TEAGUE should prioritise players from winning cultures
All 3 of those players have played in a Grand Final, they know winning culture more than 99% of our list.

TEAGUE should prioritise players from winning cultures
The problem with Brodie is encapsulated in our win against GC last year; he'd win the ball, then proceed to kick it immediately, without looking or even really trying to find someone to give it to.If aquiring Brodie adds pressure to those guys mentioned above then it's my belief that the team will be all the better.
JSOS has more of the run with tagging role (eg. Ed Curnow) than the others. His stints in the midfield so far have given the impression the coaches haven't really let him play the inside, hunt the ball style of play.
Will Brodie:
(Below is taken from bigfooty Will Brodie forum)
Only played 8 games last season but finds the ball with ease. Has been working on disposal and defensive efforts, but still not enough to get an opportunity in the seniors since Rd1.
Potential is huge. But no idea if he fulfils it.

Reserves match reports this season
Will Brodie:
Will impacted the game well playing a mix of midfield and forward. He had nine score involvements and looked very dangerous when playing in our forward line. Will is usually very strong at stoppages but was beaten this week inside so will look to focus on this Thursday against the Dogs.
Will Brodie:
Wiz played most of the game as an inside midfielder for us. He won some good balls around the contest but was inconsistent at stoppages due to body work and handball execution. Will sets a high standard for himself so will be wanting to have more of an impact in this area on the weekend.
Will Brodie:
Will had another solid game this weekend as an inside midfielder and is winning the ball well at stoppages. He’s been working hard on the defensive aspect of his game and it was pleasing to see a few examples of excellent defensive work-rate from Will. This will need to remain a strong focus to push for senior selection.
Will Brodie:
Will played as an inside mid and continues to have a positive impact at stoppages. He was strong offensively and help set up seven scoring shots. Will continues to play with strong defensive intent and needs to be consistent with this to earn an AFL recall.
Rookie drafted players...our usual MO is previous 1st round picks.
Be nice if our own rookie picks came on but no one of note since Garlett, Ed, Levi & to a lesser extent White, Bell (but we failed at the ND).
Gibbo is the last one outside the ND.
Hopefully Cottrell gets some showtime soon & at least we’ve delved into some talented forwards in Honey (debut soon?) & Phillips this time around.
Owies some hope as our Cat B but our dysfunctional forward line could be hard to play in from the transition from the “VFL”/practice matches.
Will Teague look at Adelaide for a few bargains?
He’d be thinking he could get the best out of a Laird, Smith, MCrouch etc. Proven footballers in some horrible form.
Wouldn’t mind taking a punt on one at the right price. Teague would know best. Laird my pick of the bunch.

It’s going to be interesting to see how we play a few of our kids over the next 8 rounds.
I keep hearing a lot of talk about trying players like Cunners and SPS time in the midfield but personally if we are going down that path then surely we actually invest those opportunities into our best asset in that area in Walsh. Doesn’t have to be full time but surely give him a taste of it before anyone else. I really don’t think we invested pick 1 on him to sit him out on a wing his whole career so he should be the cab off the rank.
Cuningham is a tough one. He doesn’t look like a footballer more just a guy with a couple of great footballing traits. For me he just isn’t smart enough or good enough to play anything other then a specific role. He needs a job imo. I wouldn’t be against him playing on someone like Gaff this week as he does have the weapons to hurt him going the other way. Long term maybe even a defensive forward who plays on the guys like Daniel, Whitfield, Doc ect. Part of me wants to see him get time in the midfield but there are only so many spots in there and it seems almost wasted developing him there when it’s probably fully expected that guys like Setterfield and Walsh will be the long term future not Cuningham so just seems like somewhat of a waste giving him that time and not those other guys.
SPS is also another hard one to judge. Personally I think he would play better individual footy playing more midfield but I’m not sure that he would make us a better team in doing so. Setterfield, Cripps and SPS would look nice but I could see them being exploited massively by sides with better runners. They just don’t have the running power of other strong sides. I would be keeping him down back because I now think that is where his long term future is with the way our midfield looks to be developing with a lack of speed. In saying that if Setters or Kennedy don’t develop like we hope that could easily change.
I really like a Setterfield, Cripps combo but one negative is that is makes the third position in there difficult to fill. Walsh and Dow are probably the best two options on our list to do so but I also think it puts a lot of pressure on us to find genuine pace out on the wings. Imo we need Fisher back in to try and add that zip around the edges of the contests and be that second link in the chain being delivered the ball by Cripps, Curnow, Setterfield and then out to the outside players. I’ve been totally against gifting games but if his attitude is right LOB may be the guy to give game time to. We really need to find out what we have got on the outside and he is about the only one who has the mix we need but the problem is we don’t even know if he is any good or not.
We really need a couple of things in the back half of this year and that’s for one of our young kids to actually become a good second midfielder, not just glimpses but playing good consistent footy. The quicker we find out if they are the players who are going to drive our improvement or are going to just be role players the quicker the club can work out who they should be chasing. The second one is find out if LOB, Cuningham and Fisher are going to offer that pace around the ball or if they aren’t up to it because that will dramatically influence who we chase. We still have Philp as this type on our list so this could either be a massive problem or we might just be jumping at shadows.
I do not think they alone propel us into top 4 contention. We need at least 1-2 midfield ins as well; someone more inside than out to compensate if Cripps is off and to supplement Setterfield and Walsh, and someone more dynamic that acts as a gobetween midfield and forward 50.IMO we've gone to the draft enough now and it's time to make a statement and really target players that we need. We have space in our cap to really be aggressive as well. Williams and Papley on our list makes us a legit finals contender. And Charlie comes back as well.
The only hole we will need to consider replacing on our list will be Jones, who has done an amazing job when it looked like he'd be cut all of those years ago. We have enough coverage for Murphy and Simpson.

I think it’ll be the same as this year where we need Willo, Setterfield, Kennedy, Walsh, Dow, LOB, SPS, Cuningham ect to go from either C graders to B graders or B graders to A graders. Until that happens we just won’t be consistent enough. Personally I would expect that to happen with enough of them that adding Williams and Papley should absolutely put us into contention. The age profile would be about perfect it’ll just depend on ability I guess.I do not think they alone propel us into top 4 contention. Interesting and makes a lot of sense.these were Mick McGuane's comments on Friday morning - seems prescient
JEKYLL AND HYDE BLUES
Carlton’s strength is its front-half game, with a strong scoring profile and the fifth-highest time in forward half differential this season.
That’s the good … and that’s a reason why they are in top 8 discussions.
Now, for the bad …
The Blues have conceded 28.8 points per game to opposition defensive half chains – 18th in the AFL.
The inability to defend opposition ball movement means they have allowed their opposition to generate an inside 50 from 41 per cent of their defensive-midfield chains, ranked 16th.
That’s why North Melbourne remained in the game last week longer than it should have.
David Teague also needs to be mindful of what is going on with his mids.
The Blues’ midfield depth has been impressive. But one aspect diminishes part of their good work.
Opposition midfielders are hitting the scoreboard too frequently against the Blues.
An increase in accountability must be a priority as the Blues have conceded 33 goals this year to opposition mids, mid-forwards and wingmen – the most of any side.
Clarko will look to use his most offensive weapons around the footy, not just to curtail Patrick Cripps, but to work off him, Marc Murphy and Will Setterfield when attacking.
The Blues must be wary of this. If Shiels, Jaeger O’Meara, Isaac Smith or Tom Scully hit the scoreboard, it could be disastrous for Teague and his men.
Spot on and that’s why I’m torn on where to play SPS because he is another one that will get exposed with that group. It could also be why Stocker can’t get a look in too.Interesting and makes a lot of sense.
I think man for man our defense could handle most forwardlines in the AFL, yet our defensive stats are pretty poor. I think that's got more to do with the type of ball that's coming in so often, most defenses can't do anything about it. Our midfield doesn't provide the pressure and our defense gets punished for it.
Thinking about it, of our midfielders only 1 could be considered good defensively - Ed Curnow. As much as everyone loves Cripps once the ball leaves the contest in opposition hands he's a liability, as is Kennedy, as is Murphy. Setterfield has great tackle numbers and inside the contest he's awesome, but once it gets out again he's a liability.
We lack 2 way midfielders and it crushes our back 6. Our gameplan also doesn't lend itself to good midfield pressure as Teague wants us to play attacking, so naturally we'll get forward and be lacking if there's a turnover.
It makes sense that the Hawks with there great running mids and St Kilda a very slick moving side both got hold of us and have made us look elementary.
It's also why I'm nervous about us targeting and being willing to give up so much for Wines and/or Crouch. Basically the same can be said of them. Not much defensive chase in them.Spot on and that’s why I’m torn on where to play SPS because he is another one that will get exposed with that group. It could also be why Stocker can’t get a look in too.
Clark is going to be a top 10 in the future way too composed and strong not to be good. Saints have a beautyThat draft year just seem to be finding their feet after a very slow start. Coffield and Clark also looking the goods atm.
At the Suns game yesterday he and Whitfield stood out for me. It looks like Hopper is much leaner these days, it's really helped him.I want jacob hopper. I remember sos went hard for him but he re-signed wonder if we go at him again.
Jet. Would love him in navy blue if it was somehow possibleAt the Suns game yesterday he and Whitfield stood out for me. It looks like Hopper is much leaner these days, it's really helped him.
I was blown away by Whitfield tbh the way he runs is just unbelievable. I always knew he was skillful but the way he gets up and down the field is just remarkable. A couple of times he got the ball and I went "What? Wasn't he just in the back pocket? How's he in the centre circle already?".
After seeing him yesterday if there was 1 player in the comp I could have it'd be him. His defensive running is just as hard as his attacking run.Jet. Would love him in navy blue if it was somehow possible
