If Taranto gets done I recon it will be two firsts plus Carlisle. Maybe something late back. Will need to pay overs and I’d be happy if we did.

That would be the most ever paid for a player. I think 2 firsts with a second back is the usual for a contracted young top end player. GWS will have a heap of firsts again and probably wouldn't even want to use later picks, they'd pretty happily hand over those.

Draft picks are and will always be overrated.

have a look at some of the picks we have used in the past 5 years Mccartin (pick 1) Dunstan (16 odd) Acres (18 odd) Goddard (20 odd) McKenzie (25 odd). Most often that not, they don't work out as well as they should.

Give me a proven player any day of the week especially one that has 10 plus years of football in him.

it's a different story if we are using our first round picks constantly on players 26 or over.

This kid is 1 year older than Clark and Coffield.. so let that sink in before we jump up and down.

I love Gresham but Taranto is better than him as pure mid. I agree that we'd be better with both. To me Gresham's ideal role is Robbie Grey or De Goey style forward mid. I'm more trying to work out how we think we'd get the deal done. We must be giving up something.

Agree with Gres, can go through the guts but comparisions to Grey De Goey on game style is not without merit.

So we all agree we do anything to get a Taranto re picks.

What about players? I would be loathe to give up either but Gres or Billings could be bait.

The team doesn't get better by trading their better players. Out of the two I think we could cover Billings easier. I can see Josh battle on the wing amd just feel Gres gives us a bit more.

Like I said would be loathe to trade either, but we don't get a player like Taranto without giving things we don't want to.

The second rounder coming back seems to be more so when they are uncontracted. I reckon we'd be giving up two first rounders and not getting anything back for a contracted Taranto.

At 22, I think he's definitely worth it. Two first rounders for a 26 year old I'd be hesitant to do, but for someone who we'll get 10 years out of, I'd do it every day. Two picks in their teens could turn out to be two misses. Could turn out to be two guns, but the odds aren't high. Taranto is as close to a 10 year sure thing to be a gun.
We having being screaming for a big fish mid and now people don't want to pay up 2 x first rounders
this trade we make us the best team in the competition for many years to come.

Our reported offer of $600k x 5 was reported in the media. Doesn’t mean it was accurate but assuming Jye decided to stay a reasonable assumption would be that the GWS offer was better than that.
One would take that with a grain of salt, seeing as it would supposedly place Mr Caldwell on a higher income than our Mr Steele.
Does anyone think a 16 gamer would be offered more than our best player and future captain?
Seems odd to me.

If TT was the target it might make sense, however trying to blow out another club's salary cap is a game of roulette that's far more appealing to BF nuffies than real world practical.

At least we're stirring things up again, but I'll wait till the club announcements before getting excited.
This trade thread becomes a nut house every September. .

The more I think about it the me a likely we'd be to get a 2nd back and probably rightfully so.

The giants gave 3 and 16 just to move up the order one spot to take him, that was after already giving up good picks to get in that situation.

In just about any draft you'd happily give up two late 1st rounders to get pick 2.

I don't know about best team in the comp! It would be huge for the list though. Would make our team so well balanced and be ready for a shot at top four. Fingers crossed.

The industry rumour is that it is very frosty between Cogniglio and Taranto.

would cost every bit of currency we have and leave us with nothing at draft time for 2 years.

There can be only one Italian Stallion at the club. We would be doing a public service taking the Tarantula off their hands.

We have a young side with massive up side , Taranto is the Fyfe or Dangerfield to top us off - the kid won the F and B at 21 - and was by far there best player in the finals.

There’s ways around it. And you’re getting perhaps the best young mid in the comp.
Or, we could try our luck and grab the next Paddy McCartin and Jack Watts

Yeah, I'm not a fan of trading out of the front end of drafts but if you are getting a star quality player at a young age it's like paying up to not get it wrong. I hate irresponsible over-paying for players, this is the opposite to that. It's getting a guaranteed top shelf player with 10 years of footy left.

It just doesn't seem to be the going rate for any player. Collingwood set the price with Adams and Treloar and that was considered a huge amount to pay then. Since then that's seen as the standard. I think last year we saw trade values going the other way. Good players are going a lot cheaper now.

Cutting list sizes and more movement of contracted players will adjust expectations back down IMO. Clubs seem more willing to trade. GWS look like they need a big refresh, perhaps they'll look at the list and see what they can do to make it a more balanced set up.

I'm quite confident they moved up to pick 2 to take Andrew McGrath who they saw as a ready made back man to help their already contending side.

They also saw him as a leader, the assumption at that stage was McCluggage at #1 to Essendon. Obviously that didn't pan out.

This makes so much more sense than Caldwell. Taranto being in the AFL system for 4 years, played finals and bigger bodied. Love it! Nothing against Caldwell but he wouldn’t be bolstering our midfield stocks he’d be a developing player like Bytel and Byrnes.
Hope we can get it done! We are a club to be these days. [emoji1433][emoji1433]

Would allow players like Byrnes, Bytel, and even Gresh to develop under Steele, Jones, Hanners, and Taranto - providing Byrnes and Bytel continue to come on.

Im with you , if we had to give one of Billings or Gesh it would be Billings every day of the week , has not lived up to his draft number IMO

Already on their way fellas.

(Definitely not an old photo)
This is only my opinion. But I would trade the future for Caldwell and Taranto.
Take our firsts and seconds.

trade Carlisle and Lonie

try bring in Ben Brown for Carlisle.
Job done.
Got to the draft with 4th and 5th rounders for all I care.
