It has an index at the top with threadmarks so it's easy to find what you're looking for – or easier than scrolling through 250 pages of AFL Rules, Regulations and CBA pdfs anyway.

These sorts of questions are all answered along with a bunch of other resources made by posters from across BigFooty (feel free to add to it!):

We've had a similar conversation before on this topic - and TBH, you're probably right that Giants don't do that.

However, my view is increasingly that Phil Davis has limited time left. While Stein had a great final against Swans, I view him as limited and mainly a VFL defender who covers short term gaps in the first grade team. Keeping Davis out demonstrated to me that Phil's got problems. Now, I may be wrong, it might just have been a difficult recovery from his earlier injury for Phil and he comes good to start 2022. However, if I'm right, then he'll retire end of next year.

IMHO, the structure that Leon likes to play at the back is 4 talls. When we still had Corr and had recruited Taylor, it was Davis/Corr/Taylor/Haynes. A few years ago it was Davis/Corr/Patfull/Haynes. I think we are now replicating this with Idun as the Patfull replacement (similar height and somewhat similar game styles). So I'm not ignoring Idun & Haynes, they are just different roles.

So our squad in an ideal setup (IMHO of how Leon selects) has Taylor/Davis/Idun/Haynes in AFL with the VFL setup being Keeffe/Stein/Buckley/Fleeton. Buckley was planned I think as a third tall but came on really well in season 2021 and showed he could play second tall. If Davis and Keeffe retire at the end of 2022 (or even if Keeffe goes on, surely it would be only 1 more season), and throw in the two LTIs, I just think there's an opening this year for someone who will take Davis' spot in the squad in 2023. It could be a draftee (ideally) - I'm just not loving any of those options. To me, Lienert could be the Keeffe-type pickup who probably isn't first choice in the AFL team but can play quite ably when he fills in. The problem - or opportunity - is that Giants seem to regularly require a fill-in KPD!

So I'd see an opportunity for 2023 to be: Taylor/Buckley/Idun/Haynes with back up from Lienert/Stein/draftee/Fleeton, where the draftee is taken next year with time to develop into their role.

Yes, Lienert would be having to compete, but he's just been cut, so it's compete or have no further AFL career. I daresay there might be a couple of clubs who look at him - which would be on the same basis as being a back up KPD. I just think he'd have a better chance of playing more first grade at GWS than most other clubs. (Perhaps Geelong might be equal or better!)
Yeah we have absolutely done this to death. I think I came around in the end too

But it was when reading that post that I thought it unlikely we target a tall this year. Most definitely we might target a ready made player next year or we might wait till next year to draft one. I just think it’s a hard sell to ask a bloke to compete with three others for one spot on minimal wages in a new city

Anyway. I think we agree it’s a long term need. You just want it addressed this year and I am happy to wait 12 months

Thought he couldn’t kick?
Yes, fantastic interceptor, but the knock on him is his kicking.

I remember when we were about to buy one young Toby Greene a blue and white striped apron because he was such a butcher of the ball by foot.

kicking deficiencies can be fixed if the player is willing and coaching is right.

it‘s not a completely insurmountable problem.

Reckon there would be a few clubs in competition, and I have a feeling he would prefer a Melbourne club than Sydney.

Nevertheless, no harm asking the question.

I would think that we would need to decide on a position - either forward or defender, and commit to playing him there. Being a swingman at WCE hasn't worked for him. Perhaps forward might be his best role - essentially a mobile third forward, effectively replacing Finlayson.

I'm not big on him, so if he's not interested or GWS isn't, I'm none too fussed.

Mumford is almost certain to retire, but that hasn’t been made official. There won’t be any further delistings at the Giants, with Phil Davis, Zach Sproule and Jake Stein all receiving one-year deals. That means there are five spots to fill. Three of those are expected to be used at the national draft, including likely matching a bid on Academy prospect Josh Fahey.

I might disappear into a quiet place with a tub of vaso and a moist towel if that eventuated.

🤣 I joke Giant Strides
Ive said a few times, I reckon if we went Callaghan at 2 (4) there is a decent chance that Mac is there at 13 (15). It is a huge project, not many sides can wait 3 years with no return

The Suns would probably take him given the amount of interviews and time they've put in 🎉

In the Big footy draft Mac got to 15 as well. PMBangers took Gibcus with his first pick though, I was glad that Bangers doesnt make our picks at that time.
Isn’t that kid of like saying in my opinion she was Taylor Swift but in reality she was Magda Szubanski?

It’s pure fantasy. Who cares what really happens in a mock draft? It’s a just an opportunity to waste time isn’t it?

No, its nothing like that at all.

Its worth noting in several drafts of knowledgeable people making selections for the clubs based on their judgements for what their clubs need have not selected Andrews and that is an indicator that there is a reasonable chance he will be available at 15 as those who actually make the decision will have similar thought processes and information. Does it mean it will pan out that way, of course not, but it interesting information.

Interesting option there.
In one sense, given all the young talent on the list they can afford to take a high risk, high reward selection, but they also need some success shortly.
They are certainly a chance to take him at 3 (5)

We clearly have vastly differing opinions on what’s “interesting” then. 👍
