Hang on, a Richmond player is allowed to accept funds from Gofundme to supplement his salary and that is acceptable in terms of Salary Cap and outside income.

Is this legit?

Would set quite the precedent wouldn't it?

It feel "good", feels "right", absolutely nothing at all to see here and nothing will ever come from it is my bet.

Also from the article "Richmond have been trying to source money for him"

"Richmond's attempts to source money for Pickett have run into difficulties because earnings have to be independent of the club to avoid being counted in the club's salary cap."

I'm looking forward to the findings from the AFLs investigation into this...

Nope, again, nothing to see here.

Instead he'll end up being an ambassador of the game or something.

Maybe we all take our refunds and put them into a Supporting The Players (we like and want to attract to the club) fund raiser.

Isn't that we were busted for?

We told Tippett any shortfall in his salary would get topped up by sponsors (Balfours) and sit outside the salary cap.
I don't know if there were any dodgy salary happenings with the Tipp but we got punished because:

... it was having it written in Tiprat's contract that we would trade him to another Club for a second draft (SEE...), which is unders - and unfair to all other Clubs.

[from an old post of mine]

Pickett should create a company called Pickett Inc and sell the rights to any further photos, stories, etc over to his new company. Then the company can on-sell those rights to Richmond for $200k and that would be outside the cap

Not that anyone would do that

i think Essendon already tried that with hird and Lloyd and their named URL. The AFL is incompetent and corrupt, but it’s not stupid.

Except Tippet couldn’t be ****ed following up on some leads he was given. The club had promised him the extra payments, so his manager pushed the club into topping up his pay. It was more than just Balfours. His payments were topped up outside the salary cap, although his extra payments wouldn’t have exceeded the TTP.

Plus the agreement to trade him for a second round pick if he chose to leave (draft tampering)

I still can't work out how that is draft tampering.

The AFC thought that was his value, what's wrong with putting that into a contract?

If Richmond have been trying to source money places, that's reported and someone decides to give him extras, is that effectively driven through the club and should be in the TPP?

It's like the AFC putting an ad in the paper asking people to donate $1m to Brodie Grundy. He gets it from a rich supporter who isn't a sponsor and he moves to the crows with only $600k in the TPP. Do you think Eddie AFL would allow that? 😅

Trigg and co were convinced if he decided to leave it would be to go to the Gold Coast. Or at a stretch Brisbane.

Giving Sydney a massive leg up at that point in time would’ve pissed off a lot of clubs. Most of the Victorian clubs were lobbying hard to have Sydney’s COLA payments revoked.

Tippett was coming into his prime. And decent KPF who could actually ruck were like rocking shit.

I never understood why it was in the Crows interest to trade him for a 2nd round pick and put it in writing -

Say the Crows never got caught, what benefit would have that clause brought to the club?
They were that desperate to hang onto him, at least for the length of the contract.

It wasn’t written into to his contract, the AFL hold all player contracts and never would’ve approved it. This is where the infamous email came in

How.come players nominating a club they want to go to.during the Draft Period is not considered draft tampering?

The player has limited the scope of draft.picks that can be procured for.his movement, thus tampered with the draft order. Instead of letting the uncovered forces.of negotiation between two clubs.determine the outcome and thus draft order.

The benefit was having him sign the contract initially.

You can't do that anymore, Wayne

Sad situation for him, but A) He can blame his own union for it and b) He's still much better off than thousands of other people in the country
His union is paying him additional cash from a player welfare fund.

His union serves its members. There doesn't seem to be a massive outcry from players. Admittedly, every flog with a mobile has been attacking the players, so they probably don't want to say much publicly.

Tippett was one of the prime players being chased by GCS. The second round pick is the compensation we would have received.

The perverse logic was - stay with us, and if you change your mind in the future, we won't get in the way and would only want what we could get now.

I guess because you can't trade a player somewhere he doesn't want to go, so him saying the only thing he'd agree to just makes things quicker

In 2009 we thought we were on the cusp of a premiership- our late season surge was remarkable, and we only just fell short in the semi. Tippett was one of the leagues best players, it seemed- absolutely dominating at times as a contested marking beast.

Of course, it was a mirage. The old guard had used all of the miles left, and were never the same again and the new school- guys like Vince, Mackay, and perhaps most significantly Chris Knights (watch the second half of that season- he was absolutely elite- his goal kicking range playing as a roaming half forward was a massive part of the success that we enjoyed- he was a genuine weapon, and changed how teams could play against us. He was capable of kicking a winning score, so you couldn't ignore him, and his range meant that teams could not just flood the 50 and sit on Tippett- who when he was on had the physical attributes to make stopping him 1v1 almost impossible) never met that level again.

The fact players have a choice in where they go tampers the draft.

It limits the pool of draft picks he can be traded for. Which in turn affects the draft outcome.

It wasn’t actually in the contract. It was a side deal which I guess isn’t allowed. It’s hard to know how much of our penalty was tied to that. Diverting Balfours sponsorship to Tippett with an evidence trail including instructions to not let the AFL know would likely have contributed more to our penalty.

... for a Victorian club player.

Imagine if we did this for Brad Crouch how the Victorian journalists would respond...

Or it's like Visy & Judd all over again.

Sure.

But I imagine in our country, laws around restraint of trade would be given priority over a sport's rules around fairness.
