List Mgmt. 2020 List Management

I think if you're going to talk about ages at seasons end then it should be as of October 31 as that is when contracts end and players are generally either moved on or retained by then.

If we were to retain all our current players we would have 12 players aged 28 or older heading into the 2021 season with 3 of them being 32 and as much as we would like the guys to go on forever I'm hoping that we will be taking the opportunity as 2020 unfolds to be blooding the younger kids we're looking at as the long term replacements, but it must be done on the proviso that their form warrants being selected, as that is what will keep us bringing through quality players.

Adding to that, with the younger kids I think we've shown that it doesn't necessarily mean much if you're picked in the first round or as a rookie, you will get your chance in the side if you earn it and you will keep it if you continue to perform even at the expense of higher rated players.

Sorry Tiges, I wasn't sure where to post this.

It's being reported that Carlton has appointed Nick Austin as our new list manager.

He's coming from the dogs, but he's been there less than two years after six at Richmond as "list management and recruiting officer'.

Any thoughts on his time at Punt Rd? Any stories of him picking hidden gems (or duds) or anything else useful? Was he involved in salary cap management, clever pickups like Prestia, Nankervis etc?

There is one thing in his favour, he couldn't be any worse than SOS in picking hidden gems.

TBH I don't know anything about Austin, maybe he was a scout for us?

Never even heard of the guy. Are you sure he was with us?

In all honesty didnt even realise he had worked at Richmond with the main guys being

Matt Clarke
Francis Jackson (who has taken a step back and more consulting now)
Blair Hartley
Dan Richardson (now at Essendon)

;) I think Nick Austin used to do the coffee run at Richmond ferrisb

I'm another one who had no idea he ever worked for us until the media mentioned it today.

🤯

It was his assessment of talent that saw us picking Lennon over Cripps.

Haha, not sure if serious.

Picking Lennon over Cripps sure does provide us plenty of laughs on the Carlton board. Jokes aside though, I don't think the Tigers are to blame over it (and not just saying that to possibly absolve Austin). Cripps was supposed to be a 2nd round pick. Selecting him at pick #13 was either pure genius or dumb luck (or both).

Generally speaking, I think you can blame a recruiter for picking a dud, but not for missing a gun. Ie when Freo chose Fyfe @ 20, they were clever, but it doesn't mean every other recruiter was stupid.

Thanks for all the replies, Tiges.

The response has been underwhelming, although not blaming you. It seems Austin was a worker bee in the Richmond recruitment team, not a major cog. Hence a lot of 'Austin? Who dat?'

I decided to highlight TG's post, because the four names he/she listed are the ones that I knew of. I also can't say I remember Austin's name at the Tiges.

Oh well, for Carlton's sake I hope he has what it takes to be the big dog. For your sakes, hopefully he continues to get the coffee orders right ;)

If we got Cripps we wouldn't have got Lynch which means the Pies more than likely be reigning premiers.
Swings and Roundabouts.

I think if you got Cripps, you wouldn't have got Prestia.

So maybe you would still get Lynch. No real way of knowing.

But yes, I will settle for pretty much any scenario where Collingwood does not win the flag...*gulp*.....even a Richmond flag is better (just)

I agree. The thought of Eddie gloating causes me heart problems. The loss they had in 2018 was so sweet.

Maybe I'm just a nasty person. But long live the Colliwobbles.

Hating Collingwood doesn't make you a nasty person.

In fact, I would be worried if you didn't

:p

Given this is supposed to be a Richmond list management thread, I'll bow out before I overstay my welcome. Thanks for the discussion peeps.

If we give up on Rance coming back before the start of the season, would we be able to re-structure Dusty/Lynch contracts which are heavily backended? If the money's wasted this year surely it would make sense to take some of the sting out of the squeeze that'll kick in when their contracts heat up
