The sanfl & aflw kicking the ball out rule would be better than most of the crap these clowns have come up with.
I quite like that rule.

Stops the "bail out and reset" kick down the line. There is a definite tactic to get the ball over the line when no direct forward play. Well disguised to stop deliberate calls.

Forces more forward play.

This has been a surprisingly successful rule. When it first came in, I was dead against it, but it removes most doubt for out of bounds decisions.
I agree but still players shepherding or watching the ball go over the boundary with no effort to get to the ball needs to be unrewarded

A rule which has no interpretation attached to it is always better than one that does. It's why it's less frustrating than a deliberate out of bounds rule which has zero consistency across games and umpires.

I'm willing to give Hamish a bit more time under Nicks. I don't think Pyke and co did the recruiters any real favors when it came to developing their picks, though there is a concerning trend on spending first round picks on guys like Gallucci and Jones who are midfielders who have struggled to find the ball at AFL level.
People also seem to forget that Gooch had a run of games in the back end of 2018 where he looked to have the goods as an afl player. I think something else may have also contributed to his down fall.

Technically, the the rules states if a player is shepherding the ball over the line the field umpire will direct the ball be thrown in.

The rule's been sparingly used though - and to be honest, I haven't seen many teams shepherd the ball over the line.

Not the first time I have seen people alluding to something here. Is there anything to it? Seems so.

Last preseason he was flying from memory. Looked impressive. The position of the team and being Victorian during Covid, he probably lost interest. He had enough chances anyway and I don't think he really ever commanded selection. It wouldn't surprise me if the state of the club really killed his enthusiasm for AFL. Adelaide is a tough place media wise to not be performing to expectations.

Nope. He was left out of the pre-season games, and then we had the remarks from Godden.

2019 he was looking reasonable until getting concussed in the first half of a showdown. He was the sole player dropped after we capitulated, and then basically never fired another shot in his time on the list.

I'm coming around to the idea of expanding the bench

Six on the pine absorbs the impact of any injury, concussion or otherwise.
I was actually thinking it was our chance to maybe win a game this year, if the other team has less than 18 fit players to take to the field during a game. :$

According to The Age, the introduction of an injury substitute is almost certain

It is a good idea. I just don't want to see an injured player with hammy awareness come off and all of a sudden he is ruled out with concussion. Then the AFL the whole next week defends the club and doctor like they defend poor umpiring decisions.

lol, i must have been thinking of someone else. oh well. he isnt missed. had enough chances anyway.

I do think if an injured player does come off and is substituted, they should be ineligible to play the following week.

I dont agree with it. It would just further dilute the game as players not good enough for best 22 get absorbed into the rotations. With rotations down, i dont think injuries are causing as much of an issue as they were 5 years ago. I would like to see rotations further reduced. The bench should not be impacting games. They should be their purely for injuries and for tactical and form substitutes. The bench in no way shape or form should ever have been used for resting players.

Well this is all getting a bit complicated now...

Why does there need to be a concussion sub? We tried this sub thing a few years back. Everybody hated it.

Apparently at least some of the coaches loved it, according to the The Age article I linked yesterday.

It's probably a good rule change for us seeing as we seem to lose a player to concussion in the first 10 minutes of every game.

Is it an injury sub or a concussion only sub
With the first game only 2 days away, they still haven't made up their minds:
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/mar/16/afl-concussion-substitute-rule-call
“I think there’ll be a decision or an announcement in the morning,” McLachlan told Fox Footy’s AFL 360. “There’s a lot of stakeholder management to work through, directionally, [but] this is what I’d say: this is something that’ll have no impact on the game, the rules. It’s a health and safety possibility that I think makes sense if the clubs and coaches want to support it.”

McLachlan indicated the discussions were still ongoing amid deliberations over whether a substitution would be a general medical substitution, rather than just for concussions. “That’s why we’re still discussing it, because I think that medical aspect rather than just concussions, is where this might go,” McLachlan said. “I think that’s what Steve Hocking’s working through at the moment.”
... a lot of stakeholder management to work through. The first game of the season is only 2 days away FFS!

Given the AFL rule about a 12 day lay off for concussion, I suspect we might see a knocked out Port player get subbed out - but only because of his hamstring injury. Hence he gets replaced, but doesn't need to 12 days off.

The rule needs to be simple. Any player subbed out with injury, must miss the next week regardless of the injury. It's the only thing that will stop clubs manipulating it.

The 21 years and under idea is great - until a club tries to bend the rule or to get around it. It won't be long before a club claims that their under 21 year old players aren't physically ready and it would be an injury risk to play them. Get their club doctors to sign off on it and the VFL will happily bend it for a 22 year or older old sub.
