So what we saw from this week's play was a need for more hardness, speed and smarts around the footy. A better wingman and better quicker small forwards who are willing to apply pressure.

I would love to add an elite smaller centerman into the mix who just does it all well. But who? Is Kelly still a thing?

Players who don't tackle and can't kick need not apply.

Absolutely pace and precision is our greatest need.
More pressure from the forwards and midfield, along with breakaway pace off half back and outside mid areas. The frustrating part is that we have
most of this available to us on the list. We need to test the "kids" and some roles. The top 22 at the moment consists of many "almost" players who
do many things well, but have some fatal flaws under pressure. I am stuffed if I know why we are hanging on to "leaders" who have failed for years
when the blowtorch is applied.

To my mind, both Kennedy and Cuningham need games and time to actually get a run at their respective careers, where Butler has only ever been sporadically at AFL level. We need small forwards, but we do not need a small forward who is at VFL level half the time.

All of these players are different, and bring slightly different things.
Butler continues to do well. Another two goals yesterday. We definitely should’ve picked him up.

I just so love it when someone tries to continue an argument weeks old anew.

Butler contines to do well, as is his wont as a) a player traded in his first season, b) as a form player in good form, and c) in a team coached by someone who is a fan of the slingshot play, something to which he is suited. Perhaps go through my posting in this thread if it suits you; I've a post where I've demonstrated that his form is extremely variable, and his worst is VFL level if not worse.

There are other options, and he wound up going for more than we were willing to pay for his position. And we need more than just a pressure forward.

Been a fair while since i have posted anything and just wanted to say how happy i am with the current team as a whole albeit a few games which is understandable from a team that finished bottom 3 last year. Been some terrific moments and some horrible ones so jusy need to work on consistency in effort and hardness at the ball as well as our efficiency by foot.
When we are tackling well we normally win

Having said that, a team can always improve and I would like to see us make a play for 3 players in this seasons trade period.

Tom Papley - bull forward who can play well through the midfield and hold his own. Maybe used in tandem with Martin and Gibbons.
Cost: 2 x firsts and a second coming back
(High price but similar to that of Brad Hill)

Will Brodie - inside midfielder who seems out of favour and not in the best 22 even with Rowell being injured. Not speedy but not slow and could give good service alongside Cripps, Kennedy & Setterfield.
Cost: a late second or early third

Jack Petruccelle - small zippy forward who needs a lot of work developing his game. Who better than Eddie to help him improve and take his game to a new level. He would be able to release Martin, Gibbons and even Papley to rotate through the midfield without effecting our structures.
Cost: 3rd or early 4th rounder.

Thoughts?

I think once you get a notion in your head it becomes remarkably difficult to shift, and you then find ways to justify them when presented with new evidence in either direction.

This is not intended as criticism, merely observation.
Perhaps apply your own advice regarding new evidence for Butler.

Dont think Will Brodie is needed given we have kennedy setters jsos alrdy.

The other 2? Yes pls

.... is this a pisstake?

I have demostrated that Butler spends periods where his form is up; sometimes for 3 games, sometimes for 6-7. We have had 9 games this season; hardly enough to form a sample size. I have also demonstrated that Butler when down is not AFL level.

When Butler spends an entire season - even this season, shortened as it is - at AFL level, I will amend my opinion, but he hasn't done that. You - as the original posters I argued this with - can bookmark the post, and bring it to my attention, if me being or admitting that I was wrong is worth so much to you.

Not that I disagree, but given his age, do you think he would have been a better option than Betts

Getting the champ treatment for someone who thinks Melbourne are finishing higher than us. 2020 really is a strange year after all
A guy who thinks he runs the place. Lets chat at the end of the year before you continue running your mouth. You bore me

Not if bringing Betts in had an impact on getting Martin, as has been talked about.

There's that and even more, if Betts finds himself a role at the club post playing career.

He's a rare individual in this sport and not solely for his connection with the indigenous community. It goes further than that.

Perhaps we should separate off field contributions, also difficult to quantify

Correct.

To simply judge Betts on his on field performances is unfair, given we know he hasn't just been brought back to add value in that capacity.

Course that's a benefit, but what players would we attract if we had possibly won more games on the back of Butler's output

Guess that's difficult to quantify

I don't believe we would have won many (if any) more games had we had Butler in the forward pocket instead of Betts.

I don't think it's something you can just ignore. It likely constitutes a significant reason why we went for one over the other so it has to be considered, though you're right it is difficult to quantify.

The other thing worth mentioning is money, which would have also been a consideration, but we're not going to know the exact figures.

Will Teague look at Adelaide for a few bargains?

He’d be thinking he could get the best out of a Laird, Smith, MCrouch etc. Proven footballers in some horrible form.

Wouldn’t mind taking a punt on one at the right price. Teague would know best. Laird my pick of the bunch.

Laird would be elite, perfect age and toughness to come with beautiful kicking skills. Im confident he would go for cheap given Adelaides current situation, but if they are asking first rounders hard pass.
They arent really in a great bargaining position as they are desperate to hit the draft, he's a bit non essential in the grand scheme of their list
