It’s a one on one stat, it’s pretty precise. A lot better then most other stats.

I don't know much about the stat but what is a one-on-one stat? Marking contest or on a lead or ground ball etc?

Also doesn't tell you how the ball came in or what happened leading up to the 'one-on-one' contest (which as a Backman is a pretty important part of the play)

Jones and Weiters are probably more genuine aerial one on ones being the tall timber, like to know the context of how it’s measured also

Plowman gets the best small or medium forward week in and week out.

That and our midfield leaks goals out of the centre

Great graphic. I love that, they have had the most 1v1s and have the highest win rate. I presume this shows only the best defenders in the comp, because I refuse to believe that Plowman is the worst 1v1 general defender.

To lose only 8% of your 1v1s and to take many intercept marks and be generally a good kick coming out of defence is remarkable. Baffled that Jones isn't spoken about more.

It's more that Plowman often plays isolated near the goal square as the last defender against someone smaller and faster (Papley, Cameron, Stephenson, etc) with the ball coming in at breakneck speed. To lose 1/3rd of contests in those scenarios is actually quite good.

Weitering and Jones are elite defenders but aren't isolated anywhere near as often (except when Jones was put on an island with Dixon, which wasn't ideal). They mostly get to play to their strengths with the ball coming in high and long.

I knw what you mean, but that's somewhat dismissive of what we expect from the best HBF'ers.

I didnt mean to dismiss the importance of HBF ers. Just that we do have options even with the retirement of Simmo: Doc, Willow,Newman, SPS, Marchbank. Maybe even Saad!
Midfield is still where we are suffering and need reinforcement.

I don't know what it is .. midfield defensive run? All around pressure? Zone system?

No way our two key defenders should be having to go nearly TWICE the average 1-on-1 contests as other defensive key players!

I have no idea.

And ... Plowman ... the haters ... wait for it...

It's difficult to make an accurate observation watching on TV, but from I can tell, it's because we swarm forward as a midfield group and often bomb to 40 metres out in the corridor. If we don't win the contest or create a stoppage in our forward 50 (which rarely happens), the centre is wide open, and counter-attacking becomes incredibly easy (see Hawthorn or St Kilda game for example).

And given how much we struggle with mid-forward transition, I'd take Samo's ball use way ahead of what Gibbo provides.

Samo's 15m little kicks in defence that miss targets? I'd prefer the Gibbo/Newman/Curnow 50m hack down the line most of the time

Jeepers that graphic. I’m all for the claim that plowman often gets the trickiest match ups but to me that’s still being played out of position (and yes know we don’t have an all star cast to pick from). Pretty damning data

Maybe with Marchy coming in he’ll find more support, my memories of Marchy are being that intercepter who covers the ground well (And yes I know that won’t impact the one on one data, but maybe we will see his amount of 1:1s decrease)

• Know the list cuts are not going to be that bad

I find that graph worrying tbh, I hope this is shown to the coaches. How can our 2 key backs get isolated that much more than the rest of the league?

I think it's also positioning and how we set up around the contest. The opposition often seems to receive the ball from the contest in more space, then they have more time to dispose of it to their advantage.

And it's not just due to our mids, I think the half forwards have to take some of the blame too. A few HBFs have cut us up.

I would still lay that at the feet of being fatigued due to an inability to cover ground faster, including the forward group. When you have that extra pace along with a good endurance base, you just glide to cover position and don't lose touch as easily.

A lot of our better footballers struggle in this aspect, and we don't have many - or even any - role players that help with this. When Murphy, Simmo and Betts are around top 5 in your side for pace well into their 30s, you know things aren't going well in that regard.

I'd be curious to know how they have been collecting that data and what constitutes a positive result.

Jones and Weitering work beautifully together, such that each covers for the other in a contest. Weitering is tremendous at it.

You very rarely see either of them isolated. The only example I can recall is Jones vs Dixon, which was painful.

Plowman, on the other hand, has no friends to help him.
