Problem is both Pedlar and Schoenberg are 182cm players ...and Oliver and Petracca 187cm and 186cm respectively ...that's a big weight/strength differential that was obvious last night

Don't think the Cripps big bodied mid works, as he lacks the legspeed .....Bont is a great example, where he can still break-away with his size

Oliver two years ago was 2:1 handball / kicks ....and was not damaging at all, despite getting the ball easily ....this year in particular, he's reversed the ratio and using speed and then kicking ....what a difference that's made to his game

Seems most of the junior mids handball too much or dink the ball 20-30 mtrs 🤨
The positive news is Nick's absolutely sees and recognises this need. He's openly said we need power and speed in the midfield.

Looking at the GF last night, it reinforced the importance of speed & power thru the midfield

Look at the most influential players from both sides ......Petracca / Oliver & Bont / Treloar ....pace & power to break away from packs, either using legspeed or strength

Players like Macrae who dinked the ball around & played his usual game, was good .....but he was not your game winner

So who are our players that potentially meet the game winning criteria ? ......IMO Schoenberg & Pedlar

Players who run & carry ...kick long ...and kick goals as mids ..they win games, finals games !
We need to develop Milera into that player

Reckon we need to finish bottom 4 next year as well. We just don't have enough top picks in our midfield.

The good news though is we judged Luke Pedlar to effectively be the 5th best midfielder in that draft so hopefully he comes good. Still need more talent though

Given that two SA kids are coming out of contract next year, it opens a lot of doors too via PSD.

With potentially first "COVID Free" season, it wouldnt be a bad time to finish in the bottom 4 and complete our rebuild with early picks again.

Probably also potentially lead to the final years of Tex and Sloane too.

Oliver is hardly tall. I would think Schoenberg could be physically very comparable, once he's fully developed.

Hobbs seems like a real power mid in this draft - though some of the taller athletic mids may develop like that as well.

He aint just walking there.

If push comes to shove, Richmond can just trade CCJ to another club, and North Melbourne can again try to look for another 200 cm forward/ruck. Also as he is a restricted free agent, Richmond can simply match any offer North make in the PSD.
Geezuz..

Can they?

North could offer a contract that would take the Tigers cap to the brink given the stars on the list.

Pedlar really is key to our fortunes

If he can develop into that bull, game-breaking midfielder that can push forward (which he can IMO, given his base traits), we’ll be in a great spot. He’s no certainty to get there yet, though, and if he does, I feel like it’ll take him longer than we expect to get there (a la Petracca, 6 or so years)

Schoenberg looks like he’s on his way to ‘great mid’ territory. Pedlar is less certain, but if he can, they’ll make for a nice duo

I disagree. The key to our fortunes is Thilthorpe just due to how ridiculously talented he is, and how game altering it can be to have a dominant CHF. He reaches his ceiling, plus we have a capable, and well coached squad built around him and we jag a premiership (or more) in the next decade.

Midfield wise, Schoenberg and Pedlar certainly stand out as a 1-2 punch at the moment. Berry could also be a wildcard here seeing how well he handled his first year as is Cook if adding another 5-7 kg to his frame, more confidence and fitness steps up his inside game. Certainly needs more and I'm on the Draper train if we can't get Horne.

Thilthorpe is obviously part of it too, if he develops into a generational key forward then we can pretty much build our setup around him, which is a great luxury to have

That said, how we build our midfield is just as important as how we build our forward line. Pedlar and Schoenberg coming on is pretty vital to making our midfield finals-competitive

Jordan Dawson? I readily have no feel on how good he is. But is a big bodied midfielder if we plan on playing him in the midfield
Probably lacks the physicality of a Bont .....but has many of the other attributes; marking, long penetrating kick ....which is why I hope we use him thru the midfield

Need to put more muscle on him though

Yeah agreed, was thinking very similar and it makes the development of Schoenberg and Pedlar quite important as both have this capacity.

But its also what we need to be looking at in the draft, Horne fits the bill but I just can’t see us getting pick 1 off the Roos without selling the farm and then some. Erasmus seems to fit the bill as well, powerful, strong overhead and a natural goal kicker.
Josh Goater!

Local lad James Willis outside of JH-F is the SA mid with the burst speed and power from the contest.
Also finds the goals regularly, not overly tall at around 181cm but powefully built and strong through the hips which sees him break tackles easily.

Totally agree

He moves well, great skills, seems to be a good decision maker and is a good runner.

He did play some midfield in 2020, hopefully this is something Nicks will explore

Deaneus! just a thought about including this link in your sticky at the top of each page on here.

Its the draft calculator and given this is our time to shine (as Carlton taught us), I thought it would be handy to have always on hand to work out points for draft picks.

CCJ isn't a free agent so Richmond has no say in where he chooses to ply his trade. CCJ has already told the playing group he will be at North next year and said his farewells so I'm not sure why Richmond is keeping up with this pretense. They made their decision when they recontracted Riewoldt over CCJ. If they had any brains they would have moved Riewoldt on who is done and gone with the young buck. So they basically forced his hand in leaving.

Olivers 187cm (88kg) .....Schoenberg 182cm (86kg) ..if you believe AFL website weights

You could be right re comparisons ....I compare Schoenberg to West Coasts Luke Shuey

Pedlar plays that real physical game :whitecheck: ......Berry, looks ATS as a "B" grade version of Pedlar, not quite the class, but a workhorse in the Liberatore mould

With Hobbs, isn't he just more of what we already have ? .....does Erasmus, Goater give us a better POD? ...both look to have a lot of upside

Not sure how many on here have watched Jordan Dawson play but if you're expecting him to come in and be a dominant midfielder you're going to be disappointed I think. Contested ball is not his strength, his abilities are best used outside of the contest just like the Swans have cottoned onto.
Jordan Dawson is tall at 192cm but he is definitely not big bodied, Nathan Fyfe is the same height and he's 10kg heavier, Christian Petracca is 6cm shorter and 10kg heavier, Lachie Neale is 15cm shorter and around the same weight.

I think everyone on here does 😂

It’s a good thing though, Shuey is a great player and can break a game open (see 2018 GF). If Schoenberg gets to that level (I think he will) it’s a great building block to have

That said, you need more than just a Shuey type in your midfield to win finals. It’d be great to find our own version of Yeo

Not disagreeing .....and I've seen every game Dawson has played

In 2020 he was used similarly to that chip scabbing Lloyd in DEF .....this year, his game did start to evolve with more contested ball, and his marking suddenly became a weapon, it hadn't in the previous years

I'd suggest SYD were also trying to add a more contested brand of footy to Dawsons game .....I mean he still hasn't played a lot of games up until the last 2 years .....so he's still developing, but we've got him at the right time

Yes .....Yeo and Steele developed, and weren't high Draft Picks ....Steele was a plodder at GWS & it's been amazing how he's transformed his game
