I missed Ratt's talking about a key forward. I did hear a lot of him mentioning how cr@p our clearance work was, pretty obvious nod to the area of improvement.

He said we will bring in a few players. Without quoting him verbatim two of those will be a mid (not saying that he said it would only be one mid) and a forward to take the load of King for a few years as he develops. That means a key forward as medium forwards are not gong to cut it, plus we already have Membrey and Battle.

So that very much sounds to me like Ben Brown as Cameron seems likely to be GWS or Cats in 2020.

I'm not convinced Ben Brown is the answer, just my opinion

I reckon we're very close to getting there next year. If we can fill the holes that Ratts was alluding to in our list and get one more good year out of Ryder to help our clearance dominance, you just never know.

Ryder exceeded all my expectations, and I reckon given how he played that they will even more concentrate on his fitness in 2021. Ryder is clearly good enough to be good for us in 2021, but we need to not play him every week to manage him.

Mmm.... I'd rather find another Marshall in the local leagues, a real footballer with skill and mongrel. Brown just seems soft as butter, delicate. Admittedly I can't stand watching the Roos, but that's my perception of him.

Again being Devil's advocate they want someone to take the load of King the next couple of years. That means someone who is ready to play Round 1 2021.

I doubt that such a player exists in the local leagues.

Given we need to trade in talent, already have no second or third rounders if we get trade offers for Lonie and Savage are they both gone?

Savage would be the easy one. While good tonight, he will not regular 22 next year.

Lonie the debatable one. He is a pretty good footballer, but lacks pace and is very small and so I see against good teams that he will continue to struggle.

If we gain a mid or two then I see that Gresh can rotate between small forward duties and the midfield, with Butler the main small forward and mids supporting both.

So given our lack of trade capital if there is a decent pick on offer for Lonie would the club take it?

I am not convinced either, but how many available key forwards are there that would have our opponents sending there No 1 back to?
Brown is criminally underrated on here, mainly because he looks a bit funny and can be clumsy with the ball below his knees.

The facts are, he kicked over 60 goals 3 years running before this year. Only very, very good players pull that off in modern-day footy being the main man in a team dealing with multiple defenders and zones.

This year, he had to put up with a horrible personal tragedy and dealt with an absolute rabble of a team delivering the ball to him as well as injury. If you don't give him a pass for that, you've got no idea in my opinion.

The thing I like about him as a forward complementing King is that he is a leading type: he won't be calling for us to kick the ball on top of his head: that's not his thing. He will drag one or two defenders away from the goal square where Max can be one-out or we will hit him (Brown) up on a lead. The last sort of big forward we need is someone too similar to Max.

Brown fits the bill for us and he'll be at a bargain-basement price for a very good player. While it seems a lot of fans have a set against him, I'd be very surprised if our recruiters didn't see him as a great option for us at a fantastic price.

Yes, as I have said I really do not see who else is available who is gettable and affordable given our trade assets who would fit the bill.

Well you've won me over, I'll take your word for it :thumbsu:

I don’t know why but I have a feeling that we either seriously considered or are considering a Brown + Higgins combo of prime/veteran, ala Howard/Ryder last year.

But if we get our hands on another midfielder besides Caldwell I think our interest in Higgins definitely drops off.

Slowly coming around to the idea of Brown. It’ll still be a few years at least before King starts tearing games apart on his own. Brown is a different type of forward and would provide some nice support.

I’d like Battle to play more key forward but he is so versatile and is highly skilled so is very handy around the ground in non KPP posts. It’s an interesting dilemma we have in how to structure our side as it is, adding Brown would make it very interesting.

If we do get Brown, Caldwell etc how do we fit Battle etc in? Feels too tall as it is

Best 22 Round 1 2021:

Paton Howard Wilkie
Coffield Carlisle Long
Hill Steele Jones
Lonie Brown Billings
Butler King Membrey
Marshall Gresham Clark
Hannebery Ryder Ross Sinclair

Depth:
Battle Caldwell Geary Dunstan Byrnes Bytel Webster Kent Connelly Clavarino
Savage Hind Phillips Roberton Parker
Marsh Bell Joyce Langlands Austin etc

I know one that has not been mentioned...

Would we take Buddy as a salary dump?

Cameron to Sydney, then they dont need him. Helps King for a couple of years. Great mates with Roughy.

Either way, Ratts press conference has me in no doubt that we already have a key fwd and a mid lined up.

We need;
a forward/mid to replace Kent. (Gresham into Lonie’s spot. Lonie has his days but is to inconsistent and cannot even an aerial contest with his direst opponent).
a mid to replace Ross.
A key defender.
