Beautiful. Pick 1 is ours.

Come on down life long crows fan Elijah Hollands.

Our very own Bontompelli X Dangerfield with better foot skills.
You’re going to be crying if we don’t pick him, best not to get too hopeful, we’ve got a habit of ****ing things up

how good will this night grand final in a Brisbane October be

fu** me dead

no one will be able to mark the footy

they gotta bring in the junior footys with the dimples
The flag is Richmond’s, they’ve got the game plan to not rely on marking.

Their style will be suited perfectly.

I will definitely cry if we **** this up.

He's exactly what we need plus he's best available on talent plus there is zero flight risk.
That pesky ACL is a risk, but the rest does check out.

If we're going to go a midfield option he's probably the best for us. Phillips is a better player now, but he's a bit..... Vanilla. Mind you, I'd be happy with him.

I'm in favour of selecting hollands given we get pick 2, but there is another looming risk with him and it's something that shouldn't be brushed aside. It's not an obvious choice.

Elijah Hollands is also just a name that you know will be a champion sportsman haha.

Fcuk the ACL. Let him slide and it will be Joel Selwood all over again. Fortune favours the brave.

It's blatantly obvious. We haven't won anything for over two decades. Same old conservative dribble will get us nowhere.

Take the risk. Hollands will win games off his own boot and will carry a team with him.

He won't have to slide far to us this time.

And yes it is a good name.

Correct me if I am Wrong but if the
Saints beat GWS by 30pts,
Brisbane who don't need to win for the Double home game chance, lose to Carlton by 20+
Crows get Pick 7

I don't think our drafting has been conservative as such, I mean even Fogarty and Moose were risks due to injury.

We've shown that's no barrier to us.

Everyone here is assuming we lose to Richmond. Unlikely we win I know, but being wet changes things imo. Slows the game to a more contested one. Richmond don't rely on winning clearances moreso off the back of intercepting and moving it quick. The wet could make it closer than expected.

I would say it comes down to desperation against a team with players wanting to play in October Finals and guarding against injury.

If we bring the game style when we played v Cats, we could roll them.

Biggest problem is that we will go too tall up forward. Tex, Fog, Berg, just one too many talls and immobile too.

I like McAdam and Stengle on a night like this.

I'm more concerned that we will have a hard on for talls
We do need them, I mean Strachan and Billy don't look like they have it. Happy to go Thilthorpe/McDonald and Holland though, and then another mid with the Giants pick.

There's Brave and there's stupid.

I don't know much about Holland's, I do know the club has been open to taking risks.

But if the injury he has, has an impact to his main weapon, then it's a smart club to be cautious.

I only get to see highlights.

But Thilthorpe looks ahead of Strachan already. but again, I only see highlights.

Yeah if Brad leaves I'm happy to take another tall with pick 2. Just don't want us to default to picking a tall at 1 because Hollands will be a game beaker.

Hamish seems to feel more comfortable picking talls and he does well at it but we really need a good sized mid with speed and foot skills that can impact the scoreboard.

My feeling without going through all the records is that history is generally unkind to those who go tall with pick 1. They take so long to develop its always a bit of gamble.

It's objectively not obvious. Someone doing their acl is a serious risk for a top draft pick.

Do I lean on the side of taking that risk for the same reasons as you've said? Yes. But it could turn out to be a horrible mistake and therefore is something that I hope the team is carefully considering.

I wish there was a Rowell in 2020.

Yeah fair enough. You'll just have to trust the gods on this one. Hollands is da man.

From when I've gone through it, it's about the same as midfielders (though, less sample size of course). Couple of premiership players in Gardner and Boyd. Couple of nearly men with that, but at least found a pretty useful niche in a strong side in Fraser and Koschitzke. Some had their peak destroyed by injury, or alternatively were unlucky to spend their career at a shit-show in Waterhouse, Kruzier and McCartin.

Really, whether pick 1 is kind or unkind is really dependant on if the team is an absolute shit show or not and luck to avoid the injury curse.

Yeah nah. Hawthorn were an absolute shitshow when they took Hodge.

I'm sure there are plenty more examples just can't be effed looking them up. It comes down to talent and will. Not the state of the club at the time.

Hawks were mid-table when they took Hodge (finished 11th that year, 8th in 2000, 9th in 1999, 13th in 1998). They were nothing more than a team existing in the mid-table. Not bad enough to be competing for pick 1. Not good enough to make any noise and get a top 4 spot.

It completely comes down to the state of the club, and luck. If you want to be a pick one and win a premiership, the trick is to not go to (or to leave) the last place side and if you do, pick the one who has done a 1998 Brisbane and collapsed out of nowhere*. The picks ones who genuinely fail are the ones that get injured a lot. The ones who don't live up to the hype end up are the ones who have ended up at poorly ran clubs, usually ones who have had to rebuild a rebuild.

*Poor Josh Fraser, lost his spot in the best 22 the year Collingwood won it as the exception.

I will respectfully disagree. I think gun players improve clubs rather than vice versa.

Some wiggle room in the middle where clubs with great lists can make average players look very good, but that is a conversation the current AFC isn't party to.
