Whatever pick but he's top of my list as the difference maker in this draft that should be available to us, though I suspect he goes higher than most are predicting.

Our pick #4 seems to be in an awkward spot again but I think he has the tools to be a really good player.
He should complement our other midfielders pretty well

I wouldn't be all that shocked when people are talking Erasmus and Callaghan at that point, I think Goater stacks up exceptionally against those two personally and I cant see him as being in the pick 15 -20 range most have been predicting to this point.
Yeah I’m not sure why many seem to rate him around that mark, his unique profile is top 10 worthy to me. Maybe it’s due to his time spent at half back? (Although someone like Sinn is generally rated higher and he’s pretty much an attacking half back himself)

I reckon Callaghan and obviously Horne are very likely to go before our pick, and with there being just one more pick in between, I’d feel safe that Goater would make it to 4 (or 6, I guess). FWIW I’d be pleased if we were to take him there

You think Erasmus' field kicking is better?

Do we have any video of him?

Here's the full game in which Goater starred .....and my man Mac Andrew

Thanks. That's better than highlights. I'm sick of the number of times I've been seduced by highlights, while the cold light of day showed a reality nothing like them. ;) What colours and number is he, by the way?

Goater ...#24 for Vic Metro

Keays is that type, just doesn't have the finishing ability.

Those 2 you mentioned are certainly in that mould, might have to hit the FA market to find another and build a solid group of soldiers around them.

Helicopter punts forwards under no pressure don’t render you that type. Ever.

keays is b grade.. would be ridiculous to even mention his name in a conversation that includes Bont, Oliver or Petracca..

love keays’s endevour, gives it his all, seems a great club and team man.. but if he is still in our midfield, getting the same minutes he is now, in two years from now we’ll be nowhere near a GF..

Keays is more our Jack Viney type

He just goes to work and gets the job done, week in, week out

Although he may never be a Bont or Petrecca A+ type of midfielder, there is always a need for a Keays type playing through your midfield.....

1) we likely won't be playing in a grand final in two years anyway
2) Keays is probably best as a 3rd or 4th best mid rather than our 2nd best, but to say that he can't be part of a GF team is ludicrous. He'd easily be Melbourne's 3rd best pure midfielder right now

Yep, every team needs a great defensive mid. Keays has more strings to his bow than a Viney or Willem Drew type as well, which is a bonus

Keays is tough inside the contest, he can do a defensive job but he can also hurt the opposition the other way

Every midfield unit needs a Keays, a blue collar mid that gets the job done week in, week out

Given our draft hand if we cannot really get someone outrageously better at pick 6 than those that follow after father sons are taken we may be better to split our pick with a Richmond etc and get two first round selections. That would give us 2 picks inside 20 and maybe another At 37 or so. Plus Dawson. Likely get one of goater rachelle Draper Erasmus my boy wanganeen-Milera etc. this is assuming we use 23 on dawson

I know this shouldn’t really factor in but if we do split 4 I can’t help but think Sinn and Chesser would be a good combo; Sandringham Dragon team mates with plenty of quality and midfield ‘potential’.

I’d prefer their midfield ability to be proven of course, seems they both would’ve played there a lot more in 2020 and 2021 without COVID.

As soon as Stef tired and couldn't neutralise the ruck contest, it was over and the mids couldnt touch it. Swap rucks and its a different result. Could have had 20 midfielders, wouldnt have mattered
Nah..the dogs were out on their feet and melbourne just wound through the gears. They were miles better conditioned once they weathered the storm

Does anyone know if Elijah Hollands has signed on beyond the two years at GCS?

If he hasn't...I think we should go hard for him and prevent the sign up. I know it's unlikely, and everyone is keen Luko and Rankine (I'm also keen on those lads), however he could be the midfielder we need to complete the group. He was ranked as a potential number 1 last year, and if he hasn't be signed up he could be our answer to missing out on Horne and probably easier to get considering he is a Crows supporter. I know he did his ACL, but if we get Burgess, it's worth the punt IMO.

And if the above is possible, then I think we trade down #4 and go for Draper and and Wanganeen-Milera. The main reason is their current weakness seem to but easier to correct, largely size (not height) rather than skill:

10. Arlo Draper
Best position:
Inside midfield/general forward
Height, weight: 185cm, 71kg
Recruited from: South Adelaide
Projected draft range: 5-25
Plays like: Robbie Gray
August ranking: 15
Rationale: In his League debut, one week after his first week back from an ankle injury, Draper's classy display against North Adelaide made clear beyond doubt he's AFL calibre and plays a significant part in his rise up this draft board. His mix of attributes from contested ball winning, to classy ball use to his movement and strong marking make him among this draft's more appealing prospects.
Strengths:
Contested ball winning
Tackling
Stoppage craft
Composure in traffic
Clean hands
Vision
Locating and hitting targets by foot in the corridor
Lowers his eyes for kicks inside 50m
Overhead marking
Contested marking
Agility
Evasion
Acceleration
Takes on the game with his run
Influential both through the midfield and up forward
Scoreboard impact
Weaknesses:
Strength
Lack of outside accumulation

15. Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera
Best position:
Outside midfield/general defence
Height, weight:188cm, 70kg
Recruited from:Glenelg
Projected draft range: 5-25
Plays like: Shane Edwards
August ranking: Outside-20
Rationale: Spending most of the season in the SANFL Reserves and playing good football, in more recent weeks Wanganeen-Milera has stepped up to League level without any drop off. His SANFL League play along with his performance for South Australia against Western Australia as his side's best see him force his way inside the top-20.
Strengths:
Agility
Evasion
Creates time and space with ball in hand
Composure with ball in hand
Precision kicking
Decision making
Vision
Versatility to play outside or in defence
Impact per possession
Performances on the board
Performs better against better opposition
Weaknesses:
Lack of size or strength
Contested ball winning

If we could get:
Hollands (2023)
Draper + Wanganeen-Milera (Draft)

Combined with our current and upcoming midfield boys:

Pedlar
Berry
Schoenburg
Cook
Laird
Keays
Crouch
*not counting Sloan as he'll be done in the next couple of years

...could add class, agility and speed we need.

I don't know, I could be on crack, Hollands may have already signed and I know the ACL *could be an issue...but I'd be excited by the above combination.
Plus we'd likely get him at a lower price because he hasn't even played an AFL game...if he turns out to be as good as evryone was predicting, his price will go way up once he proves himself.

I’m not exactly doing somersaults about using 4 on a kid without great foot skills.

Would you be happy if he turned into a Dangerfield type? Whatever this board may think and say about Danger (and I include myself in that) you’d take his career at Pick 4 every day of the week, questionable disposal and all.

Heck, Petracca is a turnover merchant, going at a tick above 50% by foot.

Dustin Martin not a whole lot better either, sometimes I wonder if some realise what a mids role is, all they need is to be a proficient kick and most at the top end this year are that.
Zac Taylor is probably close to the best kicking mid in this draft but they likely won't like that he's on the smaller side for a mid.
