No point even entertaining Bing this year.

It's first time we've had a good pick for 3 years, we need to use it and use it on a mid.

Even if a miracle happened and we ended up with band one for Billings, we should take both to the draft.

Fix the main issues with the list and go after Ben when he's out of contract and hopefully our draft pick won't be near as high as this year's because either.way he'd cost two firsts.

If i had to do a whipping boy top 5 of players who are best 22 ( or debatably best 22 ) So not including Wood, Hunter, McKernan, etc...

Dunstan
Lonie.
Hill
Ross
Long

Maybe Billings sneaks in at 6th.
Good list. I'd probably put Ross higher and Dunstan lower, but they would definetly be the top 5

Allison has put his hand up early in his career to join these ranks soon. And what a year D Mac has had to drop off the list entirely.

Best case is
JB for band 1
Seb for band 3
Dunny for band 4
Lonie for a pick upgrade.

Time to finish the job and get behind Steele. We may as well go all in.
We've got enough to work with now B&B will get most of a season into them and when Pato, Gresh, Jones and Marshall are fit well be a much better unit.

I like the values you’ve given but I wouldn’t want to be moving on both Billings and Ross. Like it or not they are both in our top 10 players and I don’t like our chances of hitting a player as good as Seb in the second round.

I also think many would scoff at us thinking we’d get band 1 for Billings but it would be about all I’d be happy to loose him for.

Being non bias and thinking purely from a list management position the only time I'd go for bing would be when he's a free agent.

There are bugger all options in terms of key defender to bring in unfortunately.

Payne is going nowhere.

McCartin has reportedly re signed with Sydney.

Riccardi would likely see himself as a forward.

Still not sure why we wouldn't have taken Schlensog in the MSD.

He might be a handy inclusion as a DFA at the end of the year.

Averaging almost 18 touches and 8 marks in the WAFL. 199cm tall and still quite raw at the age of 20.

Could be a flop, could be the next Collins, but definitely worth a crack IMO.

Maybe we already have someone lined up? Thinking McAsey.

Just on this headline, is Billings really a whipping boy?
I feel like most saints supporters like him, he’s not a superstar but he’s a bloody good player who occasionally plays a blinder/goes missing.
Seems the whipping part is mainly from the media who constantly compare him to Kelly and Bont.
If you look at the first 20 picks of that draft I’d say he’s probably the 5th best player, hardly a huge mistake taking him number 3.
He isn’t a bad footballer by any means. He is infact pretty good.

but he will ALWAYS be compared to jelly and Bont. That’s always going to be an issue - for fans.

in the AFL landscape they can identify and see talent. It just comes down to his price v compensation for us and Billings desire for a fresh start

Part of me thinks letting him go would be a good move. Then I remember how well letting our other quality players go has gone for us. I really don't think the one extra draft pick we'd get for him will save us. Surely there are other ways we could get back into (at least) the seconbd round of the draft.
We all agree we need a gun mid. There is plenty of them in the top 6/7 in this draft. Secondly Billings will always be a forward who can play midfield. Not the other way around.

hopefully that makes sense.

I'm not against any of those guys going for that value but that's really going to hurt our depth which is already struggling.

You'd hope that the kids we bring in with those picks are ready to go from day one.
Yeah it would leave us a bit thin but if you have an injury year like we've had then you're not gonna make the GF anyway.
May as well pump the games into the future. We've seen this year just how fruitless and wasteful it's been with Smack, Punter, Jake, Chip and Wood. They didn't help us win and they'll be gone in another 3 months, a total waste..

That's all true but I don't look at it as a like for like when drafting. It's just about reshaping the team.
Byrnes < Seb
Snaggs < Billings
Bytel < Dunny
1st pick < Lonie

So Byrnes Less then Seb
Snaggs less than Billings? etc
Or did i spend to much time doing maths?

Warning bells were going off when we walked Steven and Bruce out for SFA. Both trades were completely f’ed & there weren't too many people with me on calling the club out for that.

For too long we have been too focused on being nice, setting up a respectable image etc

Richmond do whatever they want & they win flags.

Much better to ask forgiveness than permission.

Yeah the Cats killed us in that deal!
I can’t believe people still carrying on over what we got for Steven, he was mentally and physically shot and we were just happy to get rid of his money.

As i have said before , if Ben was not Max's brother his name would not even be mentioned on here , this love affair to get him is out of control .

Yeah lol true. However, say it comes out Bing wants to move back to Victoria after he’s done with his fat AFL assisted pay check at Gold Coast, then we would be all over him. Saints fan growing up, parents live in the area, kicking heaps of goals in his third year. We would definitely discuss the idea, and then you throw on top of that he has a twin brother already playing at the saints! It’s romantic, but we just about need some romance in this club to give it some heart these days.

All that being said, it’s up to the club to figure out whether Bing is interested and can wait another year to come. Hit the draft this year, mini rebuild with players and coaches, blood some youth next year and go for Bing when he’s OOC. If we don’t get him, that’s okay, hit the draft again maybe land a big free agent and continue on our merry way. It’s a win win if the club manages get the list both on and off field back for finals. If not then we’ll have plenty to complain about for the next five years.

all i would say is don't start to pre-empt or assume what the cost would be for Bing and when he is contracted too

Everyone is always of the attitude, "we just need the player to want to come".
The latest phase in things seems to be that once a player announces they want to come, that the club they are leaving from names an astronomical price, and its up to the destination club to "get the deal done ". Otherwise they are letting the player down.
Best not to get drawn into those sorts of negotiations, or be prepared let the player down.

If you are negotiating with no options to back out, you are going to get hammered in your negotiation.

Gold Coast would put ridiculous terms on him like Freo did with Hill. They would know we are a soft touch after that negotiation too.

Hill was contracted. Don’t forget we split our 1st & brought in Doug as well. So it was a 1st, 2nd, Blacres & a 4th for Hill & Doug.

Much better than how some like to frame it.

If we wait until the end of next year Bing won’t be contracted.

We’d be crazy to go after him now… load up on mids, get KD & ruck support, get everyone fit & healthy and go bang.

Many scoffed at the thought that Chip would get Melbourne band 1
