Or “we just need to get 50 games into him, then we should start seeing something”.

Someone that can play now, a really good midfielder with some speed that can f**king kick, it’s not that much to ask is it?

I just want the best midfielder in 5 years. I don't care in the slightest if they're ready day one.

Give up our soon to be captain and arguably the best player (considering age and ability) on our list.

Or…. we could just burn down the club and all start following curling.

What about "he's been on crutches most weeks since 14 but if we can get that right, he'll be a champ"

I‘m starting to suspect I have some sort of PTSD from our previous drafting

GWS absolutely laughing that they traded for Collingwood's 2021 first round pick

They’ll waste it but damn what a trade

Pick 3 and m crouch for pick 1. I'd take it and run.
Again with this trading for Matt Crouch..

Why would North even do that?

They can simply keep pick one and grab crouch as a free agent for nothing.

Trade scenarios involving matt crouch are just pointless.

Got significantly more aroused seeing our pick go from 7 => 5 after the weekend, than a pointless win would’ve been worth
You know, I posted just before the Carlton game that I wanted us to fight out the season and let the wins fall where they may.

I want to retract that statement.

I realised that I still could not care if we won or not ... our rebuild is heading in the right direction, we have young players with potential coming through AND old players that are holding us together that will fall away over the coming 12 months.

Then I checked what we had left for the rest of the season and saw how close we were to bottom spot.

Crows - Brisbane / Essendon / Eagles / Bulldogs / Hawks / Power / Melbourne / North

Cannot see a win in there before the last round.

Then I checked what our "combatants" had in store for the remainder of the season:

Pies - Tigers / Carlton / Power / Eagles / Hawks / Lions / Essendon
Gold Coast - GWS / Bulldogs / Melbourne / Lions / Carlton / Essendon / Sydney
Hawks - Dockers / Melbourne / Lions / Crows / Bulldogs / Tigers
North - Eagles / Essendon / Carlton / Cats / Tigers / Sydney / Crows

I think we have a real chance at 16th, especially if games get moved to Victoria, cannot see us catching the Suns and North in the bottom two spots without some divine intervention. The Suns would need to somehow win one (we should be cheering REALLY hard for them in their game against Carlton) and North might sneak a win before we see them in the last round.

Is there a chance that the last round could be another battle to lose and get that pick #1? All of our older players will be in surgery by then. Then if we manage to get to the bottom again - SURELY we are in line for a priority pick after finishing bottom two years in a row? Dream a little dream people :-)

The other option for Horne is to do a Jack Darling....I for one am happy to supply him with all the boozy he needs at schoolies....I mean, who would possibly want to draft an AFL player that gets drunk at the Victor Harbour caravan park?

I think this deal may have some legs but is dependent on whether or not North feel Dumont is on the way out as a FA. I've heard some things that suggest he may be looking to move back to SA & that we may be interested in him. A trade scenario for Crouch would mean North receives the maximum benefit of the FA compo for Trent, whilst only sliding a few spots in the draft but still ending up with one of the better Vic Kids (Sinn, Sonsie, Rachele)

Trading Crouch and our pick (currently 5) for Pick 1 would value Crouch at 78. We could even look to have a swap of seconds (24>20) to even things out a bit more. I wouldnt be all to fussed about this. All this under the proviso we are offering Dumont enough to net North a second-rounder in FA compo.

ADL Gain: Horne, Dumont
NM Gain: Crouch, Pick 5, AND another 2nd rounder as FA compo.

No it wouldn't value Crouch at 78, that just shows how garbage and exploitable the points system is.

and this also ignores the other big question..

why the hell would mcrouch want to go play for the wooden spooners?..

unless they pay him massive dollars, in which case, Adelaide would then be getting band 1 compo (so pick 6 under your scenario) and wouldnt want to trade in Dumont as a free agent and end up watering down the mcrouch compo..

theres just way too many holes in this mcrouch trade argument.

No logical reason for NM and Adel to trade for M Crouch.
They offer him peanuts and we match and then no trade.
NM go after big names without success then over pay guys like Polec so we may get lucky.
He might like Noble.

Our best hope would be if GC finished last.
Open up the check book for Rankine, Lukosius, Hollands and Horne and if none return at least their salary cap is completely screwed

Truthfully I think one of the best guys GC could recruit is Keays. The best Queenslander playing outside of Qld.
Next years 1st + Keays and whatever else it takes for pick 1 or 2.
Wont happen but they need to stop recruiting outside guys like Murdoch, Atkins, Ellis.

This is certainly shaping up as the time to strike for Rankine. GCS cap is screwed to the point they need to shed salary (from Cochrane a week ago), they want to add experienced players to make them more competitive, and Rankine is likely to have a well paying contract which they're getting relatively little out of at the moment.

That said, we have no business trying Keays at this point of time. Plus I doubt he has any interest in going to Gold Coast and in the end of the day, it's up to Keays.

Nope, the time to strike is when he's out of contract and he wants to only go to the Crows....and then he wants to show a whole lot more than he has thus far....we do not not need cameo performers that go missing for big stretches.

Are you for real...why on earth do we want another wooden spoon to hang around our necks forever??? I can guarantee you this, we finish last we get Horne and he 'might' help us to win a flag and he might not...but I guarantee you we will have that second wooden spoon forever

I disagree, the time to strike is when Rankine is likely to be at his cheapest. Depending on how bad GCS cap situation is (and Cochrane didn't make it sound like it was in a good place at all with his "we can't afford it this year" comment), it could easily be now. After all, they've signalled they want to get experienced players over as well which costs salary cap space, and they only way they're achieving it is by shedding players (and ones with big contracts, which undoubtedly Rankine has because they've already had to fight off interest from us and Port).

Really though, we midfielders and we need kids with high ceilings. We can wear a cameo (or multiple, really) player at the current time if they meet either (or both) criteria. After all, next year is likely a repeat of this year where we're just existing in the lower part of the table and just pumping games into our kids. A Rankine, or a Rowe really doesn't change much in that regard in the short term, and we really don't need it too. It could change a lot when we need it too, which is 3-5 years down the line.

Depending on how desperate they are, this could be doable for a 2nd round pick right now.

Would be surprised if North let the last game to be a battle for pick 1. Sure, they've won/drawn games already but let's wait for them to do that when they are a chance to climb off the bottom of the table to see how willing they are at letting go of pick 1.

The Hawks win was a pleasant surprise though.

Wouldn't be surprised if our players get up for a win or two in the remaining games if we don't get hit by injuries or their fitness fall off a cliff. Losing Sloane (while he may seem to not do much lately) could be a big factor.
