sh*t, I thought he would have been nominated at least? That's absurd.
He's definitely a dynamic half-back when fit.

Nope. He is a good solid back pocket. I like him as a player - when fit and confident he's tough, he runs, he's fine.

And, I honestly think we have to consider getting off that contract immediately. It just skews everything. He's our highest paid player FFS. Ahead if Walsh, Weitering, McKay, Curnow - all of them. Cripps - not sure, but I think he is on less too. And it is locked in for 6 years. There is a good chance our highest paid player in 2026 will be a 32 year old back pocket who has never been All Australian. Could you maybe fit in one higher salary than that? Perhaps. Two? Nope, I don't think so. So Cripps re signs , maybe McKay for less ($700k now), and Walsh $700k next year. But that contract isnt budging until their next extension is done.

If you hope to see Carlton contend in the next half decade, I don't know how that fits into the vision. I like him as a guy, but sheesh that is an utter disaster of a deal.

Question is who do we back in / keep and who do we let go ...

In my opinion ...

Gone - Murphy, Betts, Newnes, Gibbons
Shaky - Kennedy, Newman, McDonald, Levi
Trade - Dow, SPS

Best 22 (keep)

Docherty. Jones. Plowman.
Williams. Weitering. Saad.
L’Ob. Stocker. Cuningham.
Martin. McGovern. Charlie.
Fisher. McKay. JSOS.

R. TDK. Cripps. Walsh.
I. Fogarty. Owies. Setterfield. Parks.

E. (keep). Kemp. Durdin. Carroll. Philp.

Depth - Pitto. Ed Curnow. Marchbank. Williamson. Honey. Ramsay. Mirkov. Cottrell.
Everyone's thoughts will differ slightly on this. Mine are pretty close to yours, except that I'm not keen on letting SPS and Dow go unless we get an attractive return. Do think it's the right time to discharge the older guys, with exceptions being Ed and Jones - both have their faults but they play the game hard, usually get their job done, and set a good example to the younger guys.

I'll never understand why people post this sort of thing. There's pretty much no chance of this actually being correct, despite Williams obviously having received a hefty contract to come across.

Well it certainly isn't the supporters who are to blame for poor performance.

The club needs to take responsibility.

From the moment we made Cripps and Doc dual captains we were doomed.
Totally symbolic of our inability to make a decision. Cripps was clearly the best candidate. Murphy should have been made to step aside the year before. Murphy should be sanctioned for his comments regarding team selection that are all over the media. The club hasn't drawn a decent line in the sand for as long as I can remember.
From the top down we appear gutless. We crumble under pressure on every level.

Name one decision made by the club that we, as supporters, have been able to stand behind with pride. Non-committal right down to rubbish injury reports. 1-2 weeks is a catch cry that shouldn't exist.

I'm done.

What are you mods even protecting? This club has no substance.

I can't defend us in public any more so I'm done supporting us.

Done.

All this had its genesis when the club made the decision to terminate Bolton. Instead of standing behind him and unconditionally supporting him, the club reacted to the group of players who did not like his brand of footy. Bolton demanded accountability (get comfortable being uncomfortable), and there was a group that did not like this. Who are they??? The same group mentioned week in and week out, who run one way and are not interested in sacrificing themselves for the team and only want to do the easy things. Now we see the consequences.

Williams & Saad are obvious assets in our back line and should not be moved.
If we get McGov, up together with our elite talls, Weitering and Jones, last spot can br raffled between Newman, Parks or Boyd , I think he’ll be a gem.
We’ve got an awesome defense and great launching pad for our forward line.

Bolton completely lost sight of the fact that winning actually means something.
His disastrous half time address against Hawthorn had as coughing up a 5 goal lead, and some great footy turning to crap.
Accountability? Please.

He lost the players, and that was on him, not the players. He had to go. There was an instant turn around.

The issue was not the sacking of Bolton, but decisions made since then.

How many players on our list do you expect to be earning more than $800k per year? Maybe it's 2-3 max? But that's assuming we keep/retain players worth that much. If Cripps and McKay go this offseason (not impossible), Walsh signs a 4-year extension at a slightly lower level (4 years @$750k would be huge for a 21 year old and would take him through 2026)... then we are left with:
- Charlie Curnow out of contract 2023? I'd be rapt if his next contract is worth $800k+ per year, because honestly I'd be rapt just to see him play again at all, and if he is worth that much, then great
- Docherty OOC 2023 - won't be signing for $800k+
- De Koning OOC 2023 - won't be signing for $800k+
- Weitering OOC 2025? Might possibly be worth $800k+ but that would likely make him close to the highest paid defender in the league...

If Cripps and McKay leave, then it is quite realistic that Williams is the highest paid player on our list in 2026. There's no other current player (bar possibly Weitering) who projects to be at that point, and what are our odds of attracting a star worth that much before then?

I think it is very feasible that Williams, at 32, could be our highest paid player. I think it is almost certain that for the 2024-2026 period he is in our top 5 paid players, even if we keep our current big guns.

He is flat out not good enough, and never has been, to be receiving that money and profile and it will create too many other problems if we actually start to rise. Again, we're going to be eating a shit sandwich from now into the offseason - might as well take our medicine and find the trade for him if we can.

Why was there an instant turnaround??? Teague let the players do what they wanted. I said at the time when this laissez faire approach wore off he would have problems, and surprise surprise, the same players are now not listening to him. Teague has lost the players, and according to Caroline Wilson, some are openly bad mouthing him.

He didn't let them do what they wanted.
He tweaked the game plan and made some positional changes. Either way, what Bolton was doing wasn't working.

I could believe this .. Murphy snide remark about his form and coach not seeing it has some under current otherwise he wouldn't be game enough to say anything -- just as he took swipe at malthouse 2 years after he left but at the time was at home in hiding ..
I said the other day tail wags the dog at Carlton and has for a very long time -- we sacked a 100 goal forward cause he upset the captains wife on the piss and we had already been managing these off field issues with fev for how long already - on the field fev always delivered .. if cripps and docherty hadn't been arguing on the bench during the * game would Bolton of been sacked that week -I don't know as I just a supporter but as an outsider seems we have had the same issues for 10-14years -- Pagan era just had a deplorable group of players which were never
Going anywhere after the AFL nuclear attack and he probably lost
Interest ..

Interesting to see two players who were closely linked to us - and who many on here dismissed as worth trading for - are having career best seasons, are both in the top 10 in the coaches voting and are in everyone’s all Australian teams for now and likely will be end of the year officially

Alas both Oliver and Wines are no longer available - either of them would have been far more useful right now than Saad or Williams

Same name keeps getting mentioned over and over. He didn't like MM, didn't like BB, and now he doesn't like DT..Someone like that walking around in the dressing room sharing his concerns with younger players....

We have to go after Mitchell. He is the ball magnet we need in the middle to help Walsh and Cripps.

In the end they didn't want to come so no use looking at that --
But the Williams payload will be a noose around our neck for a while unless we had the cap space to heavily front load it -- SAAD cost us a first rounder when we had take two first two years in a row previously so it fair . Just hope he like houli and improve defensively with age ..

but each of those would have cost more in draft/trade capital than Saad & Williams combined, plus the question of if they were actually genuinely considering us or if it was simply managers posturing for a better deal

Geez how you have backtracked.

Weren't you the one that stated Teague coached the first half of that game, then Bolton took over?

And now we are still experiencing those massive run ons

Haven't backtracked at all. That was a turning point in terms of losing a bunch of the players.

While both Bolton and Teague game plans are heavily swayed in one/opposite directions, players also need to take responsibility

No gameplan is perfect, buy in the most important factor
