Anyone who has been questioning spending $$$ on getting Brad Crouch as a free agent didnt watch yesterdays game. Our midfield was third rate compared to Collingwood and they still have Treloar to come back in. Look at Collingwoods defence any of Maynard, Cripps or Noble would go through the midfield in our side.

We desperately need to find a number of quality mids at the draft - as we have been suggesting for the past 12 years. Midfield win flags its as simple as that and like Collingwood you turn your over laps into high quality flankers and pockets.

We'll do it. They're looking to buy themselves out of a hole. It rarely works for obvious reasons.

Crouch would be ideal as we'd still have a first round draft pick to take another mid with.

Not sure our cap space is as big as it was though. Hopefully we've front loaded Hanners contract.

The only mids we have drafted in the current set up are Dunstan, Gresh, Byrnes and Bytel. The rest seem to be half backs that we hope can become mids. Clark and Coffield both had time on ball but played back in TAC games. I don't know who directed the strategy but it's always seemed like a weird one. GWS have Greene, Green, Taranto, Caldwell, Coniglio, De Boer, Hately, Hopper, Kelly, Perryman, Ward and several others like Williams who can play there also.

Spot on.

Trout tried to beef up that area with koby stevens to go with armo and stuv. With acres, ross and dunstan the developing types.

Tbh that's a better shot at it than what we are getting under gags right now. Hes taken a completely different approach of focusing on what you can get now which means addressing the outside with hill and hanners. Jones is really the only one and he's more what stuv was for us albeit not as good.

If we are going to fight back up to a flag we need to be prepared to take risk and make hard calls.

We have to give up something good to get something good.

Id be looking at trading ross and billings in the one off season or the next. Billings should get us something good. Ross not as much but still something. Trade ross first.

Hanners and ross play very similar type of footy. Clark along the same lines but more refined in his disposal. So clark is coming for one of their spots which is more an outside type mid who can play inside at a pinch.

Billings just hasn't cut it on the wing and his a half forward type pushing up. Clubs will want him. We should get something good for him.

What we need to do is turn billings and ross into A grade inside mids.

Trading Billings would be stupidity. Luckily, it won't happen.

Billings, along with Marshall was our best player last year so I'm not sure how anyone can say he hasn't cut it on the wing.

I didn't hear anyone mentioned him being traded last week when he had 3 and 25.

Quality wing/half forwards are as important as anyone. He'd go into a quality side and be an absolute gun.

For a start jack billings wasn't our best player. He wasn't even our best mid. He didn't make the top 3 in the best and fairest.

Hes also not playing wing. Hes been pushed out by hanners and hill. Who are far superior in those positions.

Also there's no use having a gun winger or half forward if you dont have the engine to push the side forward.

Theyre the icing on the cake but they do have currency for sides who have an engine. If we can turn billings into a new gun inside mid i think everyone would be stoked with the trade.

Hes reminding me more and more of what delidio was for richmond.

Not sure trading away very good players improves you. Billings is perfect if you are a good side. We aren’t yet But why would you go and get hill but trade billings. Just plain silly.

Hanners far superior to billings. Seriously. Even hill isn’t and billings is playing wing as well as half forward.

Firstly, I'm not fussed on where he actually finished in the best and fairest, the fact Ross won shows it proves nothing. Surely you dont believe he is our best player? Most had Billings or Marshall winning.

Secondly, Billings has been rotating through the wing and half forward which is ideal for him.

And to suggest Hannebery is currently a far superior wingman then Billings is laughable.

And the reason we see Billings pushed forward more is because he's damaging down there, not because he can't get a kick on the wing.

yeah i would because i think Hill is a superior wingman to Billings and i'm hoping Billings would get us an A grade inside mid. the net result would be a massive improvement.

I’m not getting rid of anyone because we have Hanners.
He’s five minutes away from another breakdown - don’t trust his body just yet.

Well hill hasn’t showed that yet working with ordinary midfield. Billings has. To me it’s bloody stupid getting rid of a player probably equal to one you just played a fortune for.

Let's wait till we see what Bytel and Byrnes look like.
Like it or not, the club has reset the build around Max, so we have a year or two up our sleeves.

IMO we'll have Jones, Hunter, Bytel, Byrnes and Steele, and the money is on Bytel to become that high possession monster we need. Keep the big money for propper stars, and Crouch ain't one of'm..

Left field idea. We take over Rory Sloan's contract for a few more years and get them to pay 50%. He's signed for 5 so must have 3 or 4 left. Pay him the bulk up front and then owe nothing in the last 2 and delist him if he break down. Gets us another gun for the transition period while we develop some youth.

Big named midfielders (who) come with huge trade costs eg Hill and we dont have that currency next year. If we can get Crouch without giving up a draft pick then we would be crazy not too IMO! Save the draft pick for a top 10 kid of the future.

I agree we still have Jones & Hunter who are under developed an unproven as mids and may become stars. Steele IMO has reached his ceiling (tagger) & Byrnes & Bytel havent played a game, so surely the more quality we have on our list the better.

Not so crazy an idea G but we’ve invested in Hanners so we won’t want too many old stagers

Could work but depends on a post covid salary cap in 2021.

We've been unlucky with the fall of the drafts though too.
Clavarino was the last real clanger where we could have got a mid ( Worple Constable )

2017: The highly rated mids went early of course. Raynor, Brayshaw, Dow ,Cerra.
Most of them wouldn't be safe amongst you lot if we'd got them.
Who should we have drafted instead of Clark and Coff? O-Brian? Brandar? Ling? and yes i remember you all getting a BONAR.
( Tim Kelly , well yeah ).

2018: Should we not have drafted King? Bytel was our second pick. Was pretty happy with it , though i'd love to hear that he's burning down the track at training.

2019: We traded our guts out to get Hill. We also got Howard and Butler , and i can't complain about that, and Jones, to use in the midfield. Then we managed to pick up Byrnes as a late 3rd.

Its a juggling act, we need mids, we should draft mids, unless the best available is clearly better than the next best mid.
I'm pretty happy that Clark will be a better mid than Lochie O'Brian or Jarrod Brandar.

We DO have the currency! !
