Let hold him back another six years or so. Can retire without getting injured again.

Take 3 tall fellas and keep the one that shows the most by the end of the season. Ez.If he’s joined DC & Marchy on the Inactive list but you’d think we would do that if we’re announcing this week as season over, just in time for the cut-off.
Do we see value in the MSD to utilise 3 picks though...

Also have to consider if the guys we are interested in, will accept the 6 month contract.

You are dreaming if you think Merrett will come to Carlton given the undoubted improvements in * and all the media hype about it. Merrett will stay put at *What’s this media talk of Tom Mitchell to us??
Merrett is way better and won’t cost us picks
We will easily be able to afford him with Murphy, Betts , Casboult and Ed retiring
(I know Ed is still getting a kick but he is holding up development of our young uns)
Thoughts?

Ideally we’re not recruiting players for the very short term ala Deluca and have some longer term players in mind but it is the mid-season draft (though one with a bit of a twist with last years lack of exposure).

One of the AFL draft "experts" suggested that there would be only 12 - 14 picks used in total. Sounds strange if there are plenty prepared to take 6 month contracts, surely it's a free hit. Would have a look at Mirkov as a long term project and Maher (6 months).Ideally of course, but if we recruit 2 or 3 guys on the 18 month deal and not the 6, the number of delisting at seasons end will need to be around 8 or more, which seems high.
Id hope for our first pick we would offer the 18 but only the shorter deal for the next picks.
The Mitchell talk would be people putting two and two together, and it kind of makes sense. Good relationship with Cripps, elite player at a club bottoming out (speed up Hawks rebuild).
The benefit for us is: Easier to trade with Hawks than Essendon (who you'd imagine would match a bid), improvement on the prolific Ed Curnow in the midfield as he moves towards retirement, clubs would have the conundrum of who to tag between Walsh, Cripps and Mitchell.
Cripps has shown the last few years he's involved in recruiting players but Mitchell is contracted until 2023 and we'd have to weigh up whether we want to invest in another high cost midfielder with what would be overs in a trade
Only 13 were taken in 2019. If you don't actively need help at a position, or view someone as a longer term prospect (ala Mirkov), there's not really much point in taking someone for the sake of it.One of the AFL draft "experts" suggested that there would be only 12 - 14 picks used in total. Merrett and Billings for free (in terms of picks) would of course be huge, and I suppose we have enough inside midfielders to focus on other pressing needs.Don't think he is the type we should target
I believe we need more speed/better footskills.
I would look at OOC's like say Jack Sinclair or similar types, who should be getting more midfield minutes

Agreed on that front. You'd think there'd be lots of interest in kids, but maybe clubs are happy to wait for the National Draft for that. A full season of scouting before taking a chance, perhaps? You'd think with no U18s comp last year there would be a number of guys who have impressed as long term prospects
Bont and Oliver wouldn't have been selected if it wasn't for their final year of U18s for example

Yes on all fronts. Can play inside and outside. Is still a jet and won’t need to give up much to get him.Billings?

Billings?
We’ve got inside mids in abundance so I wouldn’t mind him being the outside class we desperately need.See him more as a flanker
Yeah I’m pretty sure he’s a RFA. Value is low at the moment and I doubt they will match. I don’t think they have enough to afford him after bringing in Crouch, Hill & co.Is he a free agent?
I reckon he is a bit of a pea heart

Shai Bolton is still out of contract and despite the very likely Carr shenanigans - we should be doing everything we can to get his signature. Skillful, quick, aggressive, versatile and young.
