Terrific that we are interested in Williams.
He would be a fantastic get as a FA.
Assume every other club would be interested also.
Williams apparently though has no desire to leave the Giants, he just needs a suitable contract from them.
The ball is in the Giants court, if they want him, he’ll stay.
If they do retain him and Cameron, which apparently they are very confident of, something else may have to give ...

The Giants can find the money to satisfy Williams, who has no desire to leave, if they want to.
GWS may simply be more open to losing what they can more easily replace ...

Source?

Williams would be a great pickup and perfect for our side. Could slot in at either half back or midfield depending on fitness of other players. I’d be hoping to get him as a free agent especially if GWS finish outside of finals a compensation pick would land in the top 10. Would be handy for GWS who traded away their first round pick for this year and have a draft deficit from last year pushing back their round two pick. Maybe give them Kreuzer on the cheap for a late draft pick to keep GWS happy by sweetening their end of the stick. I know Kreuzer could go there as a free agent but it would affect their compensation if he did.

Williams would be great for the development of Willo, SPS and could really add a layer of speed into our midfield. Still think both Murphy and Simpson play on next year but Williams would certainly be a fantastic replacement for either.

Still think Papley should be our main focus however picking up Williams as a Free Agent would probably justify us playing slight overs for Papley.

If we could somehow get both then we would be close to having one of the best lists in the AFL in my opinion. Great to see us becoming an attractive destination for players. It certainly hasn’t been that way for a long time.

You've got to be careful when trading away high draft picks.
You might be giving up more than you bargained for.
A nice sliding doors moment for the Carlton Football Club.

Richmond gave away a high draft pick.......and 2 Premierships later.

It doesn't matter so much for what you think you may have got, compared to what you actually got, when you needed it most.

Prestia wasn't the reason they won the flag. Richmond had more than half their starting 22 having career best years.

It was a team effort, not the individual that brought them success.

I'm sure Carlton would have said similar when they traded away Josh Kennedy to WCE.

There's a lot on here that don't even care what we bring in, just as long as we trade our first pick away. It's completely irrational thinking.

If we land only one player in Zac Williams this trade period and have to go to the draft with another first rounder, I wouldn't be calling that a failed off-season by any stretch of the imagination.

Exactly, he has the tools, the coaches need to play him to his strengths and stop trying to force something he is not, if he struggles to read the play and find the ball, put him somewhere where it’s done for him.

To see him have that game and then see him regress in the following weeks looking back was garbage by our club.
Yes as arrow said earlier give him run with role -- roatate with Ed -- but how much was the calf affecting him after that game

Yes, good young players are often selected with early draft picks.

This is the price teams often play when looking to take the next step.

Nothing exactly new there.

Really dumb article.

What if we took Fyfe instead of Kane Lucas? What if we had kicked straighter in the semifinal against WCE?

No point looking at hypotheticals.

What do you disagree with Juddernaut08 ?

Do you not like Patrick Cripps playing for Carlton? Prefer him to be playing for another club?

It always is though, but you still need the right pieces in their right places.

You know what I'd consider if we didn't get what we wanted utilising our first?
I'd consider a swap for a first and something next year to a team desperate to go hard in this draft

One very important factor, when trading in a player, is how much time they have left in the game

Just another reason why the likes of Kelly isn't worth 2 mid 1st rounders, for us
Certainly is a factor, but 25 is safe. 27 I'd start being conservative

The point is we drafted Patrick Cripps.

So any player taken via trade with that pick now has to be compared with Patrick Cripps.

Yet a lot on here still propose trades without giving consideration to what we might be giving up.

You think people don’t consider that giving up an early draft pick means we probably miss on a good young player?

Just because the preference is to trade the pick, doesn’t mean there is no consideration of the alternative.

Given your thoughts on Papley and attempts to talk him down at every opportunity, I’d say you are the one applying tunnel vision here.

Actually Arr0w you made me second guess myself. I am a big fan of Kelly and think that he would be a great compliment to Cripps and half of me would happily give up 2 first round picks for half a decade plus of service, but, although old data, it would statistically be sacrificing two players who should give out over a lot of games collectively in the future.

You'd want to be very, very sure you had all the pieces in place.

Yes. Especially when I read posts saying we've got enough kids and that hitting the draft with a first rounder will be a failed trade period/off-season.

Not going to name names, but the statements by some have already been made.

Don't have tunnel vision. Just think there are more pressing needs given the emergence of Fisher in our forward line.
