If all the mids I assume you are referring to are gone, then one of Erasmus or Rachelle, or Gibcus will be there. Are they not acceptable?
For me yeh, definitely over Andrew. Although Rachelle at 7 might be a bit of a reach at 7 from what I've read.

You seem to be contracting yourself though. You seem to be saying it must be Andrew at 7 if all the 'high rated players' are gone and we should trade the pick. You do specify mids so putting aside Gibcus is not a mid, but I am saying if your scenario of:
Horne
Callaghan
Ward
Hobbs
Erasmus
All go 1-5
That will leave:
Gibcus, Rachelle
So if you don't rate Rachelle at 7, then Gibcus goes at 6.
So if those 6 go before ours, your saying it's better to try and trade the pick.
Not having seen any play, it's difficult, but teams generally go next best rated rather than position. If we have Andrew or Amiss, I think we'll take that player, but we could have Rachelle, or perhaps Sonsie next rated.
Pick 7 could have some good trade value if Andrew is there though, so certainly would be interesting if the phone rang.

Knevitt...first instinct is to go backwards and backwards off the mark when he's marked the ball...not a quick mover of the ball...
No contested possies...hard to tell if he's up for the hard work at the coal face...
Not a smart distributor of the ball his first instinct is kick the ball long...
Vanilla...

Our problem was our midfield and half forward line. Midfield was spanked and our small half forwards were terrible. Castagna, Rioli, Arts etc had zero impact. They provided no defensive pressure and added stuff all to the team’s ability to score. Midfield failure put the defenders under extreme pressure and provided minimal opportunity to our key forwards.
I agree, but that doesn't alter the fact that we barely took a mark outside the 50m arc for the year. Makes it hard to move the ball down the line if nobody is there to fly for it. CCJ did it one match and we looked much better. Chol took a few grabs but was so inconsistent. As I've said, Jack used to and when Lynch moves outside the 50 our forward line works much better. But for some reason he spend most of the season anchored around the goal square.

Melbourne had 3 big forwards in the finals series, Brown, McDonald and Jackson in the GF all playing as high forwards which left the forward line open for Fitsch. The Dogs Naughton is very mobile and moves a long way up the ground. Port have Dixon, Marshall and Georgiades all spending a fair bit of time outside 50m, and push a ruck forward.

We had Chol, who was serviceable, just, and then Jack and Lynch mainly anchored deep. Little wonder we couldn't score. We weren't getting blown away, we just couldn't score and were in most games at 3/4 time.

I think we lack a genuine mid sized forward though. Someone with some tricks and a strong marking threat in the air. That way you keep the oppos mid sized intercept defenders like Stewart, Sicily etc accountable. If you don't have that third marking threat, Jack and/or Lynch get double or even triple teamed. Caddy used to play that role but he couldn't really tackle and chase under our system. Would be good of we could get a 188-191cm mid who can also be a threat forward in the air and around goal.
Yes I agree. It’s why we don’t really score well against teams with a lot of mid-sized defenders in recent years (e.g. Melbourne this year, Sydney, and Port Adelaide). We kick inside 50 and our forwards are mostly either taller than those mid-sized defenders (so not agile enough) or small (so too short to out-mark.

It’s why I am keen on Erasmus, Goater, and Johnson. Two of them would be even better in my opinion. With their heights, they could probably play that role pretty well if needed.

Agree, although McDonald simply has not appeared on my radar. A player at least has to show something for mine. I could not use a draft pick on this McDonald at the moment
I'd probably take him with our pick 15 if he was there, but not our first (7). Though he's looking like he'd be gone before our pick 7 let alone making it to15.

I think Howe, if we could get him with one of the second rounders would be ideal. Fantastic mark for his height and can play wing/midfield and forward.

He is a tantalising prospect, and like Murley would be looked at closely for one of our 2nd round picks. It's one of the reasons I'm not fazed whether we get a lower pick, well unless it's a top 10 pick of course but if we don't strike a deal take, happily take 5 picks to the draft, it's brimming with talent right into the 30's.

Blake Howes

Height 190cm
Weight79kg
Current Team Sandringham Dragons
Birthday April 7, 2003

POSITION: Medium Forward/Wing

SNAPSHOT: “A highly athletic forward with the capacity to play through further afield, Howes catches the eye with his highlight reel moments in the forward half.”

As an AFL Academy member, Vic Metro representative and Sandringham Dragons product, Blake Howes was able to impact across every level of football he played in 2021, showing off his impressive athleticism when given the opportunity. The 190cm talent was mostly played as a half-forward for the year, but was gradually afforded more opportunities up on the wing as the season went on, suggesting there is a fair amount of development left for him in that area of the ground. Having enjoyed his venture up the field, Howes is a prospect who can count himself particularly unlucky as the Victorian season was cut short just as he found his best form.

STRENGTHS:
+ Vertical Leap
+ Overhead Marking
+ Clean Hands
+ Athleticism
+ Upside

IMPROVEMENTS:
– Consistency
– Contested Game

Coming into 2021 as one to watch after an All Australian Under 16s carnival and inclusion in the AFL Academy squad, Howes was impressive with his leap and marking in the forward half the ground. As the year went on, he was given more opportunities further up the ground, looking like a natural on the wing as a link-up player who could effectively hit the scoreboard from the midfield as well.

When playing on the wing, Howes positions well around the ground to be a viable marking option for his teammates, making him dangerous in transition as he could clunk the ball and quickly move it forward. Whilst Howes can take a contested mark without much trouble, he can continue to work on being more effective at ground level. He is competitive and usually shows a clean set of hands, but is moreso an aerial force at the moment.

Should he look to spend more time around the ball in future, developing that ground level game and getting more involved at the contest – rather than being the release option – will hold him in good stead to impact more consistently. As a prospect with x-factor, Howes can also fade in and out of games at times, especially when playing forward, but can even out the troughs to his peaks with time in a professional system.

Despite often feeding off the contested work of others, Howes works well when in traffic – able to keep his hands free in congestion and handball well, making the best decision more often than not. The biggest strength of Howes’ game is his vertical leap, as he is regularly able to get higher in the air than taller opponents which allows him to take his marks easier. At times, this sees him play as a forward target due to his aerial ability.

At the next level, he looms as a handy third tall option or developable outside type. Much of his versatile quality comes through his athleticism, with the springy leap helping his forward craft and a speed-endurance mix boding well for midfield minutes. He showcased his running capacity with a 6:08 2km time in October, and has all the athletic upside which recruiters look for.

DRAFT PROJECTION: Second Round

SUMMARY:

Howes will likely be a pick made on upside, with his array of developable traits and continued rate of development all very promising. His athleticism is high-level across the board, but he was also able to show his footballing nous with increasing success throughout the season. Versatility is another big tick for Howes, who can be moulded into a few different roles and has a high ceiling in terms of what he could become in an elite environment. He looks set to be taken somewhere within the second round and could push into top 25 contention.

A wordsmith?
Jack be nimble,,Jack be quick
Words resemble a walking stick
Plant them watch them grow
Let them waver so
Ill always be a word man
Much better than a bird man

If we keep all our picks:
Hobbs
Taylor
McDonald
Howes
Murley

I'd be over the moon.
Is this the AFL.com writeup effect pushing Taylor to 15? I haven't seen him in any top 20 ratings. Admit he looks good on the writeups, but...
You'd prefer him over Goater, Sinn, Johnson, Draper, Sonsie as one or more of them will be there @ 15 and Taylor is a chance at 26?

Hobbs/Ward or Johnson would be my 1st choice.None would be available @ 15
But watching the Dogs inparticular Bailey Dale & Caleb Daniel the emphasis on footskills is the way we should go with the stand rule.
Just a personal choice with Taylor.I doubt he'll be available @26.

If we dont take Howes/Chesser or similar with one of our three picks in the late 20s, in light of guys like Castagna and Aarts on the list, then I one can conclude there has either been a fundamental glitch in the matrix, or, this reality has somehow crossed over into a parallel universe.

And you can take that to the bank.

Im thinking Howes over Chesser for the outside mid pick in the 20s. But would be happy with Chesser too.
Seen Chesser in two full games. Looks a million dollars with ball in hand, however, not a high possession getter and his impact was minimal. Does not appear to work hard enough.
