Ollie Wines should be our port of call if we need a blue collar mid.
Didn't think of him, was just looking through the out of contract players list.

I wouldn't prefer him but he'd be handy despite being an accumulator. Someone who we know will have no trouble getting the footy if Cripps is having a down game.

At the moment if Cripps is down we rely on Setterfield who is still inconsistent and Ed Curnow who will be retired soon.

We have enough blokes who can have cameos in the midfield - Fisher, Martin, Cuningham, Gibbons.

Need a full-timer imo. Walsh will take the next step next year but someone along side him also.
I imagine we decided to chase Papley after the game he played against us in Melbourne in 2019. We have a tendency to chase players who play well against us. Either played the entire or most of the game on the wing that day on O'Brien, which is why I think maybe we targeted him as much to play on a wing as to play as a small forward.

They do .... Rohan ... Stringer.... Stephenson .... Darling .....
So two of the fastest mid sized players in the comp, one of the top contested marking key forwards in the comp and literally the player who currently holds the records on the power testing from the draft since it was brought in with Stringer.

I'd love to know how you think one player is meant to be able to cover all these types of players and show absolute consistency? Plowman loses some crucial one of ones but he's asked to cover an array of the most dangerous players in the comp with an inconsistent midfield. If our midfield was applying better pressure maybe Jaidyn Stephenson and the likes wouldnt be getting clear runs for marks on the lead.

If he cannot play on talls / mids or smalls where does he play?

Should never kick in .... loses his opponent in the contest both air & ground and his biggest fault ... allows his opponent to get goal side ...

Mate he has had more than enough ample opportunities at the Blues (in my opinon)

If he hasn't made it by now, he never will (as a top line player) at our club.

Both parties need a fresh start.

Then how do you feel about players who are up to 2 years older than him and haven't played as many games?

We have a few of them.

Everyone is/should be accountable for their actions.
If Marc Murphy is given another contract for next season it is a direct reflection on our football department management group.
It could only say that they as a group sanction double standards in the team.
There is no dancing around this situation.
The football department management group will be judged by their actions.

My personal view is to forget Papley and focus all our efforts in adding to our thin midfield (thin on talent and depth).
For all the shit that gets hung on the Saints, adding Hill and Jones has improved them no end.

So many turnovers by foot...

Seems like its stapled into our game now, been seeing this for years.

Was looking forward to seeing Dow, all he showed me was a lack of intensity and was really uninspiring. I know there were others that didn't have a great showing today either, but you'd expect a #3 draft pick show something more than that by now. He needs to step up in the remaining games.

Our best forward today is about to retire. But the delivery was dreadful after half time. It's almost as if they're colourblind. Just blindly kicking in to 50 in hope is a tactic that has failed us time and time again over the last few years and we're seeing it once again. Then when we do hit a target, he tries to pass it off and makes a meal of it.

The worrying thing is the lack of resolve. Too many times we let teams just walk all over us for extended periods - Hawks, Wiggles, Saints, Pies. They go on a scoring flurry and our lack of pace and quality midfield is exposed big time. Feels like every bounce/spillage goes their way... because they position themselves a lot better.

I like this.

Question is, who...or I suppose more generally, what type?

Peter Wright has fallen out of the
Countless options that would improve us

Another FA, Viney

OOC, Hewett, Lonie, Parfitt, Narkle, Spargo, Aarts, Ryan, etc

Parker a year out from being a FA, same as Billings

We don't need all of them, but a couple would do nicely

Shake the tree, see what falls out
Viney is average, small, poor runner, average skills, aren’t we saying our midfield is too one paced.

Paddy Dow is as much chance of being at Carlton next year as Donald Trump has of being re-elected as US President..

Im not sure that makes much sense EJ, I hate the orange man, but he has a super strong chance of retaining office, so are you saying Dow has about a 70% chance of still being at Carlton?

Time to get a little creative in the off season.
Theres gunna be plenty of clubs disappointed in their end of season result. Lets see what need and target blokes. Ask the question. Dont rule anybody out. Ask the question of what it will take..you never know.
Personally ive been saying for a long time we are a 4 c midfield going up against 6 and v8 mids. We are genuinely not deep enough yet and we lack composure.
We should be looking to add here with guys who can get it and use. Who i dunno yet as i havent gone through all the lists. And if we want to get better we may have 2 make some tuff decisions.

The amount of Plowman bashing in here is a laugh. Do people expect us to win games 61-0 every week? Sounds like Plowman is the lone provider of opposition scores and if we just replaced him with Brad Shepherd not a single proven goal kicker we will ever score against us ever again.

How about we focus on our mids lack of spread and poor disposal by foot rather than blaming entire games on one player

It'll be interesting to see what happens with list size over the off season, sounds like it will be reduced. Some big calls will need to be made by Nick Austin and his team. I think the hard call has to be made on Simmo and Murph, with probably most of us expecting Eddie to retire at seasons end. Kreuz probably gets another 12 months if his body is right to aid development of TDK.

Simmo's been pretty good this year, but unfortunately an area of the ground we have the most depth. We've got Polson, Newman, SPS, Stocker and who knows where Marchbank fits in, all capable of playing there. Simmo playing on impedes the development of one of those players, you want your back 6-7 locked in when you're having a tilt at being a contender.

Murph is still providing a lot as an attacking mid, but as has his knock for a long time, he's just not good enough defensively. If we want to be serious next year we need to develop one of Dow, Cunners or Kennedy as full time mids. Dow and Cunners have the pace that our midfield desperately needs.

How did Plowman get 3 x 500k contract extension. Who’s our list manager?

Funny how you seem to know the wages for Russel, Lloyd and now Plowman, you must be close to all of them to be told how much money they make. Potting the coaches again, singling out the LM as if he has personally wronged you by taking on the Blues job.

You love to under quote figures that suit your agenda and then overstate them the same way, but when it’s brought up that the last LM signed Charlie to $800,000 (which has been reported across multiple news sites) you seem to claim BS and it’s all bonuses.

We all know your game, everything SOS touched was gold and perfect and now everyone here are best mates, a boys club and the new LM is crap.

We need to add 2-3 good midfielders ASAP. We have Cripps, Walsh & Setterfield and that’s about it.
Zac Williams as a RFA would be huge.

Dangle this years and next 1st round picks to any good mids wanting out.

I’d take a punt on Polec if he came cheap. He can be a liability defensively but can do 3 things well which we lack big time; can find it, has speed and a beautiful kick inside 50.

Need at least 2 of Dow, Stocker & O”Brien to come on big time next year.

Is montagna dumb? He is asking the question about why we are not a young side and we have 5 players over 30 and a few 27 year olds.🙄
He is dumb -- but it is disturbing that we have played an aged side all year and it is Groundhog Day -- when our leaders need to stand up they shank shirk and hack kick .. I am aware growth was going to come from setterfield Fischer sps weitering etc -- but I think they have stepped up -- it is when they slow our game turns for the worse as our older players can't carry them and to often there disposal is tripe -- taking The right 26-29 yo Accross midfield Hb to clear out our 30 year olds want hurt us -- we need some decent 150-200 gamers .. Of list sizes get cut there might be opportunities for us to take players as club struggle to keep there youth --

It’s already happened, weeks ago.
