Now, it's easy to criticise Joyces in hindsight and say he should have done all those things, but trading always requires two willing parties, and clubs just didn't want to give up those early picks that year. And in hindsight, you can say we should have traded a future first but those what if games are a bit silly (even if I sometimes think about them as well). Who's to say that we trade that future first, and then the next year we can't do the deal with Melbourne and ultimately we don't end up with Tom Powell? There's too many permutations.

Agree. To be completely honest, the 2014 and 2015 drafts are bigger reasons to critique list management. Some dire mistakes there. Everything has been okay to good in my books since 2016, bar a few missteps.

Surely we keep Ham for another 12 months.

I defy anyone to fairly evaluate how he will perform after zero games in only 6 months on the list.
Posters will make statements like this but our recruiters and list managers do have to make decisions on really limited vision/stats etc. If it's ridiculous to judge off a small sample size then we might as well not draft any Victorians this year. Personally, I've had to justify the Ham pick in my own mind because from all descriptions, stats and vision he doesn't look like AFL quality to me. If it's down to Atley or Ham, I would keep Atley.

Was definitely a strange pic at the time, I'm with ya. Nothing against Ham, but just seemed an odd choice.

Eh, I disagree. In my opinion it makes sense for them to drop back from 9 to 20 in this draft as they don't have enough points to match the projected bids in the 20's. But in the end its a hypothetical and likely won't happen so arguing about it on here is pointless.

What you fail to realise is that pick 9 will net them a top 10 player and pick 20 and points only nets them the 20th best for a few scraps of points for NGA players, when they can simply go into deficit next year and have both.

seems to pretty much confirm that the deal with CCJ required from his perspective a negotiated outcome, not the PSD

I must say, that is the most useless analysis I have ever seen after a draft.
Cody and Sean do excellent work. I like their perspective as alternative to the usual ex players just saying the trade week equivalent of “yeah nah got the four points credit to the boys they done good”

This time it just seemed a bit cobbled together, with data and comparisons that didn't suit the analysis, or was too scant on explaining the methodology.
Maybe a tight deadline hurt them.

Edit: I also must admit to a dislike of the extent these types of articles go to justify calls on 'winners' and 'losers' so early.
And I should have said trade period, nobody is perfect I guess.

Charlie Constable worth it as a DFA?

Any good?

For a second I thought it was Brayden Maynard and was bunkering in for this place going into overdrive.
Slow, not very good. Got a surprising run of chances in the seniors under Buckley. Will be remembered far longer for that “Phill Inn” injury than any on field exploits.

This makes no sense.
North had Pick 11, right?
Crows bid on Tarryn at Pick 8.. which would have meant we had to use Pick 11...
The contention is we should have traded up into the top 5-6 to get ahead of the bid, and ended up with a King twin or a Bailey Smith as well as TT. My contention is that most people who say that don’t give much thought to how or at what cost. Moving up like that is really expensive - pick 6 is the highest pick that changed hands in that trade period, and it effectively cost 11, 23, and 30 (it really did the rounds that trade period - it was traded for Lachie Neale, Steven May, and Jesse Hogan by different clubs). If we’d been able to trade up to 6, we still would have been in the TT Uncertainty Zone.

IMO we should have used it to trade into another 1st in 2019 instead. Nonetheless you won’t find anyone defending the Polec trade as it turned out.
