Adelaide Crows star Brad Crouch says “players are worried” and he knows of players who will “struggle to pay their mortgages” when pay cuts hit.

Brad has told the FIVEaa sports show:

“There are definitely players out there that I think won’t be able to pay their mortgages… when you buy a house you think your deal’s set in stone. I know players that have bought houses recently that are pretty highly geared up in terms of how much they’ve borrowed and they’ll struggle to pay their mortgages, which is just the reality.
“There’s obviously people like that all over Australia.
“Players are really worried. There a lot of young players that that hurts a lot. The tough thing that’s happening to players is nothing from our pay so far has been cut but then in the next five months or six months then it all gets cut off that every month, so it’s not spread out over 12 months... it makes it hard on people who have got a lot of expenses.”

Footballers really just need to keep their gobs shut at the moment, other than to say, we are thankful to have an opportunity to play football for a living full time and feel for those struggling to make ends meet and doing it tough.

He opened the interview by answering a question about what he's been up to lately with, "Not a helluva lot, been playing golf and bumming around the house."
Doesn't really sound like a stressful time for footballers.

Today the deal was made, 50% pay cut for 2 months, rising to 70% if no more games are played.
If approximately 50% of wages have already been paid, then players will get approximately 68% of their yearly contract.
For every $100k of a contract
50k paid already
8.3k in April to May
10k to end of Sept
= $68.3k approx payment if no more football played in 2020.

They can apply for a mortgage suspension from banks like anyone else. Most banks have said they'll stop payment for 6 months if needed.
Apparently just suspending the principal but still have to pay the interest. I only ever get IO loans so I’m not expecting any relief.

Would be interesting to know if the Crows tabled an offer to Brad before the Coronavirus pandemic and how much he turned down at the time, must be kicking himself in this time of uncertainty.

With that said, the Crows have payed him well considering his injury issues in the past.

I hope and Im sure posters realise that many AFL players have very few expenses and get a lot of freebies as a "perk". If they have "blown" their money away and not saved appropriately, some of them have only themselves to blame.

This popped on Fox Sport. Not particularly any in depth analysis. Does anyone know if the club has paid off its debt to the AFL? The article mentions that Port still owe the AFL $7M

I had to eventually sell 2 investment properties after the oil price crash in 2014. Post GFC I was only picking up contract work and struggled to hang on to them for 6 years. The oil price crash was the final straw.

No work, and no foreseeable work for at least 12-18 months.

There wasn’t much sympathy for me or people like me at the time.

I feel for the players and their futures, but sometimes “sh*t happens”

The difference is that I was in my late 40’s at the time. These players have far more of their working lives left to recover

That’s me and the missus now.

well AFL caved big time.

Really dissapointing.

Always on the cards with Gill matching their sacrifice.

Not sure what working lives some of them have,it’s been just football

They could get truck licenses and turn there hand to logistics/delivery. Perhaps try working as labourers in construction. At some level you’d expect some the older players would’ve been planning for the retirements and careers afterwards

If there is no football they need to cut their loses and move on. Roll with the punches like the rest of the community

Yeah, people are kind of missing the point that most of these guys really have at best 10 years to make hay whilst the sun shines. They often have little to no saleable skills after that, outside of the lucky few that get coaching / media gigs.

Why then should they accept less money than they're contractually entitled?

Life’s not fair. Sometimes shit things happen to great people. However I don’t resent them trying to get the best deal possible for themselves

Thought they were doing a bit more these days. Study, summer internships and the like. Even so, even a bad career is mostly at worst 2 years at about $70k as a 19/20 year old before having to return to the real world. I wouldn’t think it’s an impediment to having a successful working life post professional footy.

Its disappointing that the players that have bought our Club and its supporters the most joy (97 and 98 flags) were paid no way near to players that have been a part our failed attempts to win a flag. IIRC some even had genuine part time jobs during the 90s. Liptak was a doctor and had a part time job as a player. :$

I guess what I am saying is even taking inflation into consideration, the remuneration players get today is a far cry to players of yesteryear that have achieved so much.

No disrespect, but that's a ridiculously dumb comment.

These aren't new drugs. We understand what they do to the body. We don't know what they do to the virus.

And never has there been an illness met with such a simultaneous international show of resources. They're not going to get tied up in incessant bureaucracy.
Who's suggesting incessant bureaucracy?

I'm saying they will do all the relevant safety testing before going to full scale immunisation.

Do you disagree?

I think the last sentence is the key bit really, and given that we don't disagree.

I'm not crying for them, there are plenty worse off- but still- people seem to think they have some moral requirement to sacrifice here for reasons that are ill defined.

sorry, didn’t finish that post. We’re not there yet, but looking like we might need to rent the cottage out to a proper tenant. Just when we moved from bloody Alice and are an easy 5 hour drive away. As long as they’re rented we’ll be ok, tightened belts these days though. Even before the virus.

I don’t know what is written into their contracts?

Draw reasonable inferences. Did the AFL wage a PR campaign trying to strong arm them into taking less money because they could insist upon it as a matter of right?

I tend to agree with Sanders comment that the AFL should/should’ve been transparent with AFLPA and explained their financial position and plan going forward.

Clearly not the entire player group, however a few select members who could report back and allow an informed decision on their stance to be made.

The appearance via the media was that a strategy to try and shame the players into submission commenced. That was pretty shit

I wouldn't have minded the players getting their contracts paid out in full this year, the AFL going broke and no more AFL.

A new comp then starts with 2 teams from each state on reduced wages and the players of today known for their greed
