicks that should be handballs. Teague needs to pull him aside and tell him he's not allowed to kick it less than 30m.

Well done to Gibbo for finally making it onto a real AFL list. What a journey.
It’s the single reason we haven’t been blown out of the water this yearThat’s an absolute indictment on the midfield group. Where’s the defensive pressure

He is one of my favourite players atm. I really like his seemingly cheeky humbleness.

I doubt very much they would cut it to 38-2 in one hit, be surprised if the senior list wasn’t at least 40 not sure on rookies but maybe 3 plus a cat B.So with projected media lists to be 38 & 2 our list signings don't add up?
We start with 46 + 3 Draftees + 3 Possible Trades or FA's.. So we would need to cut 12
The 10 signing today Plus the signing of (Listed OOC Footy Wire)
Likely - Betts,Williamson, Setterfield
Possibly - Macreadie. Phillips, Newnes & Kennedy
Only leaves possible
Kruezer (RET)
Simpson (RET)
B Silvagni (Delist)
Lang (Delist)
O'Dwyer (Delist)
Goddard (Delist)
Moore
Polson
Owies
That could only mean the club either
- Know the list cuts are not going to be that bad
- We will be inactive in the trade period
- Will not have to draft 3
- Players are going to be traded.
You State that Weitering and Jones aren’t isolated anywhere as much as Plowman, but that graph shows the opposite. Weitering and Jones are way out on their own in the number of one on ones they faced compared to rest of the league. It's more that Plowman often plays isolated near the goal square as the last defender against someone smaller and faster (Papley, Cameron, Stephenson, etc) with the ball coming in at breakneck speed. To lose 1/3rd of contests in those scenarios is actually quite good.
Weitering and Jones are elite defenders but aren't isolated anywhere near as often (except when Jones was put on an island with Dixon, which wasn't ideal). They mostly get to play to their strengths with the ball coming in high and long.
I would still lay that at the feet of being fatigued due to an inability to cover ground faster, including the forward group. When you have that extra pace along with a good endurance base, you just glide to cover position and don't lose touch as easily.I think it's also positioning and how we set up around the contest. The opposition often seems to receive the ball from the contest in more space, then they have more time to dispose of it to their advantage.
And it's not just due to our mids, I think the half forwards have to take some of the blame too. A few HBFs have cut us up.
Way more I think they offered 900k whereas our deal is 5 years at 750k.According to who?
Everything I've read has North Melbourne offering significantly more.

I find that graph worrying tbh, I hope this is shown to the coaches. How can our 2 key backs get isolated that much more than the rest of the league?
