Rock and roll lost its balls a long time ago.

There's an excellent interview with Frank Zappa somewhere where he said that the people perceived as conservative - record company executives in the 1950s and 1960s - were actually quite openminded. They didn't interfere with the artist as long as it sold. Now they control everything, and accordingly the output absolutely sucks.
