I don't think McKenna ever recovered from being owned by Allan Jeans after this infamous World of Sport episode

He had every right to ask the question though and Jeanes just deflected it. A dog act by Matthews who was nearly charged by police and should have been. It changed the "what happens on the field stays on the field" narrative forever.
Bruns has since tried to talk to Matthews about it but Leigh isn't interested. What a guy.

Somebody showed me a montage of all of Leigh Matthews underhanded conduct on the field and I completely lost all respect for the guy. I like hard players but Matthews was just a thug.

He inspired that same thug attitude in his players too. I still remember Brisbane players deliberately smashing into Riewoldt as he was trying to leave the field with a dislocated shoulder for example.

I want to know what people here think we should do. I'm quite confident that what we actually do will be incompetent
An afl-wide plan, not us dealing with it, but it's not so bad if they do this:

No draft this year.
Draft order and pick trades from this year carried to 2021 draft. (same player cohort will be selected).
2022 order to be based on combined win/loss from 2021+2022 (plus change from this year if relevant)

Deals already done are still honoured. Crap teams will looked after. Good teams will get (numerically) higher picks. May have an anomaly of a boom/bust team getting better picks than they should, but that happens anyway.

He's inherited a shit sandwich. We had arguably the worst football department in the AFL in the last two years, which includes the complete lack of development (and regression in some cases) of our squad.

Not selecting Hartigan and Mackay was a good start.

Having Mackay ready to suit up if a late out eventuates was a poor start. 30+ year old fringe player ahead of kids in a rebuild year. And then there’s the selection of Gibbs off the back of a woeful last half of 2019 and a putrid preseason. And then there’s the lauding of his absolutely diabolical game in round 1. And Hartigan had a seriously interrupted preseason and we had a pick 6 available who plays CHB, not a particularly difficult call that one.

I’m comfortable calling it early, Nicksy is a complete dud.

I’m not convinced Nicks is a complete dud. I do think he’ll finish up being an interim coach though.

Actually Will Hamill would've played.

Youre a naturally pessimistic person.

And ?? Rooey was on the field, he was fair game.

1)The rules actually don't allow physical violence off the ball
2)even if they did, it was such a disgraceful display of a complete lack of sportsmanship

I don't really understand how people can excuse actions like that.

I’m not, I just see the writing on the wall and am prepared to call it a bit earlier than most. The Gibbs thing and Mackay being an emergency worry you, but you’re hoping against your best instincts that they’re outliers rather than a sign of things to come. I don’t see how any coach with a future could select Gibbs and then publicly praise his game. It’s not pessimism to to interpret the obvious and reach a logical conclusion.

Nicksy will be liked but when it doesn’t translate to consistently winning, relationships built on being nice fail in spectacular fashion.

Wasn’t there two parts, one where he stayed on the field and one whilst he was trying to get off?

Even though we've only seen very little, I'm already over the smiley Bolton-esque persona. He was chosen from a pretty ordinary list of available candidates IMO so I'm not expecting much. Gone in two seasons.

Plus he’s supported by whatever rookie or spud we could get from the bargain bin. Remove Nicksy and our coaching group wouldn’t look out of place at a well resourced SANFL club. Where our footy dept cap goes remains a mystery.

I’m starting to think if the AFL decides to reduce club expendure, the soft cap may be another target. There have been commentary from over the border promoting a reduction in coaching panels.

There may be some good people looking for opportunities at the end of the year

Mackay wasn't picked in the 2nd PS game, that tells you he was unlikely to feature. Hamill on the other hand, was.

And hes not going to set fire to Gibbs at the first opportunity is he ??

I didn't like them hitting him while he ran off, but there's nothing in the rules to say you cant bump your opponent while he is on the field.

Didn't he get reported for unduly rough conduct, or something similar?

It's one thing to target a player who returns to the field after injury. By returning to the field they are effectively declaring themselves fit, which makes them a fair target. It's entirely another to target a player who is leaving the field in the hands of the trainers - that's poor sportsmanship, and possibly dangerous given the possibility of worsening the injury.

I seem to recall Riewoldt had broken his collarbone diving for a mark.

He was staggering around clutching at it for a bit, and while doing that the Brisbane players were banging into him. Then he went off.

Definitely poor sportsmanship, skirting the rules, although not sure what was written down at the time about messing with injuried players.

It was... Mal Michael right? He got reported and also got off I recall. I think it was also the same game where Reiwoldt was on the bench very distressed after the doctor diagnosed the break. Round 1 I recall - and out with a 6 week injury.

Scott brothers both got into him as he was heading towards the boundary line too.

Haven't they already said that $3m a year in less funding will be coming to the clubs?
