He was an u18 All Australian so he must have played some good football to warrant being drafting.
He co/captained vic metro too IIRC.

He was a very good intercepting defender when they were all the rage, but skinny and not particularly athletic.
Couldn't body and wasn't fast, but read the play well and marked well.

He was also a big slider that year, and not that l have any evidence, but maybe it was for a reason.
Perhaps a bit of the Charlie Constables about it.

When interviewed, Trout bristled and l still just have the feeling it might have been his pick.

Has similar trates to Carlisle, so l hope to god there's a smooth succession gonna happen, but we're all obviously none the wiser ATM.

I know Risky is still on the bandwagon, but l can't recall a positive review from any other Sandy watcher..

The question is, if Caldwell is as good as done to us... what do we give?

Maybe our 2020 FRDP and get a later pick back perhaps a second rounder. I reckon GWS will play hard ball if they wanted to hold on to him. A future second would be ideal for us.

They have stuff all picks this year from memory, I'd hope we push for this year's first and maybe next year's third for Caldwell and a second rounder from either year.

14 will turn into 16 or 17 after free agency.

I think we'd be getting our hopes expecting anything close to a 2nd back.

Can't see a 2nd, but a 3rd is reasonable.

Pundits seem to think only about 50 kids will be drafted, so there will be little difference between a 3rd or a 4th should you wish to use it for drafting.

Posters from Essendon, the Scum and the Dogs seem to think Dunny and Lonie are worth a 2nd with a 3rd back.
So in mind we lose the FRDP, then roll the 3rd in with Dunny/Lonie for a 2nd.

Not a bad outcome.
1st + Dunny/Lonie
=
2nd + Caldwell

I'd be trying hard to dig Bobby Hill out too, and I'd be prepared to sacrifice Lonie to do it.
But, Bobby has 2 more years IIRC, so a 2 year deal for Lone Dog is more likely.

I reckon we try our luck and split our pick with a club like the crows who have two 2nd round picks.

We give pick 15 + Dunstan for pick 20 & 30. We might need to add a sweetener to that deal. In turn we try to push pick 30 to GWS for Caldwell. Could live with giving up pick 20 and taking 30 to the draft.

The latter would even be borderline cheating. Do it!

I wonder what the long term plan is with Bytel. Adding Caldwell to our midfield group doesn't give a hell of a lot of opportunity to Jack but surely we try and sign him up fairly soon.
I'm not so concerned about Bytel, I expect more pushing of mids to small forwards, Gresh, Billings and Hanners, to push Sinclair, Kent and Lonie potentially out of best 22.

Caldwell, Bytel and Byrnes plus one more mid for depth and genuine selection pressure.

To add to this trade I'd look at giving crows our 2021 2nd for their 2021 3rd round pick.

As we will be premiers and crows receive another spoon, will push our pick back by 1 😉. Seriously I'd look at this swap. Back ourselves next year.

He's not established yet but contract length and value might override that. usually players lose value until they are genuinely best 22. They aren't a struggling club with hardly any young stars either. They get top kids cheap every year and can't fit them all.

I would seriously look at Higgins, but Gags and Gubby will have a Doogs or Butler up their sleeves.

I reckon the stats guy we got from the Hawks is the money ball man. Howard, Jones and Butler are all stats that matter types.
