Hawthorn are slower and older. They setup better and smashed us in the clearances by winning first use and releasing to the outside. Our defensive mindset fell away dramatically when we couldn’t win the inside ball, which extenuated the problem.
Stats say we won clearances overall, down slightly in centre clearances.

I'd consider Cam Polson coming in as a small defender against the Eagles. Maybe play on Jarrod Cameron. He has pace and I'm curious as to whether he can have one last shot in this new position.

Exactly.
SPS has to move up the ground so Polson tried in backline is perfect timing after the bye. If not him, then Cottrell or Honey have to be tried in back half to give us more speed and drive there. But Polson tried first seems the way to go. If he fails, least we know we tried him up forward and back and not worked and know a list decision to make if it does not work out. I have a feeling it is better than 50-50 it might work out for him.

So our recruiting has neglected this?

Somewhat, yes

LOB has speed and can hit targets, needs to play more games. Ramsay, Fish too, but both need more strength. Honey has both in spades, but can be inconsistent, needs to balance more before releasing.

Dow and Philp have burst, but wouldn't say either are elite by foot, more inside types

Stocker has it, but needs to work through some things

At this stage they all lack experience and maturity

It’s a worry, our current midfield of Cripps, Walsh, Murphy, Kennedy, Ed, Setters are all average I50 kicks.

Not concerned with Kennedy and especially Setters

Cripps should be looking at more outlets, as should Ed, they are extractors

Walsh will get better, but will never be elite by foot and will eventually play more inside. Sam needs to understand his limitations

Murphy continues to regress, either needs to play as a permanent forward until he retires or be replaced

It's why I want to see the likes of Martin, Cuners around the pill and others I mentioned earlier to come into the side

This reads like an intern had a look over this thread rather than used their brain.
It does, but I would have a red hot go at Josh Kelly in a heat beat. Look at how Neale has essentially transformed the Brisbane of 2018, the almost team to contenders, the addition of Cameron is the icing (it's the Blues in 2020). Going forward I think that the return of Charlie Curnow and the unveiling of Brodie Kemp and his big frame with the addition of a Josh Kelly, not Paperly, and we are officially OFF. From the list in the article next for me would be Petruccelle or Perryman.

I have a question for everyone. Marchbank now I know he is primarily a 3rd tall however can he be groomed into a key back? At GWS and at times for us he has played this role for us and played well.

I think in order for us to be best placed going forward he needs to play KPD. When Jones goes Weiters will take the big KPF and Marchy the 2nd KPF

These players are all 194cm and below and play KPD, Marchy is 193cm.

Trent Mackenzie (port)
Marcus Adams (bris)
Alex Rance (rich)
Michael Hurley (ess)
James Frawley, Sam Frost (haw)
Steven May, Tom McDonald (mel)

Jones decision making and disposal is becoming a real worry.
Just don’t know with Marchbank as we unfortunately cannot rely on his availability.
We really need to fast track the development of B.Silvagni and Macreadie now that he has finally reappeared.
The patchwork season that the reserves is does not help in this endeavour.

Yep, Kelly and Petrucelle from that list for me.

An elite mid and a player with outside run and kicking distance.

You don’t give up two firsts (assumed for Papley) for a small forward. You do for a Kelly.
Small forwards are a nice to have, but they don’t win you premierships.

Our forward set-up revolves around marking bigs, need to identify B grade smalls similar to Butler to support them. That will be enough.

We‘d be selling the farm for Papley in my opinion.

Posted along these lines here last week.
Really think Kelly needs to be our primary focus.

Haven’t gone through all pages RB.
Would try and trade out with WC at the end of the year.
Not knowing what we have traded as far as picks go
Something like our second for Petrucelle
Package up SPS and a future second? for West Coasts / Freos first
Our two firsts for Kelly.

The right additions at the right time.

Sure, we could use Kelly, Papley and Wines. Problem I've got is that both are going to cost heaps in terms of cap and in terms of picks required to get them. Williams will be for sale in a seller's market. I'm not convinced selling the farm for a single player constitutes good list management. I don't think getting Kelly would solve all our woes; he misses, on average, between 4 and 5 games a season. Wines would be better, as he's a leader who gets his own ball, but he's not a miracle cure either.

We need to be smart, and we need to look at the next rung. We need to find a Jarryd Lyons rather than a Josh Kelly. I don't know who that is - look at WC's second tier, Duggan, Venables; George Hewitt or Ollie Florent; Maclean from WB, Lin Jong - but I'm uncomfortable with how quickly we on here revert from growth from within and 'we're good enough without midfield support' to 'let's overpay for a marquee midfielder!'

More than one way to skin a cat.

We could add a gun mid like Kelly and hope that improves our supply.

Or we could add a quality small defender/distributor and start using SPS in the midfield for the same result.

Or we could add a quality small forward and start using Martin through the middle with more regularity for the same result.

I don't much mind which, but for me a combination of small forward (ie. Papley) and small defender (ie. Laird or Witherden) hits two of the three approaches to increase the chance of success, is more achievable/likely than Kelly or Williams, and fits better with our list profile given we'd expect some of Dow, Stocker, O'Brien, Kemp, Fisher etc. to break into the midfield sooner rather than later. We've invested heavily in the midfield for a reason.

Ultimately, it'll probably come down to who is available - so nice to have options.
Geez those 5 names Dow Stocker Kemp Fisher Obrien none in the side atm thats a lot of draft pick collateral pretty much all mids .
Clearly we need a readymade quality mid but geez if we cant fix our mid issues with that expense in higher draft picks then i guess theres some questions to be asked .

Williams and Papley would be ideal imo

Wouldn’t imagine to many issues getting Petrucelle done if he’s keen and that’s the way Austin wants to go.
We have both this year’s and next year’s 1sts available for Kelly if need be but i fear if Teague continues with his deckchair policy, we may have some of our rated youth looking elsewhere for opportunity ...

These are the players on our list that I think are way behind the level they should be
Cunningham,Kennedy,sps,obrien,Dow,
setterfield,Fisher all should be more consistent than they are.development is a big issue at club
McGovern has been a huge disappointment
Simmo Betts and Murphy are just about cooked
Other players are not even close to afl level players
Some bold list management needs to happen at yrs end
Big issue in the coaches box too
Piss barker and Bruce off

I think the reality is, as fans, we just got a bit ahead of ourselves.

Was going to be a big ask going from a bottom 6 side to top 4, or even comfortably top 8. This is the awkward, teasing, in-between year. Our best will be great, our worst will be terrible, but it's just a necessary step on our way to becoming consistent. Consistently poor -> inconsistent -> consistently good.

Realigning expectations now.
