12. ST KILDA

Record: 8-10, 86.9%

R20: Carlton (W)

R21: Sydney (L)

R22: Geelong (L)

R23: Fremantle (W)

WE SAY: The Saints blew their chance to stay in the finals race with an eight-point loss to West Coast on Saturday. They have the fifth-worst percentage in the competition and still have two tough games to come against top-six sides Sydney and Geelong. They would need to pull one out of the hat against one of those sides – as well as beat Carlton and Fremantle – to be any chance of sneaking into September. Even in they won three more games, St Kilda would need Richmond, Essendon and GWS to all lose at least two of their final four games to make the cut.

PREDICTED FINISH: 10th

TAB PREMIERSHIP ODDS: $101

Leo will be a beauty IMO. The best thing with those two boys are that they are footballers, not athletes trying to be footballers.
Our recent drafting and trading has been good, even Hill hitting his straps now. We just need to nail this draft and then see what the Ben King situation throws up next year.
Leo is an athlete too though, great burst and agility.

"However, star forwards of the game traditionally take a little longer to develop than some of their teammates. When comparing to stars of now and then, King doesn't appear as just a prospect, his numbers already are an ode to his talent and potential.

In his 35 games so far, King has kicked 52.46. While on the surface, the numbers look wildly inconsistent, they are not at all unusual for a forward finding his feet."

Good article on King's first couple of years and his numbers.

It only took one excellent game to get him into the bigtime, watch out if he kicks a lazy against the baggers this week. Highly likely because they have a very leaky defence.

"NAUGHTY OR NICK?

Saints fans, look away now.

Before the 2017 draft there was a heated debate around Nick Coffield and Aaron Naughton at the St Kilda list management meeting.

List boss Tony Elshaug was adamant Naughton was the Saints’ man if he was still there at Pick 8 and he had most of his recruiters on side.

But Alan Richardson disagreed. The coach wanted more midfielders and pushed hard for Coffield. Richardson won the discussion and St Kilda went with the on-baller.

Those in the room for the debate said Richardson was adamant that they needed more ball-winners.

Coffield has shown signs but hasn’t nailed his spot, while Naughton is one of the most exciting key forwards in the league.

Three years earlier, St Kilda picked Jack Billings over Marcus Bontempelli.

There is time yet for Coffield, but as it stands Richardson got that one wrong. And officials at the Saints remember it like it was yesterday, not that they care to reflect on Richardson’s tenure too often"

Wonder if it was Richo stuffing up all our draft picks by making captain's calls and not Trout after all.
McCartin was Trout. I remember a video where, I think it was Richo and Finnis came in, and they were all like "Are you sure about this, we've just gotta get this right", and Trout was going on about how how McCartin had such great character, came from a good footballing family, and so on....
I've had high hopes for Coff, but if he doesn't get out of this trough really soon it's really going to lower his ceiling as a player I think.
Anyway, we can't be sure that we'd have King if we took Naughton, so no point crying about it. Pretty damn happy to have big Max.

Thanks for sharing. Whilst this is interesting to discuss, as these forums are for, it really doesn’t matter IMO. As Saints fans, we more than anyone should know that drafts can always go wrong, they’re calculated risks on potential. There is always a better player you should’ve taken at your pick etc etc, and the media LOVE to churn articles out of hindsight. And if my memory serves me correctly, five other teams could have taken Naughton anyway 🤷‍♂️

I wasn’t a big fan of AFL during the Richo years, so I didn’t follow the club closely, but he does not give me good vibes. Appears that we have a much better team behind the scenes these days.

IMO, we have done very well from the 2017 draft. Clark, Coffield, Paton, Higgins (traded in), Clavarino. That’s a good crop of kids.

Pretty frustrating in hindsight as it shows that our recruiters actually had a bit of a clue. Naughton has been incredible.

Although to be fair to Richo, pretty much everyone on this board had the same view as him. We needed more mids. Coffield still has lots of talent but as it turns out he is more of an intercepting HBF than a mid. But there is still plenty of time for him to develop. It's not all doom and gloom, Coffield still looks like he will play 200 games for us.

He was family friends with Petracca and didn't push for him either. He was a total ****knuckle.

Amazing how quickly it changes isnt it. Last year most would have been happy with Coff. Hopefully he can get back to his best, has had a shocking season.

Naughton already showed signs of being the next Wayne Carey though. Naughton is going to be something special. Coffield is still looking like he's soldier class. Last year he at least looked like a soldier with a big gun. This year he look like he's jumping out of the trenches with a cap gun. I reckon Highmore might be the end of Coffield in his preferred role too. If we get Gibcus he probably struggles to break back into the side again without injury.

If Naughton was the next Carey then I guess that makes Max the next John Coleman after Friday night :)

Not sure I agree with that take on Coff, second half of last year he was outstanding, almost AA level good.

If taking naughton meant we passed on Max King then I’m happy with Coffield.
Exactly, its like every choice is in isolation and has no consequences.

We have Max King, we will get Ben King, because we have Max King.

This is before we look at anything they can do on the field for us.

If Naughton is Carey ( which he is not or wont be) then Max is Plugger, Dunstall and Hudson all rolled into one. Bing is only as good as Buddy and Riewoldt unfortunately.

I'm really happy with Coffield think he will be a very good player
But my god Richo was nothing but a disaster for Stkilda, he alone set the club back years

So much revisionist history regarding Coff , so much sliding doors/ unknown consequences.
At the time Coff was very much and still is arguably the correct choice. Naughton was very very much a KPD with potential to play in the forward line. He was no where near the dominant forward he is now. Coff throughout his career so far has shown ability. He’s shown he can be a good intercept mark. The other thing improvement is not linear. He is good enough. The issue is he keeps getting injured when he is building back up. People need to be patient. I have previously mentioned my concern over him losing his pace. Let’s not lose the plot.
