We still need senior players, bu not all of them.

Happy for Ed to stay on the list, but I would tap, Eddie, Simmo, Murphy and Krooz on the shoulder and say thanks, but next year we are heading in a different direction

I think Simmo & Ed should stay. Simmo makes mistakes but still finds the footy and inspires those around him.

Murph finds the footy but i think he's bad for the development of guys like Dow, Cunningham, LOB etc.

Both Simmo and Murphy have been great servants of the club . If the club isnt prepared to make the tough call at the end of the year it will signal to me that we have a weak hierarchy and culture at the club. I wont blame the players for holding out for another contract but I will lose all respect I have for our football department and board of directors should these two continue.

You still want him kicking it to our forwards?

My preference is that he tags and gets contested possessions. He wins or impacts so many contests he's invaluable for mine.

I dont blame Ed that those around him can't take advantage of what he brings.

I think LOB has more potential/be a better player than Dow long term, i wouldn't be trading him.

Just my opinion as a keen football fan and observer, I don't proclaim to be some kind of List Manger or Draft Guru, there is no doubt Paddy Dow has a lot of talent, but is it unreasonable to expect we should have seen more from Dow (a top 3 draft pick) by now ?
Really? 20 year old mid who has played one game this year. What do you imagine we'd get for him that would be a significant upgrade on the potential value he has for our list long term? No club would pay more than a mid second rounder for him. Better off giving him a few more years. Also, I know the retort will be "trade him and a first rounder for Papley". This is stupid as you're giving up a bloke we took with pick 3 who has plenty of development ahead of him and a pick 7 for a small forward who can pinch hit in the middle.

This season has been especially tough for guys who missed the preseason and start of the season through injury as the 2s matches have been so bruise free and short. Surely you can write a bloke off with this lack of proper preparation?

I'll remember this Elmer

Every game Simmo and Murph get is a game some of our youngsters don't.
Stuff feeling obligated to play them because they've been great servants, we need to see if some of these young guys can play.
We need to keep pushing forward, not regress to the past

They are both still in our best 22. Hopefully next year they are pushed out by others but if it’s about winning games now and developing a competitive winning culture they should be played. IMO Kreuzer and Eddie will only be solid depth next year if retained, and if so are they worth retaining? ECurnow can play as long as he likes at this rate.

After the last 10 or so years I’m not even convinced pumping games into kids for the sake of it works all that well, in fact it may have spooked some of our kids. Continuity and becoming familiar with your role is most important, both of those can be honed at VFL level.

I enjoyed seeing Dow in the centre against the Pies. In the past he’d have been stuck on a half forward flank despite playing 2s as a mid and training as a mid. Didn’t set the world on fire but no one really did.

Now that we are not playing finals we need to rest some of our senior players and give our youngsters some AFL exposure. Would love to see Macreadie replace Plowman. There is a chance he maybe delisted so why not play him now? Bring back Honey and play him all over the ground, persevere with Dow in the middle and Polson down back, Cottrell and LOB on the wing. These players wont develop playing mickey mouse 12 a side football. Lets rest some of our senior players for the sake of player development.

We would have to be the most fickle fans in the competition. One bad half after a competitive season and half the teams needs to be chopped or traded, the kids all of a sudden suck and we need to trade everything for a few established players....

Calm your farm. Every team this year has had up and down weeks. We are one of the few teams who have provided consistent efforts.

Do I think our list is the finished product? No way. Do I think we need to scrap half the side? No way.

How can you blame Plowman when the mids applies next to zero pressure, providing ample space for Stephenson, one of the quickest forwards in the league, to take uncontested marks. No defender would stop that and shut it with the whipping boy shit. Its rubbish.

The reality is we need to be patient still and accept there will be bumps along the journey. Not every kid on the list will be a hit but surely you can't write them off so soon.

As for the experienced guys, I'd be hanging onto them as long as I could. If dow, O'Brien, Cunningham stocker and co want to play senior footy the smash the door down and displace these guys. This is what builds a strong, successful club - guys getting games because they cannot be ignored anymore through strong performances, not games for the sake of development.

Murph is the only one I think NEEDS to go. Ed is in my "we're in strife if he leaves" category.
Agree on Ed. If list size drops to 40 then I still think we keep ED.

Ed was probably our most productive Mid last week (although Walsh got a vote). Must play on.

Ed is more valuable than Murphy based on current output. But Murphy is still earning a spot and it is up to the youngsters to go past him. Could play on.

Lose Simmo - we have Newman or Polson, unless we get GWS recruit Z. Williams (if we got very lucky). Probably time to go.

Lose Betts - we have Cuningham or Owies showing a bit in the 2s, maybe Honey/Phillips? so that hurts unless Papely is still keen. I like the way Owies is playing and a goal sneak who is happy to take shots would help in the 1s. Betts at his best we keep but Probably time to go.

Lose Kreuzer and we lose a massive point of difference. Imagine how much a fit Kreuzer would add against GWS this week. But it is just not happening anymore unfortunately. TDK, Pitto and Casboult are limited role players in comparison. Probably time to go.

Jones had a tough day Sunday, hope he can recover and dominate against GWS. Should play on one more year and probably Goddard has to go.

Casboult fading? not imposing, taking marks or kicking goals in recent games. Versatility should mean we keep him if K. retires, but if K. is good for 2021 then Probably time to go.

These are very hard decisions
But only way to found out if the young guys are any good

Ed is almost in career best form.

So you're confident a senior player like Murph would get dropped should his form deteriorate? How can we as a club preach accountability and strong contested football whilst former leaders of the club like Murphy don't adhere. It diminishes our team culture because it exposes the double standard. What is said to the players doesn't line up with reality. If I was O'Brien I would be pissed.

What if he requests a trade at the end of the season, as one of our posters alluded to ?

Pretty much of the opinion there is no point keep players around (even contracted) who do not want to be here. Would make for an uncomfortable playing environment somewhat.

What does that mean? We cant have Setters Crippa and Ed play alongside each other. Setters doesnt provide value as a wingman so do we drop him until Ed retires or build him up as our no 2 inside mid?

They can coexist, provided there is adequate speed around them. This is dependent on Walsh, Dow, Cuningham, LOB, Fisher, Cottrell all becoming AFL-calibre midfielders.

Forgot about the likes of Kemp, Philp, Ramsay, who are a fair way off at the moment.

Murphy hasnt been that bad this year. Murphy is not a contested beast. He is an outside player whose role is to provide a link between defence and attack. He is the best kick inside 50.

I'm not dealing in baseless assumptions and rumours. Dow is a contracted, required player. Until that changes, then that's how its staying. Your shifting the goalposts as usual Elmer. One minute we should trade dow, when that is challenged all of a sudden he wants to be traded because some nuffy on a football forum said he did....

Rubbish. How about we try and win as many bloody games as we can? I'm sick of this shit losing culture. Let's put our best team on the park every week, irrespective if it is round 1 or 17 and try and win. That's what develops a clubs culture...winning. if those blokes in the 2s aren't happy that they aren't being gifted games for the sake of development then suck it up. Turn up for the first day of preseason and smash. The. Door. Down. Come back fitter, stronger and more determined than ever.

Agree on this
Jono Brown for 2 days a week over the summer please

Take Nick Riewoldt first,
Every game Simmo and Murph get is a game some of our youngsters don't.
Stuff feeling obligated to play them because they've been great servants, we need to see if some of these young guys can play.

A week ago Murph was BOG and Simmo has been solid, we are a long way from a side that needs to ‘blood’ young players.. we have done that for years and it never works.. We need to be playing our best 22, the team most likely to make us win every single week and currently Murph and Simmo are clearly best 22. Eddie was okay on the weekend, but if a player is going to make way he is the player that has the most question marks.

This talk about Betts getting another year has to be pure speculation surely? It is harsh because they have been fantastic players but 2020 needs to be Betts and Simpson's last.

If we had a bit more integrity in selection they both may have been dropped at stages this year. We need to move forward with the youth on our list. Look at Williamson he is developing and looking more comfortable each week. I'm really starting to think we have missed a trick this year not seeing more of the list in the one's.

Maybe as back up and to entice willams from gws ? Eddie is a leader. As long as he doesn’t take up too much salary cap space I’m ok with it. Don’t mind it. None of owies honey have proved anything yet.

It’d be total revisionism from me to say otherwise, I was very sold on the idea of playing our absolute best 22 every week to enable a hopeful finals push

Now we are seemingly out of that race I can’t but help think about this though...

Perhaps we should play Owies, Honey types for extended periods too

Very interesting on the AFL exchange podcast Riley Bev said hed spoken to blues officials about Kemp and they surprisingly see him as a line breaking 3rd tall intercept defender. Really throws the team balance out of whack even thinking about it. Maybe thats why they want Marchy playing wing?

You are making assumptions on a RUMOUR.

I never understood the HBF talk for him, he's 192cm and always played that medium/third tall in U/18's both forward and back. His biggest assets IMO are his hands and athleticism for his size, which makes him perfect for the intercepting role.

Attacks start from the back half. We have no one, if he can do what saad does then yes please. Back in the club.

If Kreuzer is fit by the end of the year I'd give him another year. He can help develop TDK and Pitto and is a good back-up.

The other 3 should go.
