Martin roving to English’s hit outs? That’s bizarre even for Bevo’s standards.

Question without notice.

IMO, eleven years ago we entered 2010 with the best team on paper we have ever assembled. We were actually premiership favourites going into round one.

As it turned out, we were clearly the fourth best team. There was almost a gulf between us and Collingwood (the eventual premiers).

Our midfield in 2010 was solid without being outstanding. Cooney, Griffen, Boyd, Cross, Ward, Picken, Addison probably saw the most midfield time.

My question is this:

Replace those seven mids with Bont, Macrae, Treloar, Libba, Smith, Dunkley, Hunter... Would that have been enough to beat Collingwood? Keep in mind, they smashed us three times that year, including a ten goal thumping in the QF (acknowledged we had Cooney and Morris out).

I am not a huge Hunter fan BUT I would have him ahead of Boyd (midfield version), Cross, Picken & Addison (Addison isn’t as good as Lipinski or young West!). Dunkley and Ward are similar.
Cooney & Griffin are the only ones of the 7 from 2010 I would put into a combined midfield team (at Smith & Hunters expense).

Our improved midfield would go a long way to overturning that 10 goal deficit. As Cooney didn’t play that game, 5-6 better midfielders than any on the ground, would make a side 10 goals better.

So just say everyone’s fit over the next few weeks, what would people have as our absolute best 22 for the rest of the season with everyone available to choose from? I’d go something along the lines of

Williams, Keath, Croz
Daniel, Gardner, Dale
Smith, Libba, Hunter
McLean, Naughty, JJ
English, Bruce, Weightman

Martin, Bont, Macrae

Dunks, Treloar, Doc, McNeil. It’s tough though that team really is stacked. Wood stiff but I think he’s just our 8th picked defender right now (better than Gards but he gets the nod being a tall) and I like the 7 set up, that’s perfectly balanced how it is. VDM would probably be in there too if fully fit but on form hasn’t been good, I suspect he’ll be better coming back fit though.

West, Lip, Wally, Hannan, Scott next in line and could all make a case, Richards in this group when fit. The next rung of Buku, Sweet, Garcia, JUH, Butler could all be pushing later In the year too but spots are obviously tight.

I'd go something like

Williams Keath Wood
Daniel Gardner Dale
Smith Dunkley Treloar
McNeil Naughton Hunter
Weightman Bruce English

Martin Bont Libba

Macrae Duryea Vandermeer Hannan

I thought Crozier's best game was his 3 quarters as the sub this week but I think Wood has been better this year. He feels more reliable and Crozier has been somewhat flat for a while. I had McLean out of the side in my predicted side all the way back in 2019 and although I thought he did well in the tagging role last year not a lot has changed in my opinion. Not in our best midfield, not damaging enough forward offensively or defensively. Talented and too good for depth but his position is probably better left to a role player like Hannan, or even Scott if it came down to it. Wood, Scott, McLean, Lipinski and Jong the next off the rack in that order imo. Super interesting how JUH fits into a fully fit forward line in the short-term future.

Best 22 (on talent alone)

B. Daniel, Keath, Crozier
HB. Dale, Naughton, Williams
C. B.Smith, Bont, Treloar
HF. Hunter, JUG, Dunkley
F. VDM, Bruce, English
Rucks. Martin, McCrae, Liberatore
Int. Wood, JJ, Mclean, Weightman
Emerg. Wallis, Richards, Duryea, Lipinski

Trying it for right now.

B: Daniel, Keath, Duryea
HB: Dale, Gardner/Young, Williams
C: Treloar, Libba, Hunter
HF: Bont, Naughton, English
F: Weightman, Bruce, Wallis
R: Martin, Macrae, Dunkley
I: JJ, Richards, Smith, McLean
Sub: Vandermeer
Other emergencies: Cordy, Lipinski, Crozier

Wallis and Vandermeer could easily be switched around depending on what we need

Looks about right. Small thing but I'd have Bont start on-ball and move Dunkley to the bench with McLean or JJ on the HFF.

Pretty strong team.

Garcia I would play ahead of Wallis. In the starting lineup, I would swap Bont to on ball, Macrae to wing, Treloar to HFF & JJ to FP (Wallis replaced by Garcia on the bench).
Sub: VDM is a good call.

For mine that defence is a little light on for size/aerial power. I'd bring in Cordy (or Crozier if we pick the team on best form), move Daniel or Duryea to the bench and regretfully leave out Wallis.

This looks pretty close to me, barring injury though I expect Cordy will definitely be in, and one of Gardner/Young to play the 3rd tall role.

If 100% fit, Crozier is absolutely in our best team.
I tend to agree but just don't know how many of those medium defenders we can play, particularly if we go for a proper KPD structure. When fit, Williams, Duryea and Wood have all easily outperformed Croz this season, which has been well down from his usual standards. There has to be a point where he can't be considered in the side in his current form.

Based on who could be available come Sept and excluding Treloar at this stage

FB: Crozier Keath Dureya
HB: Dale Cordy Williams
C: Hunter Liberatore B.Smith
HF: Mclean Naughton Johannisen
FF: Weightman Bruce English
RUC: Martin Bontempelli Macrae
INT: Daniel, Dunkley, Richards, Scott
MS: Wallis

Pretty good team - would probably only replace Scott with VDM or even Young - if he can produce a few similar games as last week. Lets us rotate talls and or cover for an injury.

Dureya - <Tarrant> or Keath - Williams
Daniel - <Keath> or Young - Dale
Hunter - Liberatore - Richards
McLean - Naughton - Bontempelli
English - Bruce - Weightman

<**Trade**> - Macrae - Dunkley

Smith - Crozier - Treloar - JUH

Em: Scott - VDM - Cordy - JJ -
Martin (will be player/coach)
