So Byrnes Less then Seb
Snaggs less than Billings? etc
Or did i spend to much time doing maths?

Seb Ross is obviously way out in front in terms of output. Byrnes is a promising young developing player who has a handful of games. Seb is a multi B and F winner and senior leader. He's not perfect but he's a solid B plus who has had seasons where he was probably A grade. Byrnes looks like a player but so did hundreds of others in the past decade. Battle was going to be a star a year ago, now people have mentally delisted him.

Again Snags looks good but comparing him to a guy with a heap of experience and who is good but not a star is disrespectful to Billings. It's still about stock piling talent too, if you take away 2 out of your best 22 it stretches the next tier down and loses you depth and less quality pressures the developing players as well.

Hill was contracted. Don’t forget we split our 1st & brought in Doug as well. So it was a 1st, 2nd, Blacres & a 4th for Hill & Doug.

Much better than how some like to frame it.

If we wait until the end of next year Bing won’t be contracted.

We’d be crazy to go after him now… load up on mids, get KD & ruck support, get everyone fit & healthy and go bang.

It's still a stinker. Even a second hurts when you look at Hill's output. The trade for Dougal was a pick swap with GWS that allowed us to get both but the deal for Hill was literally as below.

Blake Acres, Pick 10, Pick 58, and a future second and fourth round pick for Hill and a TRDP.

The pick 58 was on traded but a past 3rd rounder from a previous pick swap that got the Hawks Scrimshaw got us Byrnes. Big Nyuon was the player that was taken with our original pick form Freo.

The picks swaps are now so complex that it's hard to find where half of them came from. We have also given up next years second for Snags so are in deficit again. Fremantle paid pick 24 for Hill coming out of a premiership winning side. That would be about spot on if slightly overs still on his output.

Oh and I think King is contracted too.

If Billings was to go and we got a first round pick as compensation, it could be a good result, but only if our recruiters improved their game.

Today in the Herald-Sun Jon Ralph wrote an article about this and quoted David King extensively.

King hypothesised that if North offered whatever the minimum number is to get a first round pick, the “AFL would work with St Kilda because the club hasn’t won anything in 60 years.”

Then King went on to say though that St Kilda should be careful with such a deal because whoever they drafted with the FA compensation pick would need to be better than Billings, and for a long time.

The article went on to say that it’s likely that St Kilda’s 1st RDP will be pushed back due matched bids for Nick Daicos and Sam Darcy.

What caught my eye was King’s hypothesis that North would offer bare minimum to ensure a 1st RDP as FA compensation and that the AFL would work with St Kilda because of our Premiership drought. That seemed a very interesting thing to suggest.

Am I reading too much into this? Presumably King has good oil on intel at North and might be floating a genuine scenario.

AFL, merged Fitzroy with the Bears and gave them their 8 best players, supported them, and three flags

AFL pumped millions into Sydney, helped them buy players outside of the cap, COLA, Barry Hall striking etc etc. Result two flags

AFL gave millions and 30 10 ten picks to GWS, result grand final appearance

AFL gave millions and paid to keep King and Luckucious with 150k ambassador money outside the cap. Result Fold Coast are still a rabble but they kept two players

AFL paid for Roos to get Melbourne on track. Result favourites to win this year.

Yeah, it is not an unrealistic scenario.

It kind of bugs me the way people carry on about the f/s stuff.

Assume we end up 5th bottom.
We get the 5th pick in the draft but Daicos and Darcy are off the table.
Bid on Darcy pick 1.
We still get the 5th non Darcy-Daicos pick in the draft even if its 6th.

I think King is one of those who doesn't understand how the compensation system works.
Does he really think that Billings should get a contract valued amongst the top 5% of AFL players?

Also , i wish StKilda would be careful with all of their draft picks always.

Not to dump on Jack, because I love to watch him play, but one top 5 in the 2019 B&F, isn’t a high bar to clear.

Tom Lee, and Hickey : Nope
Dunstan :Nope
McCartin, Goddard : Nope
Gresham: Yes
Clark : Not yet
Coffield :Waiting
King : Not yet.
Hill : Nope

We don't have good form with turning our first draft picks into B&F winnders.

We only get screwed over if Collingwood finish below us as they don’t own their pick - GWS do.

so effectively (based-on current ladder position)

Daicos - Pies
Horne - Roos
Hawks pick
Gws pick
Suns pick
Carlton pick
Stkilda pick

Yeah Pies get pick 1 , but they can only get Daicos.
We get the 6th pick excluding Daicos and Darcy.
If someone bids on Daicos, we get the 6th pick excluding Daicos and Darcy.

It would be potentially worse if the Pies had their own pick, it would be possible for them to get 2 picks in front of us.
IE no-one bids on Daicos for 1, 2 or 3, the pies get someone else pick 4, then someone bids on Daicos, so the pies get 2 first round picks.
Worst case scenario.

Trading up for Highmore cancelled the future 2nd out. Garbage picks aside the net cost was pick 10 and the GOAT.
Although we also gave away pick 58, as things transpired we probably wouldn't have used it..

Trading up for Highmore?
Highmore was our third round pick, on of the few that wasn't traded.
Our second ended up with Richmond ( Sampson Ryan ).

Brothers? Really? Well I’ll be. Next thing someone will be saying something really outlandish and suggesting they’re twins or something.

Yes they are twins, though I believe Max is taller.

Ok end of 2nd or there abouts. I'm not quibbling about the minor details sice it seemed we were determined to use very few picks and Tom was probably the guy we wanted..

Yet Steele, Crouch, Higgins & Ryder were our best & most consistent competitors last night.

Maybe the joint needs to be de-St.Kilda-ed first.

Exactly, we are crap at developing our own.. haven’t developed a star player since Jack Steven. So change the coach, change the supporting staff, change the head recruiter; raise the standards in everything on field and the results will come..

Appointing an inexperienced Richo when an experienced Choco was available, then go for a soft touch Ratten when standards are already so low just extended the mistake.. Including Scott Watters, that’s 9 years down the drain.. Please don’t let it go on any longer..

Looks like North are getting confident of landing Kelly.

They are going to have a ripping midfield by adding Kelly and Horne to what they've already got.

Simpkin should still be a gun, LDU, Stephenson was playing well when he went in the mids before injury etc. They are starting to get some real stockpiling going on and learning from Cunners while they are at it. Actually pretty smart to get guns on the cheap trade wise while down the bottom of the ladder and front load them.
