If you put points value on yesterday's trades and assume that the ADL/MLB future picks have the same value as this year you get:

ADEL - Out 2,033, In 1,548. Net loss 485
MELB - Out 1,895, In 1,795. Net loss 100
ST K - Out 287, In 373. Net gain 100
WB - Out 1,025, In 1,524. Net gain 499

So in effect we dumped the equivalent of Pick 37. Obviously if we improve from 15th and particularly if Melbourne drops from 1st this points differential would improve by say 50-175 points.

I also realise that picks such as 62 & 64 had almost no value to us. We'd likely only use them to upgrade rookies at best (can still use 80/98) and they had no trade value to anybody but St Kilda who may use them for an NGA match in the 21-40 range (which also means that we cannot do the same for O'Laughlin/Dudley if called in that range).

A 2022 Western Bulldogs 3rd Rounder (233 pts if runner up) would have been nice to balance things up a bit and as possible steak knives for Sydney.

The outcome of this deal must have really pee'ed off Sydney.

well we won't know in points terms until the end of next year where melbourne finish..finish lower than premiers and maybe we are then ahead on points etc.

Somehow I hope we can get Dawson without giving up any of our 1st rounders this year or next. Would be great to go into 2022 with 2 x 1st rounders with certain players coming out of contract and a number of highly rated local lads again in the draft

Unfortunately Dawson and the difficulty his recruitment has forced on us we are losing quite a bit of 2021 draft capital so there's several SA lads that I think would have been in sights we will no longer have the picks to secure them.

I was going to add something similar this morning but ran out of time

With the under exposed form of a lot of players we may feel there is one top 4 prospect and a late smokey

Just remember, once again, picks towards the back-end this year (similarly to last year) are worth much less because of reduced list sizes and a reluctance to draft kids on unexposed form. We have lost out here by 485 points, but 200 of those were junk picks in the 60's. If you go back to pick swaps last year clubs were dying to give them away for higher draft picks, and plenty of teams didn't even end up using theirs. We've managed to get on the front foot here and get a pick into next year and upgrade a pick this year.

It's not as if North Melbourne gave us a choice. The Sturt U18s wouldn't have been able to lose to North Melbourne that day.

I didn't say anything about that game.

Personally I would have liked to see us contrive a loss in the round 19 match against Hawthorn.

I disagree, if anything, this trade period is showing how harmless winning that extra game proved to be as North aren't letting Horne slip past them. Especially if we're not particularly interested in Andrews/Gibcus/Callaghan, and you can certainly make a compelling argument why we shouldn't go near all of them.

Pick 2 or Pick 4 doesn't stop Sydney from pushing for it as long as possible.

So you're suggesting both Reid and Nicks were just posturing when they said we'd be hitting the draft hard again not all that long ago?

That's not my read, my read is we thought getting Dawson over the line was a lot easier than it's turned out.
