Much better forfeiting the cap money than making dumb decisions. From the moment we heard in the interest in Hannebery we all knew that this was going to be the outcome. His body was not up to the demands of professional football.
To give him 4 years and $3M + was absolutely ridiculous.
Oh well
Only a year to go now

Martin has been okay but not $1 million a year good.

He only got the mil for the 1st year so they could get him through the PSD.

He’s been very good for them. Stats schmats… he doesn’t rack up pointless stats like others.

I'm not sold on that on though, Jack Newnes isn't any more than he was at stkilda. You could say Bruce is having a good year, but he was sh*te last year. Plays well when winning, barely sighted when they lose.
Hind, you would say is the exception, but heis also 26 and if starts to struggle will be gone pretty quickly you would suggest.
They started paying attention to himself week and went at 65% de which is pretty woeful for a back flanker
This is so true.
Good luck to Hind, but his success needs to be measured on the entire body of his work, not just this year’s twelve games. I am not surprised that teams are focusing on him now. That was only a matter of time.
If he works through that attention, fantastic. I will be the first to praise him.
But call me skeptical, there is a reason why we let him go cheaply.
And why we got him cheaply too.

I still worry about our development. We should at least improve some of this stuff if the review cuts deep enough. Players seem to go backwards in our system and play better once they leave. Target someone in an elite system and steal their IP is just good business IMO.
You don't get more elite than picking the Hawthorn brains trust with Ratten and Rath add to that Hill , Roughead and Frawley.

Development is not the problem - we have developed Marshall and Steele add to that Paton , Wilkie and Howard played better for us than what he did for Port and Coffield and Clark are a season away from showing what they have - remember Petracca and Parish never showed much until they turned 24.

Our season been turned on it's head because of not having Marshall , Gresham , Jones , Paton and in my opinion Carlisle crashing and burning.
I don't care about the injuries to Geary , Frawley etc because they would not made a difference to the team.
Our game plan is based on at least halving the midfield and not having Marshall , Jones and Gresham decimated it.
And Paton just did a job on the best small forward.

Anyway next season trade period we are cashed up knowing Roberton was on 700k a year and we get a extra 650k next year there is no reason we can't snap up a un - contracted Shai Bolton or a Tom Green / Hooper and even a Brander from WCE to fix our Key position hole.

Imagine playing the Tigers next week with the addition of Bolton , Brander , Marshall , Gresham , Jones and Paton.

The team has been shown up this year and not having the 4 players I have mentioned and Carlisle who showed last year he held the defense together has been sorely missed.

On the bright side this year we have seen Higgins bloom , Crouch show he is a A grade mid and Highmore , Byrne , Bytel all show they are up to grade and Sinclair is now showing his worth.

Anyway this coming trade period I hope they have a marking chb lined up.

Can’t win his own footy
Questionable leadership
Not hard at it

reminds me a lot like Marc Murphy

not what Roos need, they have lots of young talent with his skill set. He will just be another Polec.
This is the narrative some have run with imo he’s a very productive player who wins about as much contested ball as you’d expect from a wingman.

I wouldn’t think there was a massive amount between billing and josh Kelly, yes Kelly shades him but it would be pretty close. Mark murphy isn’t the player he once was but at his best he did win a Brownlow and captain his club so it’s hardly an insult to compare him with billings.

Anyway i like and rate billings highly, despite the noise he’s quietly putting together another good season and would easily be in our top 6. I hope he stays with the saints and would be surprised if we let him walk for anything less than band 1 compensation.

Unfortunately for Martin he got way less than $1m in his first. Biggest year of his front loaded contract coincided with Covid reductions. At least the Blues are getting some value out of him.

Hill has been a horrible player at the Saints and nothing like what we expected. He's had about 5 games where he's played well and a couple were in a position that we hadn't drafted him for and one we couldn't give games to Nick Hind in. He should have been dropped several times already. He might come good as the side improves but he's as bad a Newnes and Acres so far.

Billings is a good player and in our top 10 players. It's massive risk trading him but because they have ****ed up the list build they realise they won't go anywhere without drafting some kids with high picks.....literally what we should have done first. We are now expected to trust that the club who have spent 20 years stuffing up drafts to trust them to trade out one of the few that worked out and do it all again with no new recruiting staff.

I think unfortunately we've run the list down so far we have to take a risk. I honestly doubt that we make finals next year regardless unless we have a nearly zero injury list. Unfortunately I think we are obsessed with Ben King so will sit out of another two drafts first rounds after this one so really need to get these first round picks right this year. We should be hacking into the recruiting notes of the good recruiters.

Probably couldn’t get Hind a game at HB because we had very few injuries.

They had a list of the 10 players who had dropped away the most in the competition, Butler, Coffield, Marshall and Long were all on it. I don't think we'll trade in any players this year, we look set to take players high in the draft which we should do. We aren't topping up by the look of it. We will lose a lot of players next year and probably step backwards for a period.

Maybe, on the radio they said we wouldn't give him a basic two year contract and that Essendon did so he walked. We hopefully plan beyond the season we are playing in. It was weird that we got those guys in and moved them out again. Parker another strange one.

We offered him the same 1 year extension the was offered Lonie and Carlisle, who had as just as many or more runs on the board.

Offering fringe players 1 year deals seems like a fairly standard list management strategy.

With our increased salary cap they would be crazy not to use it , I doubt we could get a Cripps or Kelly but we could easily use it on enticing a Bolton or a Hooper however that would require a draft pick which we can't spare because we do need to stay high in the draft.
Brander is the type we need to fill Carlisle spot.
Whatever happens next year we will out perform whatever we do this year - with Marshall , Gresham , Paton and Jones back in the 22 and hopefully the form of the younger brigade improves in Coffield , Clark , King and Battle.

Dunno why some are talking up Martin. Blues fans want him dropped

He plays some good games and teases like he did at GCS, I haven't watched much of the Blues lately but earlier in the year he seemed pretty uninspiring and certainly not a high priced recruit. I sw last nights stats and Williams and Martin both only had 11 possessions and apart from Eddie Betts who plays forward and Newnes as sub, had the lowest stats for Carlton. That's Hill levels of bad trade to me. Both are in the highest paid players at the club.

The only good thing about this season is that Carlton are still worse than us. It's my new definition of a successful season. Are we better than that s**tstain of a club?

The answer is yes.

Martin & Gresh. Froffageeeee

Martin was meant to be the best player to come out of WA and hasn't lived up to the hype. I'll stick with Gresham. Carlton are like the Bermuda Triangle of performance though. How every one of their recruits turned to shit once they arrived is a mystery.

And until we go back and draft stars we'll remain unattractive and be forced to buy up sh*t broken down players because we're desperate. Elite planning.

I absolutely agree that our drafting and development has been ... underwhelming at best. We never really had the 130-170 gamers who should have been developed during the 08-11 years, maturing as we endured 12-15/16 and be ready to take over when Joey and Roo hung up the boots. We basically had GOPs (as has been pointed out many times), and blokes who were broken-down shells of their best, while some of the players we let go were proving mighty serviceable at other clubs.

I still think Dempster's premature retirement during preseason a couple of years back hurt more than many of our retirements, as did the loss of Koby Stevens, but we had very few eggs, and they were all in one basket.

We've brought in a lot of outside players in the past two seasons - I'd really like to see us draft best available mid this year - we're thin, and have been exposed. Give this group reasonable health, and another pre-season together and I still think we have the basis of a very good team, but I worry a little about the scars this season may be leaving on guys like King, Clark, and Paton.

Koby Steven’s hurt.

he was just the right amount of C-unit that helps a young bunch of choir boys drink alcohol for the first time, try pick up the hottest bird in the club instead of waiting to see which girls would come up to them, before encouraging them to stay out late and rock up to work at dads business hungover with their shirts untucked and hair not combed.

Paton also has abit of the above. Explains why he is more of an Alpha then most of our list. Plus another reason why he is sorely missed.

I'm pretty sure it was you and StCicatriz who had it right about Williams. So many people on here thought he would be the next uncovered mid star, but you both said he won't make it in the midfield full time. They now have a half back line that consists of Saad, Williams, Docherty and Newman, which would be the most expensive in the league by a country mile

It’s grim but with billings it’s pointless letting him walk unless it’s band one, we could get a second for others who just aren’t best 18 with us and nether will be.

We need to take off the rose coloured glasses and work out exactly where our list stands. Imagine getting Riewoldt, montagna and Hayes to run the ruler over it and report to the president. The saints haven’t been honest or consistent with supporters and our inability or lack of stomach to do what’s right has hurt us badly. I truly believe we’re close to the precipice again if we make a mess of this trade period we could be many years away from contending.

This year we need to hit the draft with any high picks and look for bargain upgrades and that’s it, no chasing quick fixes. True mids with all the tools and preferably with at least one with some height early accept nothing else imo.

And Mitch McGovern on a fortune as well. So ****ing stupid it's not funny. They can sack Jenner all they want but he's only working with the shit they heap on his plate. Would have had to stump up big for Marchbank as well. They make me happy just by existing.
