Drawing up a squad that has at least five years left in them.
Come next year we should start planning to find eventual replacements, although we may well have some ready to go in a year or two.
It's just my current assessment and of course, things will change as we go along.

Docherty ****** Plowman
Saad Weitering Marchbank...........Clearly need a full back

De Koning Setterfield Walsh
Williams Cripps Williamson

Martin McKay Petrevski-Seton
McGovern CCurnow ******.........May require a smart crumber

Fisher Kemp ****** ******........One will be a back-up ruck/forward. The other, a mid we already have.

Possibilities for that starting 22; Philp, Dow, Honey, Cottrell & Fogarty.
Players I'm just not sure of; Cuningham, JSilvagni, O'Brien & Stocker, Would be great for one or two to really shoot up the rankings.
If we don't do much more this year, next year we'll have to be on the hunt for a; 1. KPD.....2. Ruck/Forward.....3. Goal-kicking small.....4. Quality mid.

We may be able o hit all those targets in next years trade period alone, if the mid happens to be Merrett as a FA.
Not far away from having a serious team now - Development, Continuity, Lack of Injury and a suitable game plan.

Next year trade wise:

Ben McKay. Im obviously a fan and posted numerously for him to be a long term FB for us to target.

Another interesting prospect who also has a brother on our list is Sam de Koning. Plays primarily as a defender but can pinch hit in the ruck (is 201cm) and rested forward as a junior. Wouldn't be a bad option to have a utility on the starting bench. Would be serviceable to cover injuries on the spine.

Midfielder, have to target Merrett. Need to get McKay and Cripps signed soon so the LM team know what they have to work with TPP. Hes not coming cheap and we'll most likely have to trade regardless.

Small forward i would back in either Fogarty or Fish for now. If we have McKay and Curnow firing then the extra goals will come from Martin and Sammo from the flanks if neither Fogarty or Fish shine in this role. Papley would have been nice but Im confident we can make do.

Just taking this a step further, adding the ages shows that our backline will need more run and shut down players developing, although some of the younger players we have may fill this need, and it shouldn't be a difficult area to address through other avenues.

Given it generally takes 5 years for KPPs to come on, I'd certainly like to see another young KPD, KPF and ruck drafted and developing this year and next. Midfield less a priority through the draft.

Hopefully we take a couple of talls and get lucky. We've not had great success with talls outside of the first 2 rounds.

Full season, Kemp will play at least 16 games
Although I hope he absolutely carves it up and gives the selectors no choice (like Walsh did), I think we are finally in a position where it will be great to see him develop and build confidence for 6-8 games in the two’s. No more gifted games, we are making all of our talented youth earn it and this will build a strong culture plus the fight for a game will make each player respect what it means to pull on the navy guernsey.

Kemp will stroll past Kennedy/Dow/SPS/Cuningham and Murphy - he is the easiest no brainer new addition to the starting 22.
I'm what role though - he'd be behind Marchbank and Newman for a place in the backline at least, who themselves will struggle to find opportunity.

We've favoured mature bodies for inside roles, and someone like Newnes is well ahead of him.

Up forward if that's his go perhaps. With Charlie's injury, and should Levi/McGovern continue to have form issues, you'd hope there are spots up for grabs. Again though he'd be doing well to be ahead of Jack.

I’d love to see Cunners take another step forward in endurance in the off season.

Then happy to back Arrow’s call to have him tag in midfield. Anyhting to have him in there and learning.
Improving his endurance would make an enormous difference, all through his career every year he has frustratingly suffered many repeating longish injury lay-offs, so can he finally get his body to stand up..
He has the tools, personally what i have noticed when his on ball he plays on instinct he reads the ball really well clean hands and uses his pace and evasiveness well, mentally he definitely needs too push himself but he is a wasted talent by not at least allowing him greater midfield time..
Tagging or a particular match up on similar attributed players to himself could be wonderful for enhancing his concentration and accountability, it may help improve his all round game, always ways of teaching and improving players...

Ahead of who? Doc, Saad locks. SPS and Williamson will play somewhere. Marchbank and Newman offer more for a team looking to make finals. Don't see it short of injuries.

Will start ahead of Marchbank and SPS off HB

Kemp Jones Saad

Walsh Cripps Newnes
TDK Williams Setterfield

Martin Levi SPS
Fisher McKay, Fogarty

Gibbons Murphy Willo Newman

The Rest: Betts, Jack, LOB Dow Cuners, Marchbank, Gov, Honey, Ramsay, Philp, Stocker, Cottrell, Kennedy, Pittonet

Injured: Charlie

I agree. It's hard (impossible) to map things over a five year period, but most of the elements are now in place, given the age profile.
It's a great launching pad we've built and by the time we hit 2025, we'll likely have at least 10 changes to what we may project now, as being our best 22.

Our balance isn't perfectt and it never will be, but taking into account, age, talent, profile, position..........it's not too bad, at all.
The point of what I put forward is that we can truly now add immediate quality ahead of 'fingers-crossed' draftees. We're in a good position.

Fact?.....or fiction?

Bet you 100 that if it's down to one, that Fogarty goes first.
And now we head over to Nathan Brown at Sportsbet for all the odds...

please gamble responsibly.

😉

I wish I shared your optimism for Fogarty as a small forward. Just don't see it. There has got to be more to the role than just the ability to apply forward pressure.

On another note, after having had some time to reflect on our trading, think Jayden Stephenson would have fitted in well as a hf with his pace. Would have preferred we had taken his salary dump and traded out a second rounder and a future third.

Not questioning Fogarty

But Gibbons will start round 1 if fit, so will take that bet

Good. Let's be clear now.
No injury intervention...just purely one vs the other. We're on. :)

Happy to do the same with Newnes & Newman, but let me put up the opponent first.
It really doesn't matter for our games though.....much sooner the win than the money

Saad and Williams coming in change the dynamics of what is possible between the arcs.... all of a sudden we have leg speed on either side of HBF as well as leg speed in Williams between the arcs - my guess is Cripps will able to do more dishing out to Williams/Walsh on the burst or Williams Martin or Williams / Dow on the burst...the in and under type will become much more useful with some outside run as recievers ...

with that said, a premium will be placed on kicking ability - from the little I've seen of Kemp he adds a tall big body who can actually kick and run - depending on fitness levels he starts with I can see him in the midfield mix - because he can kick and also rotate through forward. Then we also have (hopefully) a ready Stocker to add to mix - who can kick off both sides with penetration and adds some mongrel in tackling...

I dont see Setterfield as having locked in a starting on ball role if we are ( and we will ) play both Ed and Murph as midfielders - Teague is going to want to cover for their kicking weaknesses with alternatives if he wants to improve i50 entries next year and Stterfield is not the best field kick going around anyway...

We shouldn't be wasting McGovern/Harry/Charlie by having weak entries bombed in on to waiting double up defenders...and we should be able to spread any defensive structure with the running power of Cuningham/Fisher/Martin in forward lines...

I think 2020 will see the introduction of corridor football for Carlton - when this was played last year we were pretty much unstoppable eg Geelong game. I also think Carlton will play a very fast brand of football.

Probably a long winded way of saying that blokes who can either cover ground with leg speed or make ground with accurate long kicking will feature more...I see Kemp as one of the classy types who will play ssooner rather than later - fitness allowing - wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't start as a forward if Charlie is not ready.

I agree we are well covered in defensive structure - we need to fit Marchbank in if he is ready - and I see Williamson as a wing option going forward he too can kick.
